I disagree.
I think Figgy is going to give up some runs. Dan Haren is lights out. I’m interested in seeing how were going to approach things at the plate.
Swing at the 1st pitch
and beat it into the ground

This is speculative on my part
But Francoeur could conceivably have success tonight. His toughest opponents are probably the nibblers. I believe Haren is a guy who throws in the strike zone a lot rather than around it. Wishful thinking?

I like Jerry's thinking...(for today)
He hinted at leaving Figgy up, and moving Perez to the ’pen to have another lefty.
Me like.
Perez?
I rather have SOCKS! he’s is a lefty too

Yay!!!
Another night where we all engage in self torture!!!
I'm in Boston
Originally from Port jefferson Long Island.
I hope they blow each other up
I can’t stand either of them.
Red Sox fans are just as annoying as Yankees fans
Most Boston fans are.
Totally obnoxious. Never just happy enough that they won.
Always have to rub it in.
Well that sucks
Figgy is making me look bad.
This is a preview
Of the home run derby that will

Goddamit
Figueroa is missing about a foot on every pitch
What the hell!
I changed my facebook profile picture on the day we started the 5 game streak.
At the fifth game I started thinking hey this picture and the streak are no coincidence. There is a strange connection to it and I really started believing the streak had to do with my picture. Boy was I wrong.
Listening to Howie Rose
he sounds like the guy from Major Leagues.
Wonder if he’s sick of this and can’t wait for the Islanders season to start.
Me neither
Bailey is growing on me.
All the work he’s done for the organization this summer looks like he’s really bought into this team.
I expect a C coming to him at some point.
Chiming in on an earlier topic
since this game is over: I live in L.A. but grew up in Babylon, L.I. Are we out of the 1st inning yet?
Stop listening to Matt Cerrone
Mark Teahen is an okay player. That’s it. He’s projected to finish the season with a .342 wOBA. For a first baseman, that is NOT good. He also plays third, but is blocked in NY.
listen to Matt Cerrone?
your talking to the guy who made the Matt Cerrone is annoying blog….. Gil Meche and Mark Teahen could be helping this club right now……. Teahen is CHEAP and he’s usually healthy.
Teahen isn't a 1B by default. He can play multiple positions much like a Mark Derosa.
You give up a evans or a murphy with Gil Meche as a combo with Teahen……
Gil Meche
has a 4.19 FIP this year and is hurt.
And Teahen doesn’t play any of the positions all that well.
not good.....
if you think Murphy is good anywhere else than 1B than you are delusional. He hasn’t shown me anything this year besides a once in a lifetime ball off the bag defensive play…. I like Evans but does Met management?
hmm
if Murph hasn’t shown you anything, what has Teahen done for you? Murphy has made some bonehead errors, but he DOES have good range at first and in left. It’s hard to teach range… but you can learn to not make errors with more time at a position. The Mets didn’t even give Murph more than 30 games in left this season.
Teahen on the other hand has below average range at more than one position.
ain't had enough...
wait a minute....
I don’t want to interrupt your argument but Murphy had horrible range in LF, and most balls he got to were turned into an adventure because of his lack of range. Add to that the fact that he didn’t know which base to throw to, and you have a recipe for disaster.
I’ll give you that he is decent at first, but don’t say that he was even close to being adequate in the OF. You say “they only gave him 30 games” like it’s a bad thing. From a public relations point of view, this team had no business experimenting at any position. Not after two collapses, and with a huge payroll. They were expected to put an adequate team on the field. Not some kid that was unproven.
what is all this Teahen has horrible range/ below average defense??
HELLO!!! Looks who has been on the field this year buddy. Below Avg. defense/ not hitting for any kind of balance (Murphy, cough, cough).
I know he’s young but that’s no excuse in baseball…you play for a product and well Daniel Murphy hasn’t helped this team win much at all.
Teahen is hitting around .290 and he has just as many HR as any other Met this year (nine). He can steal a base if he wants too with decent speed. I think his OBP is around .350 which is better than I can say for most Mets.
His defensive WARP has never been in the negative so I’ll take that. He plays mostly 3B but can play LF and RF (SURPRISE!! we need that) as well as 2B and 1B. He is a gamer…he’s not a superstar but he is however a better option for the future than any of the following: Murphy, Sheffield, Sullivan, Tatis, Pagan, Cora, etc.
He’s extremely affordable too.
He's just not a very good player.
He’s a 28 year old, ~2 WAR player with no upside and no position to play for the Mets.
Just because he’s better than the other players on the Mets doesn’t make him a good option.
ain't had enough...
That's the point.
“Since he can play more than one position, he must be super valuable, rite??”
Wrong…
ain't had enough...
why is he not valuable, because some spreadsheet says so ?.
come on man, look at the team we have now.
Nobody said he is the answer. But he is an improvement over current, and could be a useful piece.
when you have a team with injuries at close to almost every position
it’s not too bad an idea to have versatile players that are WILLING and able to play multiple positions. He won’t block anybody and he’s a ML starting caliber player.
Well, he seems to be Cerrone's favorite guy
Meche is not cheap and I’m pretty sure he’s hurt as well
And who cares about Teahen. He’s not good defensively and he’s not all that good of a hitter. Let’s just add him to our list of guys who play 1B and 3B but aren’t very good.
Meche isn't cheap
But he sure as hell is a better option than: Maine, Perez, Redding, Figgy, *insert Met pitcher not named Johan Santana. maybe KC would go for a Murphy, Kunz, Ruben Tejeda type player deal. We take on Meche remaining salary.
Huh???
why would we include murph who is nearly the equivalent of teahen in a few years kunz who may be a decent pen arm and a very good young SS with great range and plate discipline then PAY for gil meche’s 4.19 FIP? thats crazy
by MetsKnicksRutgers on Aug 3, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Kunz will never be a decent pen arm in the majors. Tejeda, from what I understand isn’t ever going to be a great hitter. If Jose isn’t playing SS in the future for the Mets I bet Wilmer Flores is. Tejeda is expendable and Royals really have no SS depth in their whole organization. This would be attractive. What’s wrong with Meche? He is a whole lot better than any of our options in our organization. We overrate everything as Mets fans, Im sorry.
Maybe trade John Maine for one of the three i said…it’s just to see if anyone liked the idea.
I know I’d much rather have Meche and Teahen than three of: Murphy, Kunz, Tejeda, or Maine.
I picked a good night to drink
Too bad I don’t have any Hot Dogs.
Unfortunaly they don’t sell Sabrettes up here.
I'm a Mark Reynolds fan
who cares about the Ks, this guy has crazy power and is basically succeeding at what he’s trying to do, crush the ball in a hellacious fashion. He’s on my fantasy team, can play 1st or 3rd, really like the stolen bases, too.
Pagan is p.o.'d about that double switch I bet
Jerry gave him some gangsta motivation and it’s paying off already. Brilliant move, Jerry, ha-ha
Do the DFA papers on Figgy get faxed or emailed?
and do they have to wait until the game ends?
no he's crashing and burning
they’ll extend his contract

WTF is Castillo doing?
He bunted ball 4. We’re down 3 freakin’ runs!
Am I the only one that gets angry at Omar every time I see Sheff in the line up?
I’m still POed at the trade deadline and his inaction.
If had no shot to buy that should have moved him to sell.
BUNTING 3 runs down in the 1st?
Jerry’s buntmania has reached new levels of absurdity. Seriously, that should be a firing offense, at this point.
That's where Jerry says
it’s castillo “doing it on his own.” But you know what? He should have a “don’t bunt” sign so Castillo can’t pull that shit.
I was a huge Jerry supporter coming into this season.
He lost me…. Good guy, but questionable manager.
It would be nice
if they had any lefthanded power threat vs. righties like this. No offense to Murph, but they’ve had 1 lefty homer in the last week or two or three I think.
I still like Murphy
He’s grown on me over the course of the season (I know I can get medical treatment for that).
I think he can be developed into something good.
Jerry presser tonight after the game...
Burkhardt: Jerry, what do you think happened to Figgy that he gave up all those runs.
Jerry: Well, I thought I sensed some anxiety on his part, and I think he would have been succesful if he didn’t throw so many meatballs………ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Poor Nelson
He hasn’t looked great, but that BABIP and HR/FB is not fair.
Another great Omar off season

“Quite frankly Figgy has had less than nothing last night”
Nice quotables
Poor Figgy
He’s not reppin the Boston-area liberal arts schools all to well
Which reminds me
why is tim redding still in the game
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess Reynolds enjoys Citi Field
and we can all expect some fun innings from Redding tonight. We may lose by 14 tonight.
I tell you guys no lie...
I wanted the Mets to sign Jon Garland and Derek Lowe before the season started. It’s so funny how everyone is now hoping on the Garland bandwagon now. : /
well.......I argued on Metsblog for Garland, and I did a fanpost here, and everyone thought I was nuts.
Well they should have listened to you...
You were absolutely right. The guy was a huge factor for the White Sox winning that World Series.
What are you talking about?
Jon Garland sucks. He has a 4.62 FIP.
He really show how much he sucks
Yesterday.I would rather have Wolf and Garland on my Team than Ollie and Livan
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Me too
But what if we just avoided all of them instead?
Wow, Garland overmatched a pathetic lineup and got lucky. He is not good.
Wolf was the better option over Garland
and Ollie for that matter.
Booing Figueroa?
Give me a goddam break. Like this team has given anyone anything.
im going to pretend they're booing Omar
the classy move
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 3, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
This is like a Glavine start
I’d boo the crap out of him
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions
so it's a 4-4 homestand
After a 3-0 start. That’s such progress!! 5-game streak was just random chance/mirage/rockies suck on road.
Maybe figgy purposely sucked
Because he secretly hates the way he’s been treated? Conspiracy theory.
I shit it off
had to.
Couldn’t take much more of that.
I like Figgy
I just think that he’s a AAA pitcher. I wanted to see him succeed here. They just crush his stuff. His MLB equivalent of his AAA performance of this year would be pretty decent. His actual MLB performance – pretty far from decent.
Yeah he's the kind of guy
That pitches well in AAA but when he gets called up to the Majors he sucks
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 3, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
AA got Nelson Figueroa in there...
Happy now? Your Cy Young candidate did a lousy job and ruined the price of tickets for all those involved.
You may have Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels, and Lidge...but, WE have Fernando Tatis, baby. Two grand slames in one inning. Hello??
Figueroa got quite unlucky and it is a sample size of 1 2/3 innings
Oh, and Tim Redding is just the man.
Boo Omar
They should boo Omar, this guy needs to be FIRED!!!
But it should happen - right Keith and Ron ?
apologies to those not watching on SNY.
A "fire omar" chant
If you are at the game and that breaks out, do you join in or not?
"off with his head!"
Okay, too much, but why hasn’t a met crowd done that yet?
Ok lineup, just swing at the 1st pitch you see for a groundout
Make this game last less than 2 hours
Do you give Figgy another chance?
Do you think maybe he was nervous, overthrowing like Ronny suggested, trying to hard to make good on his chance or do you say that he’s just not good enough to get major leaguers out?
i give him a second chance
cause its not like our record matters much anymore… worst case scenario we lose and get a better draft pick, best case, he finds his stride and we have a decent pitcher.

This team is too bad for Jerry’s incompetence to matter, but he needs to be gone after the season.

nobody expected this

I'd actually be fine with Murphy at 1B.
I think it’s a waste of money to give a giant contract to a deep no-skill position like 1B.
I’d rather they spend on the skill positions and pitching. Any slob can play 1B and hit 20 HR.

If your life is in danger,
you can get the mob to leave you alone by bitching about Francoeur.
One pitch!

Seems like when one of our guys gets a HR
Everyone else just goes down and has shitty ABs.
i would've enjoyed victory

Maybe the Santos prediction from earlier comes true?
Although we really can’t afford an xtra inning game tonight.
There is no denying it
I do not like Daniel Murphy. He is over-matched. Who cares if he means business. The economy sucks right now
no, no
it’s a nine inning game.

How can you give up with Short Swingz due up?
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
Will the Mets ever shave again?
If it takes us until 2012 to get back to .500, what happens to the Met players? ZZ Top? Hasidim?

Woo
nice pitch, random white guy.
Who is this pitcher?

Did the sun come up this morning?
You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.
Yeah
You know what’s funny, is I’m surprised that opposing pitchers seem to always throw strikes to him. It’s not like I’ve seen him swing at a lot of balls. It seems like they immediately bust him in the strike zone, which makes absolutely no sense to me.
I like when he actually takes the first pitch

11 pitches, 10 strikes

this may be neither the time nor place
my review of “Watchmen”:
long movie
stuck pretty close to each frame of comic
too strangely violent
could have been good, which puts it up there on superhero movies
no one’s boobies were big enough
didn’t need the blue man group guys junk in my face all night
you’re welcome!

I didn't hate the movie
but I didn’t particularly like it, either. The fight scenes were ridiculous with all the slo-mo/speed-up nonsense.
I did enjoy the boobies, though, even if they weren’t big enough for your liking.

the fight scenes
before she fell asleep, my wife asked me why they all fought like super powered martial artists if some of them were just putting on costumes. Ashamed, I had no good answer.

Yeah that was part of the ridiculousness for me
the books were about normal people getting dressed up, not people who could chop your arm in half. I guess you gotta dress up a movie but, bleh.

A Met game...
is like having blue man group’s junk in your face for 3 hours.
I'm sick of comic book movies
The only thing I’m really lookin forward to is Howard Sinn’s"The people speak" airing in the History Channel.
This years summer movies are all lame.
Howard Sinn?
Is that Howard Zinn’s porno name?
Not nit-picking, I just didn’t want to let the bad joke pass.

I’m excited for it though.
I love his books.
Hadn't heard of it
but sounds like something I’d check out. I also like his writing.

It's supposed to air sometimein the fall
Origninall it was supposed to be People’s History of the Unsited States.
Matt Damon is producing it.
Well

Well that's disappointing
You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.
i wonder if this is Sport's Illustrated 's
most devastating jinx yet?
I mean not only are they out of contention, but they lost (maybe for a long time) 2 of their big time stars, and about 50 other huge injuries.
If the team plane went down, it could be worse.

I agree
Although with Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana this team should see a WS at some point.
I seriously doubt that.
The Wilpons have shown that they don’t give a shit about this franchise. They poured a bucket of cash at Omar’s feet, they are going to stick with him no matter what.
Omar is done
The Wilpon’s don’t like bad PR.
Omar will cry injuries.
It’s the perfect excuse for this year.
Didn't jeff tell newsday
that Omar is “this close to being out of baseball”

Right, but,
if that wasn’t the perfect time to fire him, I doubt the will can him in the off-season.
Lets see the spin in the post game
Jerry: I thought Figgy was making some great pitches, but they were just hitting them.
i was hoping for a "Omiracle"

Can they please just end this season?
I think I’d prefer they just lose 10 in a row now, so we end the farce that this team could somehow compete for a playoff spot.
Figgy's game score was 10

so was figgy unbeliveably shitty?
you know if it was redding or Livan who pitched this he would not be DFA’ed, but Figgy will.
