Fantasy Cricket
My brother-in-law, Tunku Varadrajan just posted this on facebook. A nostalgia post, an obit he did (unsigned, as is the custom) in 2005 for the London Times of cricketer Eknath Solkar. It is all greek to me, but the statistics and phrasing reminded me so much of baseball writing/hagiography.

Very nice obit
The games, cousins as they are, do indeed carry some similarities. In fact, New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram (for one; there may be others) not too long ago expressed his interest in finding a way to use sabermetric-type analysis with cricket statistics.

Solkar
Didn’t he sound like he had grission: “He scored 1,028 runs at an average of 25.83 (numbers that do not reveal his gutsy utility in a fragile batting line-up), and took a mere 18 wickets at 59.44 each, mostly opening the bowling left-arm at a pace that was clocked, charitably, at military medium.” David Eckstine at bat and Jamie Moyer as a bowler.
Here’s the catch.

Guy sounds like the cricket version of Bill Mazeroski “The humble son of a West Virginia coalminer, Mazeroski was not a feared hitter…”

He sounded like a defensive whiz
50+ catches at short leg is dang impressive, and anyone compared to the great Jonty Rhodes in the field must have been quite a fieldsman.

What the hell are you people talking about?
I know it’s English, but those words in that order don’t make any sense.

A Friend from England
I knew a guy from Manchester. He told me “We have a game like baseball in England called rounders. Little girls play it.”
Only it sounds like “Lit-ul gurls playit”

One of my prouder moments
was knowing the answer to the Cricket question in Slumdog Millionaire. I know nothing about cricket, but somehow I knew that answer.

I doubt
cricket gives a shit. Personally I know very little about it, but my brother-in-law and his expat friends are fanatics. You hafta be, since the tests can last for days.

Five days of play
gives you more time to sit in the stands and drink beers with your friends. Can’t argue with that.

More beer time=WIN
Cricket is a good sport.
And the teams I support have had more success this year than the mets

Wish I could say the same
I support the Black Caps and, well, it’s like rooting for the Mets with more inept management.
