A lot can go wrong in surgery

and unneccesary surgery is a bad idea. I dont think the recovery time is that long, so it makes sense to wait to see if surgery is needed. What doesnt make sense is if their physical therpy is trying to get him on the field before the season ends.

this is an incredibly basic surgery

and what i dont want to see is them forego surgery, him come back next year, and immediately hurt himself and need the surgery anyway.

by mets81 on Aug 28, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

here's the thing...

Beltran, Wright, Santana, Reyes…

it has gotten to the point where it is natural for us metsfans to demand an answer for a lot of things, at least some reconciliation of how the team’s medical straits could be in such a catastrophic way. But not only is our GM probably going to deflect or ignore all calls for an explanation, he is likely incapable of giving us an intelligible answer anyway.

we want to at least draft high and rebuild the supporting part of the team at least, but we don’t want our management to be in charge of the drafting or rebuilding.

we want to look toward the future return of our stars, but not a one of them seems to be guaranteed to come back at their former levels, if at all.

knowing that the current management is likely to remain, and knowing they have no answers, it’s an absurd situation. a situation difficult even for a philosopher king, such as myself, to comprehend, much less a regular schlub sportsfan.

In conclusion, I lobby baseball gods. Give us a sign.

the Cubs might be bigger disasters that we are this season

Think about it: they were the consensus team to beat in the NL this season after being easily the best team in the NL last season, and while they’ve had their fair share of injuries, it’s nothing like the devastation the Mets suffered.

One more reason why I’m happy I’m not a Cubs fan.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

I don't know about that.

The Mets front office shows virtually no ability to analyze players using statistics, but Evans put up some pretty lousy numbers for most of the year. He hasn’t exactly earned a bunch of playing time.

and he’s performed well (esp against LHP) in the minors – so why not bring him up and play him instead of the Sullivans/Reeds/Tatises?

they could’ve played him everyday in the majors and seen what they have. And certainly, now that he IS with the MLB club he should be playing everyday.

Just look at his game logs;http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7595&position=OF

Its just that

1) Evans might be a useful piece, we don’t know and
2) Sullivan and Reed are what they are, which we do know

So Jerry/Omar’s decisions with respect to Evans are extremely frustrating and an indicator of the same organization FAIL that we saw with Omir/Castro and Francoeur/Church.

In the grand scheme of things its not that important, but I think we’re all just a little fed up at how ineptly this franchise is being managed at every level. I know I am.

Bottom line with Evans

He’s one of their better options vs. lefties, especially with no Sheff. Plus they need to see him get some more at bats this year. Moronic that he’s not playing, as I think Cubs are starting two righties the rest of the weekend, so he’s now probably riding pine until next week.

You guys will like this.....

Q. What is an Economic Stimulus payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV
set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending
your stimulus check wisely:

If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China .
If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.
If you purchase a computer, it will go to India .
If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico ,
             Honduras and Guatemala .
If you buy a car, it will go to Japan or Korea.
If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan .
If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to
management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in America by:

1 spending it at yard sales, or
2 going to ball games, or
3 spending it on prostitutes, or
4 beer or
5 tattoos.

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the US .)

Conclusion:

Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day

Stokes' magic ride ends in blaze of glory

He flew too close to the sun on wings made of gold.
Yes, it was a terrible outing, but I will defend him to the death, so consider this:

a) it was his 6th appearance in 8 days, and his 4th in the last 5, and several were more than an inning. Throwing him in games where they are getting killed is dumb.
b) It was clear he had nothing, Jerry could have taken him out after Baker walk
c) He had thrown 2 straight breaking pitches to Soriano, the third one was a terrible call from Santos/dugout, or whoever decided it. Soriano is a mistake hitter.
D) Could have walked Ramirez to pitch to Baker and set up the DP. Bad strategy, Jerry.

All that said, he hadn’t been scored upon since July, so let’s give him some credit.

Who else is there?

Dessens? Feliciano (on pace for 89 games)? Takahasi and Broadway and Dessens are long men at the best. Green sucks. It’s Socks or BB-Rod for 2 innings.
God, before Niese going down, at least Parnell was decent. The rest just suck.

One last thing

Sullivan: 0 for 4. It’s not second guessing when we knew from the beginning that it made zero sense to play him over Evans. Someone said “big deal”, but it’s the little shit like that, dumb shit moves that keep you out of the playoffs in a close year. As someone else said earlier, we know who Sullivan is, he’s had enough major league abs. Evans has not. To deliberately screw over the younger player with promise for a journeyman when you are out of the race is beyond idiotic, it’s irresponsible as an organization.

by David G on Aug 28, 2009 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

I agree 100%

But, I mean if Jerry likes Sullivan, then maybe you don’t play 6-4-3-Tatis, and you put Murphy at third (his natural poistion), and you put Evans at first. I mean if Murph is going to be a DeRosa he has to be able to play third and second, right? What better time for him to learn these positiions.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
