can you photoshop an "IPOR" tie on that fella?

"If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it on the scoreboard?"

by hotspur on Aug 6, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

This is just another example of Omar's

inability to think outside the bun. Let Roberto Hernandez walk in 05 reaquire him in 06, let Marlon Anderson walk reaquire him, Tatis/Easley/Valentine/Perez/Sosa/Mota had bounce back years resign them ignoring regression or underlying numbers (though some moves are more defendable than others,) former Expos come aboard. Omar is a scout but if personal decisions come down to players he has seen, the player pool is severly limited. With that said, this move isn’t a big deal but still a little more of that creativity that he claims to love would be nice.

by Sokojoe on Aug 6, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

The only exception was Bert. I thought he played admirably in his separate tenures with the Mets, even in ’06. So yeah, there are some exceptions. Other than that, Omar has no ability to look at players outside of his preferences.

Well...

Any playing time he takes away from the immortal Angel Berroa is a win. Greg Veloz isn’t worth the paper he’s printed on as a prospect, so yeah.

I don't think so

No high socks, no beard, weird afro thing, non-white. But he is a light hitting middle infielder, so possibly. I’ll go check grission-reference.com and get back to you.

there needs to be a stat

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"

by firejerrynow on Aug 6, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

if Eckstein is the prototype then everyone else will be negative.

But there could be counting stats as well like Fist Pumps, Mound Charges, Umpire arguments, Opposing team arguments, Same team arguments, Same team exhortations, atta boys, diving catches, dirty uniforms, etc.

Negative stats would be Cadillacing, failing to run out grounders and pop ups, talking in third person, calling out teammates (unless media thinks it’s warranted and shows leadership then it’s a positive stat), etc.

by blains2000 on Aug 6, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Positive stats would be

Advancing runners to 3rd on groundouts, foul balls, sunflower seeds chewed, and pine tar on helmet.

Negatives would be home runs that clear the wall by more than 4 feet, using batting gloves, and shaving.

by Steeeve on Aug 6, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if we're going to do a stat called WBG (Wins Because of Grission), Biological adjustments are necessary

White is an automatic +10 in RBG (Runs Because of Grission); Everything else is neutral
Every inch below 6 feet tall is +3 RBG, above is -3
Is fat Grissiony? I’ll get back to this later

Career Achievements are also needed:
A World Series Ring is +50 RBG over their career. (That’s 10 WBG for Eckstein since he has two)
Gold Glove is +7.5 RBG
All Star game is +7.5 RBG (AS MVP is +4 RBG in addition)
MVP is +12 RBG

Over course there are other things that are very important that happen on a per game basis such as just barely getting the throw from shortstop to first base (.5 RBG) and also a jump throw from short (.5 RBG). There are others that we’ll have to quantify later.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

stuff that don't show up in the boxscore

Fist bumps, Mound chats, getting in people’s face, bunting on your own, getting caught stealing

by firejerrynow on Aug 6, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

All very gritty

But you have to remember, fist bumps good, Nick Swisher’s celebrations good, but Jose Reyes’ elbow bump celebrations are very bad, they show absolutely no grission at all.

Don't forget about dirt on the uniform.

Great, I'm thrilled

Finally we have the elder version of Argenis Reyes back.

If we’re going out to get these crappy prospects, can we at least get someone with a little power? Like a 2006 Russell Branyan? I was hoping Wily Mo Pena would get a call up for the entertainment value of his home runs, but they released him a while ago. Who cares if he’s a dud in the field and strikes out every other AB, give us something fun to watch!

Wow

If only we could do the same with Castro, Church, Kazmire, an so on.
I could make a freaking all-star team out of the talent the Mets have traded away!

by samdaman on Aug 6, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

It was either this or claiming Chris Woodward (DFA'd by Seattle on Tuesday)

Everything that annoys me about this move:

1. Omar makes this move after the horse is well out of the barn. Where was this in May when Ramon Martinez was starting at SS or at the All-Star break when Angel Berroa was brought in?

2. It doesn’t mark the end of Angel Berroa. He’s allowed to stay as long as he wants, despite being terrible at everything and old.

3. Why trade for a player outside of your system when you have Mark Kiger playing in AA? He’s a good on-base dude drafted by the A’s in the Moneyball draft and by most accounts a good defender at 2B/3B and adequate at SS.

by All Shook Down on Aug 6, 2009 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

Didn't we acquire Wilson Valdez in May?

Wasn’t this the reason we traded for him in the first place? He’s probably about the same as Hernandez and Reyes, and definitely better than Berroa. The fact that he’s in AAA with Argenis while Berroa is defrauding the Wilpons out of a paycheck does not reflect well on Omar.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 6, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

What does reflect well on Omar though?

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 6, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree.

I’d rather have Valdez up than either A. Reyes or Berroa. Kiger intrigues me because he brings defense AND OBP. He’s a lot better bet to hold up on a ML bench if he can indeed play a good 2B/3B/SS at the ML level.

by All Shook Down on Aug 6, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's a better idea

How about we kill all of those players and just leave 2B and SS unoccupied? That would seem to be the least detrimental to the team.

by Steeeve on Aug 6, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I jumped the gun about Berroa

They haven’t had to make a roster move to clear room for Hernandez yet, but crap, it better be Berroa.

by All Shook Down on Aug 7, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I demand Oil Spill

Neither can hit and he plays better defense and has more versitility. I thought I was done with .179 hitting Anderson Hernandez.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
