May the force be with us tonight.

I hope I’m wrong but I think we are gonna get spanked.

by fxcarden on Aug 3, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree.

I think Figgy is going to give up some runs. Dan Haren is lights out. I’m interested in seeing how were going to approach things at the plate.

by Abstract NYC on Aug 3, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Jerry's thinking...(for today)

He hinted at leaving Figgy up, and moving Perez to the ’pen to have another lefty.

Me like.

by fxcarden on Aug 3, 2009 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

Perez?

I rather have SOCKS! he’s is a lefty too

by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Goddamit

Figueroa is missing about a foot on every pitch

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

What the hell!

I changed my facebook profile picture on the day we started the 5 game streak.

At the fifth game I started thinking hey this picture and the streak are no coincidence. There is a strange connection to it and I really started believing the streak had to do with my picture. Boy was I wrong.

Listening to Howie Rose

he sounds like the guy from Major Leagues.

Wonder if he’s sick of this and can’t wait for the Islanders season to start.

by Chickendirt on Aug 3, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Me neither

Bailey is growing on me.

All the work he’s done for the organization this summer looks like he’s really bought into this team.

I expect a C coming to him at some point.

Chiming in on an earlier topic

since this game is over: I live in L.A. but grew up in Babylon, L.I. Are we out of the 1st inning yet?

by David G on Aug 3, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

Nope

Almost through the order once

by TheBigStapler on Aug 3, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Gil Meche

woulda been nice with Mark Teahen

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

Stop listening to Matt Cerrone

Mark Teahen is an okay player. That’s it. He’s projected to finish the season with a .342 wOBA. For a first baseman, that is NOT good. He also plays third, but is blocked in NY.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

listen to Matt Cerrone?

your talking to the guy who made the Matt Cerrone is annoying blog….. Gil Meche and Mark Teahen could be helping this club right now……. Teahen is CHEAP and he’s usually healthy.

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Murphy and Evans are cheap, too.

Why would you trade them away for Teahen?

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Teahen isn't a 1B by default. He can play multiple positions much like a Mark Derosa.

You give up a evans or a murphy with Gil Meche as a combo with Teahen……

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Gil Meche

has a 4.19 FIP this year and is hurt.

And Teahen doesn’t play any of the positions all that well.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

huh?

Evans and Murphy can each play multiple positions, too.

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

not good.....

if you think Murphy is good anywhere else than 1B than you are delusional. He hasn’t shown me anything this year besides a once in a lifetime ball off the bag defensive play…. I like Evans but does Met management?

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

if Murph hasn’t shown you anything, what has Teahen done for you? Murphy has made some bonehead errors, but he DOES have good range at first and in left. It’s hard to teach range… but you can learn to not make errors with more time at a position. The Mets didn’t even give Murph more than 30 games in left this season.

Teahen on the other hand has below average range at more than one position.

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

wait a minute....

I don’t want to interrupt your argument but Murphy had horrible range in LF, and most balls he got to were turned into an adventure because of his lack of range. Add to that the fact that he didn’t know which base to throw to, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I’ll give you that he is decent at first, but don’t say that he was even close to being adequate in the OF. You say “they only gave him 30 games” like it’s a bad thing. From a public relations point of view, this team had no business experimenting at any position. Not after two collapses, and with a huge payroll. They were expected to put an adequate team on the field. Not some kid that was unproven.

by fxcarden on Aug 3, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

what is all this Teahen has horrible range/ below average defense??

HELLO!!! Looks who has been on the field this year buddy. Below Avg. defense/ not hitting for any kind of balance (Murphy, cough, cough).

I know he’s young but that’s no excuse in baseball…you play for a product and well Daniel Murphy hasn’t helped this team win much at all.

Teahen is hitting around .290 and he has just as many HR as any other Met this year (nine). He can steal a base if he wants too with decent speed. I think his OBP is around .350 which is better than I can say for most Mets.

His defensive WARP has never been in the negative so I’ll take that. He plays mostly 3B but can play LF and RF (SURPRISE!! we need that) as well as 2B and 1B. He is a gamer…he’s not a superstar but he is however a better option for the future than any of the following: Murphy, Sheffield, Sullivan, Tatis, Pagan, Cora, etc.

He’s extremely affordable too.

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He's just not a very good player.

He’s a 28 year old, ~2 WAR player with no upside and no position to play for the Mets.

Just because he’s better than the other players on the Mets doesn’t make him a good option.

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

right

And, where would Teahen play?

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the point.

“Since he can play more than one position, he must be super valuable, rite??”

Wrong…

ain't had enough...

by BlackOps on Aug 3, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

why is he not valuable, because some spreadsheet says so ?.

come on man, look at the team we have now.

Nobody said he is the answer. But he is an improvement over current, and could be a useful piece.

by fxcarden on Aug 3, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

when you have a team with injuries at close to almost every position

it’s not too bad an idea to have versatile players that are WILLING and able to play multiple positions. He won’t block anybody and he’s a ML starting caliber player.

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, he seems to be Cerrone's favorite guy

Meche is not cheap and I’m pretty sure he’s hurt as well

And who cares about Teahen. He’s not good defensively and he’s not all that good of a hitter. Let’s just add him to our list of guys who play 1B and 3B but aren’t very good.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Meche isn't cheap

But he sure as hell is a better option than: Maine, Perez, Redding, Figgy, *insert Met pitcher not named Johan Santana. maybe KC would go for a Murphy, Kunz, Ruben Tejeda type player deal. We take on Meche remaining salary.

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh???

why would we include murph who is nearly the equivalent of teahen in a few years kunz who may be a decent pen arm and a very good young SS with great range and plate discipline then PAY for gil meche’s 4.19 FIP? thats crazy

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Aug 3, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Kunz will never be a decent pen arm in the majors. Tejeda, from what I understand isn’t ever going to be a great hitter. If Jose isn’t playing SS in the future for the Mets I bet Wilmer Flores is. Tejeda is expendable and Royals really have no SS depth in their whole organization. This would be attractive. What’s wrong with Meche? He is a whole lot better than any of our options in our organization. We overrate everything as Mets fans, Im sorry.

Maybe trade John Maine for one of the three i said…it’s just to see if anyone liked the idea.

I know I’d much rather have Meche and Teahen than three of: Murphy, Kunz, Tejeda, or Maine.

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

that was a double anyway you look at it

by RIPShea on Aug 3, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm a Mark Reynolds fan

who cares about the Ks, this guy has crazy power and is basically succeeding at what he’s trying to do, crush the ball in a hellacious fashion. He’s on my fantasy team, can play 1st or 3rd, really like the stolen bases, too.

BUNTING 3 runs down in the 1st?

Jerry’s buntmania has reached new levels of absurdity. Seriously, that should be a firing offense, at this point.

by RetireNumber17 on Aug 3, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

That's where Jerry says

it’s castillo “doing it on his own.” But you know what? He should have a “don’t bunt” sign so Castillo can’t pull that shit.

by David G on Aug 3, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be nice

if they had any lefthanded power threat vs. righties like this. No offense to Murph, but they’ve had 1 lefty homer in the last week or two or three I think.

by David G on Aug 3, 2009 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

I still like Murphy

He’s grown on me over the course of the season (I know I can get medical treatment for that).

I think he can be developed into something good.

Oh god

Sheff has no arm either

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

Jerry presser tonight after the game...

Burkhardt: Jerry, what do you think happened to Figgy that he gave up all those runs.

Jerry: Well, I thought I sensed some anxiety on his part, and I think he would have been succesful if he didn’t throw so many meatballs………ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

why is tim redding still in the game

by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess Reynolds enjoys Citi Field

and we can all expect some fun innings from Redding tonight. We may lose by 14 tonight.

by David G on Aug 3, 2009 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

I tell you guys no lie...

I wanted the Mets to sign Jon Garland and Derek Lowe before the season started. It’s so funny how everyone is now hoping on the Garland bandwagon now. : /

by Abstract NYC on Aug 3, 2009 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

What are you talking about?

Jon Garland sucks. He has a 4.62 FIP.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

He really show how much he sucks

Yesterday.I would rather have Wolf and Garland on my Team than Ollie and Livan

by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too

But what if we just avoided all of them instead?

Wow, Garland overmatched a pathetic lineup and got lucky. He is not good.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 3, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I was hoping for Wolf

He’s cheap and about the same as Lowe in my estimation

by Chickendirt on Aug 3, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

I like Figgy

I just think that he’s a AAA pitcher. I wanted to see him succeed here. They just crush his stuff. His MLB equivalent of his AAA performance of this year would be pretty decent. His actual MLB performance – pretty far from decent.

by TMS on Aug 3, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah he's the kind of guy

That pitches well in AAA but when he gets called up to the Majors he sucks

AA got Nelson Figueroa in there...

Happy now? Your Cy Young candidate did a lousy job and ruined the price of tickets for all those involved.

"off with his head!"

Okay, too much, but why hasn’t a met crowd done that yet?

by David G on Aug 3, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you give Figgy another chance?

Do you think maybe he was nervous, overthrowing like Ronny suggested, trying to hard to make good on his chance or do you say that he’s just not good enough to get major leaguers out?

by TMS on Aug 3, 2009 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

i give him a second chance

cause its not like our record matters much anymore… worst case scenario we lose and get a better draft pick, best case, he finds his stride and we have a decent pitcher.

I'd actually be fine with Murphy at 1B.

I think it’s a waste of money to give a giant contract to a deep no-skill position like 1B.

I’d rather they spend on the skill positions and pitching. Any slob can play 1B and hit 20 HR.

I am OK with Murph at 1B next year. Spend money on pitching.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
