I was out and on the drive home

WFAN came on with their sports update…..they were talking about the pitcher from the Rays dominating the Yanks thru almost 6 innings on just 72 pitches, and the dude giving the update said….“Sometimes Oliver Perez throws 72 pitches in one inning”.

I kid you not.

Moyer is 0-1 with a 13,50 era in 2 starts vs the Mets this year

David is hitting .432 lifetime with 3 home runs against him.By that logic Moyer will throw a one-hitter and David we be 0-5 with 5 K’s

by metsguy234 on Sep 12, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Intagibles is bullshit

Jeter’s leadership ability has been indoctrinated into baseball lovers everywhere. Why? Because he was a part of a team that won four championships, because he was the new, young player on the team, and because he was good. None of that makes him a leader, and if you go back and follow everything he’s done, he’s completely dismissed his 3rd basemen because he didn’t like him when a leader would’ve stuck up for him, but that doesn’t matter because the media annointed him a leader. If you win, you have intangibles, if you lose you don’t, it’s that simple.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Sep 12, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think what they mean is that he leads on the field.

as in by example. you know….diving head first into the seats to catch a foul pop….things like that.

by fxcarden on Sep 12, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He took three full strides before going into the stands

Any intelligent person would’ve have slid.

And on another note, fuck Jeter, David Wright actually caught a ball that would have landed in the stands in Seattle a few years ago and he jumped into the stands to do it.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Sep 12, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He absolutely could have slid after he caught the ball.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Sep 12, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the biggest problem I have with that play

Is that is considered to be a wonderful play, and for Jeter it was a great catch, but a faster shortstop gets to the ball quicker and makes the play look easier.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Sep 12, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I seriously doubt that Jeter is unique in diving into stands

He is one of many players who does this. Wright made a play where he broke his face diving into the stands for a pop-up. He was heralded as a winner in 2006 (his least valuable—though most clutch—year in the league other than 2009). He is the same player in 2009 (effort-wise, not productionwise) but he’s a problem because he’s soft, coincidentally, his team sucks during this period as well.

Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa

"Intangibles is bullshit"

Are you honestly doubting the existence of intangibles? Players are people, therefore there is a psychological aspect to the game, an intangible aspect to each player. Some teams are more cohesive than others.

"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner

by metsguy234 on Sep 12, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But if the players are good it won't matter

Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent hated each other and they still came within a game of winning the world series. It doesn’t matter that they aren’t cohesive, as long as they’re good. It’s not football where one guy depends on another to protect him and feelings may* get in the way, there is no interaction like that in baseball.

And I say “may” because they are still professionals and both want to win.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

Here's a question or four for you Metsguy234

Why do you think the Mets lack """grit""" and """intangiables"""? (I used multiple quote marks to emphasize the degree to which I think this is a bullshit meme)

How would these """intangiables""" help the team in terms of getting wins? How many """gritty""" players would it take to get the wins, and what is the process through which the wins will come?

What do you think is the extent to which the Mets problems are """intangiables""" vs. bad management and talent? If the answer is less than 80%-20%, then why do idiots like Rose and McCarver pump up this shit so much?

Finally, if McCarver is so stupid as to think that Victorino is better than Reyes.why should we not treat what he says as the opposite of reality?

Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa

by GenJackRipper on Sep 12, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think the mets problem is threefold

1) bad players
2) bad management
3) lack of leadership on the team

See Yankees 1977

Lack of cohesion can margianally affect a team’s effectiveness. But people who don’t like each other can play well together very well.

The thing is that the press simply pretends that all winning teams are gritty and cohesive and non-winners fragmented and alienated or lazy. First they invent the correlation, then they falsely present causation.

and there was two or three on the Tigers with Ty Cobb who hated black people, Ty Cobb would still be the same great player he was, regardless of his teammates.

Ok, give me percentages

I would say:

95% bad management that does not know how to build a team with 4 spuperstars and 140 million dollars. (including Jerry Manuel being a dolt)

4.9% players: Wright is the only one having a bad enough season where you can blame him.
0.1% grit, and I’m being generous.

He elbowed Jose Reyes in a double-play attempt

You are a Met fan aren’t you? What’s the point of being a Met fan if you can’t hate a player on a rival team that elbow’s one of your stars?

And remember

the game last year where he was whining at the plate ’cause he almost got hit?

Victorino is a whiner AND overrated.

From wikipedia:
“After being brushed back by Hiroki Kuroda, Victorino began to gesture towards the non-English speaking pitcher that it was alright that he throw inside, just as long as he didn’t do so at his head. After grounding out to second, he continued to gesture at Kuroda and benches from both teams cleared. Victorino quickly became the villain for Dodger fans and was booed each time he came up to bat. After the game, Victorino was fined $2,500 by the league for his part in the incident”

Exactly

Why can’t we think that he’s a douchebag just because he’s on the Phillies? Is that so wrong?

Just to show you that I am objective about who I call a douchebag, here is alist of famous Met douchebags

1. Bobby Bonilla
2. Vince Coleman
3. Armando Benitez
4. Tom Glavine
5. Jerry Manuel
6. Ricky Henderson

What shenanigans has he done?

Is it the injury or the whole enjoying playing baseball thing? If Jose was white with the name Joseph, people would be talking about his enthusiasm for the game, but since he’s Latin, he’s a crybaby.

What showing up other teams?

He dance’s after a home run, Victorino actually turns to the Mets’ dugout and claps in their face after a home run. Nobody hated on Nick Swisher for his dances after home runs, cause he’s white, I sincerely believe that. And what, Reyes didn’t run out a pop up twice in 6 years? That’s lazy? Every player does it, he just got caught cause they dropped?

Can't realistically catch Baltimore

They’re 4 games “up” for the #4 pick, but they’ve got 7 with Tampa, and I think 6 with the Yankees, which makes things tough. Cleveland’s realistic at 2 up, so #5’s doable.

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
