The Mets believe Francoeur will look sharp in their 2010 uni, so much so that they are inclined to approach him about signing him to a three-year contract that would allow him to become a big league Beau Brummel, if he so chose. They like what they have seen of him in and out of uniform -- from his spirited demeanor to his nuclear arm to the two doubles he produced Saturday afternoon in their victory against the Nationals.

Well guys, it's been fun.
But if this happens for anything much higher than what $4-5 million, I’m out. Seriously. I’m done. Until some sort of change is made in the front office or ownership, this organization wide evaluation ineptitude is going to continue. I really don’t want to do this…I love the Mets. I really do. But the last thing I need is to devote my time and passion to a team that’s never going to get any better.
So don’t fucking do it.

Seriously
Signing this guy to a three year extension is ridiculous within itself. I knew management had lost touch with a few things but this is ludicrous. There are no quotes from the club but if they’re this optimistic as the writer makes it seem; they’re out of their fucking minds.

$12-13M
I agree, it should be under $5M/yr. I doubt he would get more than 3years/$15M if he were a FA. But he’s not a FA unless the Mets non-tender him. I would offer $12.5M for 3 years. Something like 3.5+4+5. I don’t see him doing much better than that through arbitration.
The arbitration process is designed to encourage teams and players to negotiate and agree before things get to arbitration. This is one way to do that. So nothing wrong with making an offer, per se, it’s just the Mets history of absurdly overvaluing marginal players who play well in a small sample that makes me a bit apprehensive.
I also don’t know why everyone is so reluctant to go to arbitration, though. If you lose in arbitration, it’s at least not a guaranteed contract. You can release the guy and only owe 30 days pay. I think you could probably win offering $3-3.5M in arbitration, and it would be worth releasing him if he got awarded as much as $5-6M.

who are the children in the mets front office that are telling marty this?
how can marty seriously believe them? making a fly by night, chuck shit against the wall, who gives a fudge trade in the midst of a tanking season is one thing, but buying this terarded line of horseshit about francoeur’s winning personality and strong throwing arm somehow makes him a valuable baseball commodity?
i’m serious, who the hell, from the dumbest fan on up to wilpon, possibly believes this garbage? are we a bunch of 3rd graders, so easily duped into eating a plate full of wretch inducing brussel sprouts? enough of this crap.
STOP SHITTING IN MY MOUTH AND CALLING IT A SUNDAE, METS.
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

I've come to like Frenchie, he's charmed me
But a 3 year contract would be travesty in every way, no matter the price. (I mean, unless it’s 300 grand a year.) Anything more than 1 year would be a travesty.
However, I some time ago made a solemn vow to not let anything Marty Noble writes bother me, so I’m going to ignore this until there’s actually something to be bothered about.

sigh.....
Maybe it’s time to stop thinking about the Tampa Bay Rays as my AL mistress and start actively rooting for them primarily.
At least its football season and the Giants looked OK last week.
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

They didn’t sign John Maine to an extension after intimating they would a couple years ago.

We really should have expected this.
There was never really any doubt. Alex Cora got 2.5 mill, and he doesn’t even give the illusion of being valuable.
Expect the worst. 4 mill per year for 4 years.

folks keep in mind the source here is Marty Noble
not themost reliable. I think Francour will be here next year which is bad enough but I am going to go out on a limb and say no way even Omar signs him for three years.
by Endys Game on Sep 20, 2009 8:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why would you think no way?
Francoeur’s numbers with the Mets and his draft-pick status pedigree are more than enough for Omar to think that a 3yr/18mil. contract would be a steal. I think you give Omar too much credit. The “brain” trust of the Mets is bound to see Francoeur as a classic case of a “change of scenery.” Bank on a multi-year deal. We are the Pirates now.

Frenchy
The big thing with Frenchy while he’s been a Met: he’s hitting a LOT more line drives.
Career: 19.7%
2009 with Braves: 17.6%
2009 with Mets: 24.9%
Assuming this is unsustainable, we should be ready for the other shoe to drop soon.
But there is other good news: Frenchy is gradually gotten better at avoiding strikeouts.
2005: 22.6%
2006: 20.3%
2007: 20.1%
2008: 18.5%
2009: 15.4%
A high LD% and a low K%, in combination, generally produce a good batting average. He’s probably never going to walk very much, but if he compensates for that with good BA, he’s a serviceable player. Again, any optimism (I think) is contingent on Frenchy hitting live drives at a better rate. But based on his performance as a Met, I am happy to bring him back on a one-year deal. (I think three years is silly.)

small sample size
also, he has been below replacement this year even with a .280 avg. and he doesn’t hit for much power.

Oh I agree...
I think it is highly likely that the LD% is unsustainable, but I’m willing to throw him a year on the off chance that it is.

ugh
remember its Marty Noble… not to be trusted. I dont think even omar would go three years.
I would think that they are happy with him, and someone mused to marty that mets brass could see him being here for 3 years. But even Omar has to realize it would be crazy to not offer him 1 year and see if he can sustain this.
based on how he has played since coming here, I think he has earned another year. If you have him and pagan (along with lets say another awesome LFer… craw or hol) I can see it as a good hedging of the bet that one of them breaks out next season.
but 3 years? after being awful for so long and only playing well for a small sample size? No. Not even Omar.

Playing good (relatively) for 65 games does not earn someone an extension,
especially after a history of being horrible. You should give (or not give) Francoeur a contract on his projection going forward.

3/15, and YOU'LL LIKE IT!
The Mets FO are going to see Francoeur as just the shot in the arm the club needs after the disaster of 2009. That he plays hurt will appeal to Freddy and Omar as well, since they’ve made it clear they think even decapitation can be overcome with a little grit. Signing Frenchy to a 3 year deal will “show” the fanbase they’re committed to winning. I’m guessing 3/15.
I do think his performance with the Mets has earned Francoeur the fourth OFers slot going into 2010. In fact, I think he’d be one of the better 4th OFers in the majors. What’s that worth—1/3 or so?
