Why The 2009 Mets Failed: Part 2

In case you're wondering, Jeff Francoeur wasn't acquired until the beginning of July, by which point the Mets' walk rate had already been in a steep decline.

You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.

How much of this..
is based on the fact the Mets lineup was so terrible opposing teams had no reason not to challenge all of their hitters? You guys are smarter than me, so maybe someone can help me with this. I’m obviously annoyed by the team’s complete lack of plate discipline, but I have to assume no one’s pitching around Murphy, Pagan, Valdez/Cora the way they would Delgado/Beltran/Reyes.
Of course, when you show no interest in Dunn but love Francoeur, you’re sending a pretty clear signal to your players that walks don’t matter. And that you’re a moron.

They've had tons of base runners all year
they don’t have guys to drive them in. Nor do they have clutch hitters.
See Tatis, Fernando

Tons is overstating it
7th in the NL in OBP due to a great average and a poor walk rate.
But walks weren’t the Mets worst department offensively. We all know it was power.
Essentially, the Mets were a singles-hitting team this year. No power and little patience. Of course with the injuries, it’s tough to tell what that says about next year.

7th in NL in ob is middle of the pack.
Clutch is a moronic statement. I thought Tatis was “clutch” last year? It is called sample size.

you could call it whatever you want
He’s like 1 for 35 with RISP and 2 outs.
I call that sucking

He just isn't
that good. Which is another problem with Omar. He catches lightning in a bottle with guys like Valentin and Tatis yet doesn’t recognize that these aren’t the types of players you pay more than 450-800k.

def correct. He overvalues the heck out of old complimentary players

We can all agree
Jerry and Omar are really really bad at their jobs.

Hmmm...walks and homeruns eh?
Now where could Omar have found that this past offseason?

Welcome to the Giants world. Walks and OBP is really everything.
I still believe in Ryan Garko...........

it's not just walks
it’s that they’re not pitching, or fielding, or hitting for power, they don’t have strong management, etc

none of that stuff matters
the reason they’re bad boils down to the fact that they give Jose Reyes a paycheck. When are you stat nerds gonna realize that Reyes is a loser and the second the Mets cut him loose, they’ll start to win again.

i get this small feeling

haha no worries
I’m just getting more and more bitter as the season goes on, so my humor is getting darker. Although a very small part of me wants them to trade Reyes and then see him have an MVP season somewhere and the Mets shatter the ’62 record for most losses in a season, just to prove the morons in the MSM, Philadelphia, and most of NY wrong.

All that would prove
is that Wright is the problem, not Reyes. At least that’s what they’d say.
