Here's a thought
Cut Lance Broadway. Wait for a team to sign him. Trade Castillo for him, eating 70% all of Castillo’s contract. Sign O-Dawg for 5 years, $55 million. BOOM
by James Kannengieser on Sep 10, 2009 3:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
then we can sign bengie
for 3 years 24 million
by firejerrymanuel on Sep 10, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that would be all well and good
except…
orlando hudson is phenomenally overrated.
i mean, i hate castillo as much as anybody, and hudson is an upgrade in vacuum.
but hudson’s defense is by all measures awful. and he’s old and injury prone. signing him to a multi-year deal is essentially repeating the mistake of castillo.
by firejerrymanuel on Sep 10, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hudson's defense is...
-3 runs according to UZR
and
+3 runs according to plus/minus
so by all measures not awful

ehhhhhhhhhhh
in the bottom half in baseball in UZR. especially factoring in range.
last year he was a -7.6.
near the bottom in RZR at .796. last year dead last at .784.
he’s probably not good at defense and he’s getting older

better than Castillo defensively

that's not much of an accomplishment
so we eat a ton of castillo’s salary: 8-10 million?
then we pay hudson 6 million a year? 8 million? 10 million?
for how much more production?

I don't think many disagree with you
about eating Castillo’s salary and signing Hudson. Your assessment that Hudson’s defense is “by all measures awful” seems a bit harsh.
by James Kannengieser on Sep 10, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'll rephrase it as
“by many measures poor”

So two years ago vs. this year and a rest of a career of data?
I’m not saying he’s great, but he’s certainly average.

he's been bad this year
and was even worse last year.
second basemen age poorly.
his defense probably stinks.

UZR is a bitch in small samples
Even the last 2 years of data aren’t very conclusive. The Fans still think he is one of the best in the game also:

To be fair
I think Cubs fans might be punishing him for his .210 wOBA this year (not that he doesn’t deserve it).

I agree with Big Baby about everything but the defense
Kensai from Memories of Kevin Malone assesses his defense as poor going to one side, but great going to another. I don’t remember which was which and I don’t feel like looking it up.
O-Dawg’s stock is up and I’d be willing to bet a hefty sum that he signs a contract worth significantly more than Castillo’s at the same age Luis’ was when he signed in 2007. Obviously, no two players are exactly alike, but it’s worth pointing out that Hudson’s health history is as checkered as Castillo’s. Even if Hudson stays healthy and approximates 2009 in 2010 and 11, he’ll be a 2.5-3 win player, representing an improvement of ~1 win over Castillo. It’s also worth considering that committing to O-Dawg will block Reese Havens, a prospect with a wonderful offensive profile (in regard to isolated power/patience and relative to position).
You know what would be an ideal solution? Signing a backup middle infielder who can actually field (Craig Counsell and Adam Kennedy come to mind) to supplement Castillo. A healthy Luis is likely to earn his contract, or something close to it. The Mets are better off buying wins elsewhere.

i agree
i want a real back-up MIF who will hoover the shit out of baseballs. play him with pelfrey on the mound.

True
I keep forgetting that Everett is on a one-year deal.

What is Heyman's problem?
Yeah, this is what the mets said last year, but big difference between trying to trade Luis Castillo coming off an awful & injured 2008 w/ 3 years left on his deal and trying to trade Castillo coming off a healthy & productive 2009 w/ 2 years left on his deal.
I dont think I advocate going that route, unless they get a ton of salary relief in the Castillo deal (which I don’t really see happening). Even then, I’d probably be just as happy w/ Tejada at 2B after playing 2B all fall (and some winter if necessary).

C'mon
You know as well as I do it is much more fun to be snarky and make fun of the Mets than to write anything insightful. (See Sherman, Joel). Plus that would require work – ewwwww.

also
what is there in this Twit (sorry, “Tweet”) to make anyone think it’s any more than idle speculation on Heyman’s part?

No
As soon as I saw Heyman was the one reporting this again, I checked. Per Cot’s, his agent is Paul Cohen.
And yeah buying out most of Luis’ contract and signing Hudson would be a poor use of resources to say the least.
by OlStubbleBeard on Sep 10, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
His agent is Greg Genske. Anyways, this is not important.
So, Heyman is working with several agents now?
When you say it’s a poor use of resources, that makes it more likely to happen for the Mets.

Unfortunately
2B is not exactly one of our most pressing needs. We have to take care of the #2 spot in the rotation, LF, and 1B before I can even consider anything else.

Err
while its obvious that castillo is a shadow of his former self defensively and offensively, it’d be ridiculous to trade him and sign Hudson to a bigger longer contract unless we got real return in prospects.
by METSMETSMETS on Sep 10, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Offensively he's fine
.400 OBP is more that acceptable. In fact he has a .347 wOBA this year while his career wOBA is .331 and is his 3rd highest in his career. If his defense wasn’t atrocious, he’d be right around 3 WAR, but instead he’ll be a 2 WAR player. I find that acceptable and makes his contract, at least this year, more than reasonable. Hudson is average in both respects and would be a waste of money to sign, unless, as you said, we get big time prospects in return for Castillo. Hudson will be about a 3 WAR player probably for the next few years, but he will want at least 10 or 11 million per, and that just doesn’t seem like a good use of our resources.

Do you really think he'll be able to sustain a .347 wOBA going forward?
ZIPS projects a .319 wOBA, and his defense is probably -5 runs at second. That makes him a little over a 1 WAR player.
Smoltz.

No
I was just commenting on the fact that he said Castillo is a shadow of his former offensive self. This year, he has proven he certainly is not. Not saying he will be the same next year, just saying he’s not as bad offensively compare to the rest of his career, quite the opposite in fact.
But it wouldn’t surprise me to see him with a OBP somewhere in between .380 and .400 next year and be a productive player. I just feel that with the holes on this team, second base is not a problem that needs fixing unless it’s a huge upgrade, and Hudson is not a huge upgrade over Castillo.
And how do you think Pujols would look in a Mets uni come 2012?

We could probably offer him more money. I doubt it’ll happen, but a man can dream can’t he? Though I would be sad to see Carlos go.
