Apparently Murphy and Tobi Stoner will be headed down to the D.R. this offseason for some winter ball. Each team plays a fifty-game schedule that begins the end of October and runs to the end of December.

A quick look at the roster of the Leones and it looks like Murph will be the headliner as far as current major leaguers go. Good for him that hes willing to head down there work on some things this offseason.

Good choice sending Murph down.

Poor Nick Evans.

Comparison. Keep in mind neither player would start on the team.

Player A is a 23 year old right handed first baseman and left fielder. He projects as above average at first base defensively while below average defensively at left field. He is not suitable as a defensive replacement. He has a career MLB 29 OPS+ against right handed pitchers, and a 152 OPS+ against left handed pitchers. This allows him to be a very good situational. pinch hitter off the bench, and a good platoon candidate at first base in 2010. He has room for improvement, and is currently under team control.

Player B is a 30 year old left handed outfielder. He is quite bad defensively in center field, and somewhat above average in the corners. He is not suitable as a defensive replacement. He has a career 102 OPS+ against right handed pitchers and an 81 OPS+ against left handed pitchers. This means he is only an average or below average pinch hitter off the bench, and has no platoon use. He is not getting any better, and will need to be resigned at the end of the season.

Check and mate.

But is Nick Evans a grinder?

Sullivan was on the 07 Rockies and played in that magical September run. He’s a winner.

He's a 23 year old who mashes lefties

He could be useful if we had decent management.

murphy

could use time off.

i don’t see what the DWL is going to do for him, unless he’s playing another position.

dude’s been playing baseball year round for 2 years at least. he could use a mental break.

There are definitly things he needs to work on with the bat

Also, there are a number of ML position players that play in the DWL and I havent seen much negatives to playing baseball year round or the same kind of blame that the WBC gets. It’s a different beast and I personally want Murphy taking ABs against decent ptichers instead of a mental break.

scared me

When I first saw your headline, for a moment I thought it said “to DL”.
So I guess this is good news then.
