As seen on the 6:00 PM news..

On channel 5 (Fox).

Citi Field will see over 1,000 police officers tonight. Tight security due to the terrorist plot.

why attack citi?

watching the mets is worse than anything terrorists could do anyway. In seriousness though thats pretty crazy.

I play the geetar.

that's some serious gear, you must kick ass.

I play mostly classic rock. We play out from time to time, and cover everything from Pink to Pink Floyd. I mostly play rhythm.

‘79 American Strat, an ’85 Ibanez, a brand new Tele, a Fender Showmaster and a couple of acoustics. I play thru a Peavey amp, and I’ve got some stomp boxes for effects. Nothing fancy.

No one on this team can bunt worth a damn. Add that to the ST drills next year.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 22, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

back in the day when I used to coach,

I made the kids bunt the ball inside a circle. if they missed the circle, they ran one lap for every ball.

by fxcarden on Sep 22, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I also made the outfield throw the ball into a garbage can laying on it's side at home plate.

didn’t matter how many bounces as long as they touched the can. if you missed, you ran.

If he throws out the runner at the plate, you got a serving of french toast... ideally on a plate

I can’t argue with that. If only he can pull off what Rick Ankiel did (to 3rd base) in that Cardinals – Rockies game, though… at Coors Field, no less! (not too far from deep CF wall that stretches out to 424 ft.)

I would have said no two months ago. But have you looked at the 1st base free agents? Pickins’ are slim and some are not gonna be worth the money. Maybe keep Delgado (if you can get him cheap on a one year), keep Murph too. 1st base covered in 2010 and hope maybe Ike Davis is ready in 2011.

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 22, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

$$$

Injury concern, high priced contract, and my article below explains it all!

The Mets can’t wait until next year to start making the necessary improvements – the time is NOW. The Mets can free up some necessary payroll from their free agents, who are C Brian Schneider ($4,900,000), 1B Carlos Delgado ($12,000,000), SS Alex Cora ($2,000,000), LF Gary Sheffield (only responsible for $400,000 of $14 million contract), LF Fernando Tatis ($1,700,000), and RHP J.J. Putz ($6,000,000 this season, $9,150,000 club option with a $1,000,000 buyout). That’s $27 million in payroll right there… Carlos Delgado, despite his production, isn’t worth picking up the tab for, as he will be an oft-injured payer who might not do much to justify any salary he might get – the Mets could sign him for less, but Daniel Murphy has a strong hold at the 1st base position, anyway… the Mets could free up $16,150,000 in payroll.

$16.15 million is not a lot of money – and this is assuming they re-sign Tatis and exercise Putz’s option. Invest the money where the need necessitates, I say!

by MetsFan4Decades on Sep 22, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Bleh.

1.00 or under: Flat nasty. Stellar. Very few pitchers will achieve this feet. Maybe a real filthy closer or a Randy Johnson/Pedro Martinez/Greg Maddux during their prime.

1.01-1.20: Very good. Very respectable. A pitcher with these type of numbers doesn’t let many guys on and is likely to be a successful major leaguer.

1.25-1.40: These numbers are decent to fairly average.

1.40-1.50: These aren’t very desirable numbers and these pitchers likely have control problems or don’t have what it takes to be in the big leagues.

1.50 and above: Gascan is the first thing that comes to mind. Given the opportunity to bet against a whip above 1.50 (if at decent odds) is a great proposition. This is a hurler who constantly has guys on base which is a losing proposition in MLB.

Maddux = Unbelievable

Quite possibly the greatest groundball pitchers to have ever lived! He was not a strikeout pitcher by any means

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
