Possible GM Candidate?

Does he actually evaluate players or does his gut do his thinking?

by aparkermarshall on Aug 4, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

His comments on Steven Matz:

“What he has is a solid three-pitch mix,” said Rudy Terrasas, the Mets’ director of amateur scouting. “He’s a fastball-curveball-change guy. He’s got a clean delivery, good arm action.”

“He was the best player available when we made that selection,” Terrasas said. “And again, like I said yesterday, we were very excited and pleased that we were able to get someone in our backyard.”

“All the ingredients are there,” Terrasas said. “But like any young high school pitcher he’s just going to need some time to develop.”

Too far away in the corporate ladder to be a GM, but he plays the draft picks.

Age would explain the decline in velocity

but him catching too much of the plate, is, I think, injury related, specifically his fingers, and to a lesser extent his knee.

there’s no reason that a guy with pretty good control like Johan would catch so much of the plate on 0-2, 1-2 counts.

he also needs another pitch, and not that slurve he throws to lefties. I don’t get why he hasn’t developed a cutter yet, as it would keep right handed hittters honest, and force them to guess at another pitch, instead of simple fastball/change.

Green by far

When Perez screws up we usually have time to work around it. Redding pitched better than I have seen him all year yesterday, and Parnell has been close to average with some flashes of greatness

Well fellas......

zthis is definitely the last nail in the coffin…..

I was at the game, and left just as Pujols hit the homer into the apple. By the time I left the parking lot, K-Rod was busy blowing the save. By the time I got to the GW bridge, we were going to extra innings. By the time I got home, Murphy had struck out on 3 pitches. I pulled into my driveway as Stokes was replaced by Feliciano (who almost never pitches) after just one batter. Feliciano must have been rusty since he almost never pitches, and Jerry decide to bring his biggest pile of shit pitcher with the bases loaded. I saw the HBP as I turned on the computer, and I heard the homer from the next room.

All in all, a pretty eventful evening. Now, this is what I have to say….

Omar is gone.
Murphy basically sucks. I know he tries hard, but he doesn’t have “it”.
David Wright is the biggest wimp in the sorry history of this team.
Berroa…..no comment. He’s just a throwaway.
Green is garbage
Feliciano should ask for a trade.
Santana deserves better, and should also ask for a trade. If I am him….screw this team. At least the Twins made it to the postseason and were competitive.

I am so pissed at this entire organization, it isn’t even funny.

Davd Wright went 4/5 in terms of getting on base

He’s playing his ass off. What are you talking about?

The fact is when you are giving ABs to Francoeur, Santos, Berroa, Cora, Reed, Tatis, Sullivan, etc. you just arent going to win many games.

But you are totally right, this was unabashedly terrible. And tomorrow we will find out that Santana has been pitching through injury and has to go on the Dl.

they should shut him down. Also shut down all the other injured people except for Wagner since hes almost back.

WOuld be the intelligent thing to do

So we will do the exact opposite. I’ll even posit that the Mets (read: management) have known for awhile and made him keep pitching because otherwise they can’t pretend any more that this season isn’t done

Leave 2009 to the Berroas, Greens, and Coas (ok, now I want the 1st overall pick. I know it’s hard, but we can try it)

I remember Matt Stairs when he was with the New Britain Red Sox

That was the same year that the Albany-Colonie Yankees had that exciting young third baseman. I wonder what ever happened to him.

The butcher and the baker and the people on the street, where did they go? To meet the Mets!

by Rod Gaspar Fan Club on Aug 4, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Albany-Colonie

That’s a mouthful. I love how they couldn’t be “Albany”, no, instead “Colonie” needed to get a shout out.

I’m surprised they didn’t go with the Albany-Colonie-Watervliet-Capital District Yankees.

by Mex_17 on Aug 4, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

More piss and vinegar.

Santos is a flash in the pan at best. He also basically sucks. He can’t catch a throw from the outfield to save his life.

I know everyone here prizes the prospects we supposedly have….here’s a radical idea…

1) trade all the stupid prospects, and get some players in here that will make a difference

or

2) go “all youth”, and trade your valuable pieces for other team’s top prospects like Tampa did, and rebuild.

by fxcarden on Aug 4, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

i'd rather see all youth

we dont have enough chips to trade for a team thatll go all the way.

Murphy is just not that good

You can’t sugarcoat his performance. It would be ok for a middle infielder or a catcher but for a 1st baseman or corner outfield its atrocious. I don’t know if Murphy is part of the answer for the future but I doubt it. He’s not THAT young. He’s 24. Look at Santos minor league #s. He’s 28 yrs old and wasn’t even good in the minors.

Next year

Looking to next year, the lineup should be pretty good. Pickup an OFer (Bay maybe) and I guess we’ll need a 1st baseman and a catcher ….. Geez as I start to right this I doubt the premise. I was gonna say the lineup looks good but the starting pitching is suspect but now I’m not so sure the lineup will be that good either. Sighh……

so many holes and god knows how everyone comes back

maine is not looking good, and reyes with constant setbacks is an issue. If beltran needs microfracture and doesnt get it until the offseason then he’s gonna miss half of next year

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 4, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe not

If the surgery goes well and he doesn’t rush he could be back in April. You can come back from microfracture in as little as 6 months I believe

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 4, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

he could be anywhere from Stoudamare to Allan Houston. Reyes will be fine if the organization stops pushing him to come back for the rest of the season. Its like Beltran saying that he want s to come back even if he’s only 85% and in constant pain and wearing a knee brace.

On that note, the first move this off season should be to fire the medical staff

my strategy is to eat a lot of bacon

So I can never truly determine if it was the bacon or the mets that ruined my health. That way nobody is to blame, and I can go on enjoying two of my favorite things no matter how bad they are for me.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
