i'm pretty sure this is totally unrelated to anything anyone said ever.

my girlfriend, possibly
my beard makes Redding’s chin wig look like something he drew on in marker, Theo Huxtable style.

Sign him, and start him againt the Phillies only
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
between which he does long relief to keep his pitching arm in shape
it wouldn’t be the worse decision we’ve ever made…. wait, who am I kidding here

It beats Perez
basically, you have to start him 2 out of 3 games against the Phillies (it can be done with today’s technology)

Redding career vs Phillies
83.2 IP
61 H
4 HR
31 BB
55 K
3 HBP
1.100 WHIP
3.01 ERA, and 5-4 in 14 starts
This is about a 4.38 FIP
could we do worse?
Hell yeah

83.2 IP and 14 starts is half a season
and it’s based over his whole career, I think it’s a big enough sample
Though where is that article about benchmanrks that make constants it was on fangraphs?
(after 600 PA OBP is contstant, etc)

half a season=/= a large enough sample for almost anything significant.
And so what, his other 127 career starts are discarded? That’s the problem with matchup stats. They don’t mean SHIT.

-Tug McGraw
well, they do mean shit after a while
I’m just saying that in 83.2 innings he’s been good better than average.
Maybe he sucks for the next 100 innings
how big of a sample size do you want?

It doesn't matter how much it is.
Because the fact of the matter is that when you cherry pick stats like that, where your only representing 10% of his total starts…it’s just not a good way to display talent.

Even if you wanted to ignore the cherry picking fact and make a sample size argument
here’s how many BF is takes for .50 r-sqaured to be reached via Pizza Cutter’s research via thehardballtimes
K/PA: 150 BF
GB%: 150 BF
LD%: 150 BF
FB%: 200 BF
GB/FB: 200 BF
K/BB: 500 BF
IF FB%: 500 BF
BB/PA: 550 BF
BABIP: Doesn’t reach a 0.50 r-squared at 650 or below.
HR/FB: Doesn’t reach a 0.50 r-squared at 650 or below.
In his career, Redding has faced roughly 350 batters so really nothing good has reached .50 r-squared.
okay okay
Just wanted to show James’ point a little more

Haha
My point is that his great performance this year against the Phillies likely has more to do with random variation than him stepping up in "big games". It was a tongue-in-cheek post that played off the “Oliver Perez steps up his performance in big games” concept that seemed to win over a lot of Met fans last offseason, and apparently the front office too.

It's ok James
Everybody else got it.
You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.
I mean, good for him
but I still wouldn’t want to see him get a contract based on that alone.
