Takahashi out?

Well, he is 40
I’m gonna go watch some football

Giatns won

So I’m in a good mood, can’t risk watching. How’s Pedro looking?

by Jsz on Sep 13, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

Again, I’m afraid of watching-are Joe Morgan and Steve Philips commenting?

by Jsz on Sep 13, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Phillips is there

Well

Why not? Luis was just about the only one left standing next to Murph.

You have to give him some credit

for staying healthy.

And you know he’s gonna be back. No way we’re getting rid of that contract.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I suppose you're right

But jeez……can you just drive the ball instead of the bunts.

by fxcarden on Sep 13, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

At least ESPN

is going on and on about there is no way ANY team can overcome the injuries to the starting 25 the NY Mets have. No way can you compensate for that.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, Metsblog fail

they don’t even have a game thread going.

by fxcarden on Sep 13, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

I can't be bothered on that blog.

Who wants to ‘audition’ to be able to post a comment?
I mean, what is up with that? I’ve never seen that anywhere on any blog.
He just lost control of that blog.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that seems insane.

If the goal of a blog is to limit traffic, mission accomplished.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

me neither. I just check in from time to time to see how the rose colored glasses are working.

I think the Mets and/or SNY made him do it. to be fair, the game threads were out of control over there. fun, but out of control.

by fxcarden on Sep 13, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

But I think they could have gotten that under control easily. They have 100 people working on the blog, they can’t have someone spend 15 minutes to audit the threads, and warn/ban people?

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

100 people ?

I thought it was just a handful. Still, you can do all that with software.

I see it as further proof of Mets public relations fail.

by fxcarden on Sep 13, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

haha...well, a handful = 100 when it comes to blogs. ;-)

I don’t think Matt spent enough time on it, to be honest. The Lohud beat writer spends more time on his Yankee blog than Matt does on Metsblog. No excuse for that.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt posts there like 5 times a day

We get 2 maybe 3 posts per day from all the writers here combined.

There is a recap post after every game on MetsBlog. We sparingly get recap posts, and when we do get them, they come around 6 hours after the game has ended.

I wouldn't compare

What Eric, Sam and James do on here requires actual skill and intelligence, he’s just a news aggregate who over uses ellipses to the point where it becomes unreadable. The posts here are both entertaining and many times laugh out loud funny, something you don’t get on Metsblog. And finally, Metsblog is Matt’s profession, that’s his source of income, I’m pretty sure the writers of this site have their own jobs to focus on and do this in their spare time because they love the Mets.

I agree.

But Matt said himself he refuses to turn over control of any aspect of his blog to someone else. Plus, he’s not kind of IT specialist at all so every format change he tried to make just made it worse.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup.

I alternate between this and TRDMB. No one is on there tonight though.

They have

a Real Dirty Dugout for game chats. There’s only a couple of us out there right now though.
It’s a fairly new blog – born from those of us who got tired of Matt’s blog

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

The format and content here is way better. Sometimes it turns into a sabermetric orgy, but aside from that…

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Sabermetric stats are better than anything else we have to go by.

Yeah

I’m with you on this. It’s not so much that he did steroids – which just about everyone did – it’s the fact that he lied to Congress that’s gonna do him in.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Where does that stand?

I lost track…Is there still any date/time where he has to go back to court?

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Good question

Last I heard, he lost his suit against that trainer he was suing.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll get in eventually

It’s gonna be sweet to see Piazza get in and having Clemens wait, but even if he doesn’t get in right away, he’s still one of the best pitchers of all time.

I'm still bitter...

at how much FLA was celebrating knocking us out. Assuming Philly has it wrapped up by then, which is probable, I’d love to ruin their season.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

What was worst?

06, 07, 08, or 09?

I’d say 07 was worst, then 08, then 09, then 06.

I know we had better records in 07 & 08, but it felt a lot more horrible than this year. At least to me.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

IDK

This season is awful. Out of it by June. Such high expectations coming into it.
Second would be ’07. That Sept., each game, just kept sucking the life outta you. And thank you Tom Glavine.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 13, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but at least we have an excuse this year.

We’re more like an afterthought this year, instead of a laughingstock like 07. Like I can wear my Mets gear with a “Hey, what can you do” attitude.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

there must be like 15 people watching this game across the country

with the VMAs and football on

I’m watching football. Not interested in watching Pedro dominate us.

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

I’m surprised anyone is actually in here. Is it because of:

a) The Mets
b) The ESPN crew
c) Something else

by Eric Simon on Sep 13, 2009 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

LOL.

I watch all Met games. No matter how bad the season is. Been doing it for over 40 years.
It’s not summer unless without NY Met baseball.

I don’t follow football so….

ESPN crew? Uh, no……

GKR

If I could get GKR every night, I’d be more likely to do that. Watching the Mets lose, while some Met-hostile clown broadcasters chatter is too much for me.

Q: Why has Tim Redding pitched so well against the Phillies in his career?

Perhaps

But why would that affect the Phillies and not other teams? You’d think with the general stench around Philadelphia that their players would have dulled olfactory functionality by now.

That’s like 3 Mets already banged up in this game.

Off topic question for Eric...

How does the AA blog business work for you?

Like it seems weird that Metsblog is the “official” blog, and Matt would get all sorts of perks from the Mets, given that you must be surpassing Metsblog in traffic.

What are your goals/aspirations for the blog, if any?

by Mex_17 on Sep 13, 2009 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

Traffic-wise

MetsBlog >>>>> Amazin’ Avenue

It’s not even close, really. It’s not a competition, though. Matt links to us a lot, and I know a lot of our readers found us via one of those links.

Our goals for this site are modest: write good stuff, engage our great community, grow that community in a manner that’s consistent with the way we write about/watch Mets baseball. I love that the community here really gets what we’re doing; not only are you not looking for us to conform to some idea of mainstream coverage of baseball, but you are in fact here mainly because we do provide coverage of the Mets that the mainstream media have failed to provide.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
