Ike Davis Applesauce - Davis rises to #18, Mets look at free agent pitchers, Dukes is Piazza
Yesterday was a pretty slow news day. Some good little stories in there though. Enjoy.
Meet the Mets
Mets Walk-Offs begins a countdown of the 60 most memorable home runs in Met history.
Matt Cerrone argues that it's going to be a buyer's market for pitching this off-season after looking at the free agent names floating around. I can't wait for the 4 year - $50 million offer to Doug Davis.
Be sure to check out this season's final Amazin' Tuesday hosted by the Two Boots Tavern and organized by Faith and Fear in Flushing.
Baseball America ranked Ike Davis #18 on their final Hot Sheet of the season and Kirk Nieuwenhuis as a fast riser.
Around the NL East
The Marlins fell to the Cardinals and dropped to 7 games behind Philadelphia.
JA Happ is working his way back from injury, completing a side bullpen session without setback.
Javier Vazquez has been named the National League Player of the Week.
Rob Dibble thinks Elijah Dukes is like Mike Piazza at least in one regard.
Around MLB
New accusations surround Miguel Tejada; this time Pirates closer Matt Capps says he's stealing signs. Last I checked, every team does that.
Twins first baseman and former AL MVP Justin Morneau is done for the remainder of the season.
The Dodgers have activated everyone's favorite reliever Guillermo Mota.
Pat Burrell pleads to the Tampa fan base that he is sorry for this season.
This bad economy has affected minor league baseball as well; for the first time in six years, minor league baseball did not set an attendance record.

Rich Harden
would be interesting if he could be had for a reasonable price. Otherwise, Joel Pineiro please.

on the surface it seems that way but the last thing we need is another guy who throws too many pitches, walks too many guys and can’t get past the 5th inning. watching him pitch live, he reminds me a lot of john maine.
i think you’re hitting on something with pineiro though whose 1.04 BB/9 this year is downright incredible (its usually around 2.5 which is still fine by me).

Absolutely
Though I don’t think we can afford both.
I think we’ll probably spend big on either a pitcher or a position player and then trade for the other while spending the remaining money on role players and relievers to complement internal options.

Minor League attendance
The one year I worked in the minors, I noticed a startling amount of attendance inflation (this was 2003). Teams would work very hard to get that number over last year’s number so they could write the “So-an-sos set attendance record” press release come September. Eventually that catches up to you (in addition to a shit economy).
One time I had to work a Kannapolis Intimidators Wednesday afternoon game. You could count the people in the crowd on your fingers (9 in fact). Announced attendance 500 or so. Now, even if you’re counting season ticket holders who didn’t come, you don’t get near 500. I remember walking into the press box and asking “do I need a press pass or anything?” Answer: “Nope, just friends and family today”

Pineiro would be a great pickup, as would Duncan
I vote for a package deal

The question is
Would you take LaRussa to get that package?
I vote we bring those three plus Holliday from the Cardinals.
McCarver too
Personal catcher

Sadly
they’ll probably ask for Keith in return for all these players, and we’ll be forced to reject the proposed trade.

Trade
La Russa, Duncan, Pujols, Holliday, Carp, Pineiro, for GKR. Oh, and they throw in Buck and McCarver

If we get Buck and McCarver
then I’m. I don’t care, I’m not listening to them on a regular basis. I ’d rather stay in last place then listen to those two.

i'm not sure how i feel about piniero
i mean, dave duncan, out of nowhere, etc. etc.
on the other hand, ryan dempster, cliff lee, displaying repeatable skills.
if we get him, we NEED a defensive specialist MIF who can play behind pelf and him.
like…
RUBEN.
but more like adam everett or something.

UZR of -1.5 and UZR/150 of -7 for this year
But i take the Sheapark factors
so its -3.4 UZR before this year and -12.7/150

Wait what?
I’m talking about Valdez, comment confusion:
Valdez
@ shortstop
2009 UZR: +1.1
Career UZR/150: +16.3
@ 2nd base (in 92 career innings so it’s SSS)
Career UZR/150: +33.5
A-Hern
@shortstop
2009 UZR: -1.5
Career UZR/150: -19.7
@ 2nd base
2009 UZR: +1.8
Career UZR/150: +7.8

We messed up on not getting Wolf once
how about we get him this time? Citi is a good fit for him. He’s obviously more pricey now, but not break-the-bank pricey. I’d prefer him over Piniero.
I would agree with you on Wolf
If he wasn’t a lefty. Last year was the time to sign him over Ollie. We only have two righty starters Pelfrey and Maine and I’m not confident we will ever see Maine again. In my opinion it is imperative that we get rIght handed starter.
Wolf for the epic wolf!
And disregard what Delgado says. What, we can’t win with four lefties? You’d rather have a bad righty pitcher than a good lefty one? Sure, if we have the luxury of choice, I’d pick a righty. But idk if we have that.

Good Righties are looking slim
but i wouldn’t want a bad righty over a good lefty.
You know I’ve been a big Lackey fan, but he’s gonna cost a fortune. Piniero is the best option and Marquis is one that would be tolerable. I’d put Wolf and Marquis about even, but Wolf is having a much better year. Other than that it is only freeagents with high upside and low risk but nobody I’d be comfortable as our number 2.
I really want Lackey. He’s 31 has pitched over 20 games since 2003 and he won a world series. I just think him back to back with Santana would be a sick 1-2.
World Series=Team Leader
And we need one of those

Totally Cliche
I know, I just remember the poise that he had as a rookie in those WS games. That is important for a pitcher. Plus he would have hit Sandoval for Wright when he got hit in the head.
so he has grission?

Wolf Man is
Randy Wolf and judging from his comments he wouldn’t be too enthusiastic about coming to New York.
Wow
How did I not discover those “wolfman” posts until just now? Shows what I get for stopping paying attention just because the Mets blow.
