Oliver Perez is way overpaid and doesn't produce for the team ever.
Jose Reyes annoys the hell out of me. People always get on my ass about this, but personally I feel that he's not good to have in a clubhouse.
Nick Evans is so overrated it's not even funny.

I really don't get the Omir hate
he didn’t trade Castro, Omar did. He’s a journeyman who’s had a perfectly respectable season as a platoon catcher (290 PA’s, it’s not like he’s been up 600+ times) – to me he’s one of the few Mets this year that’s exceeded expectations and should be cheered for, not despised.

If I may present a case...
It’s not that Omir that RaM hates, it’s the perception of him. For instance, the small sample sizes of him being good (not just adequate, which he is and IS a nice surprise) led to Omar and the fans thinking, “Duh, trade non-hustling Castro”, fucking us over. So it’s not Omir he hates; it’s what he represents.

Do Omar and Wilpon count?
If not, Ollie. Even though it’s not his fault that his agent duped Omar into giving him a pile of money.
Actually I can’t even muster a Bobby Bonilla-ish visceral hatred for any of these 2009 Met players.
None seem like sociopaths, and they mostly just stink in various ways, which isn’t their fault. They’re trying, and pleasant enough, they just aren’t any good.
I feel sorry for them more than dislike them.

OLIVER (bleeping) PEREZ!
Hence the Bucky Dent reference, courtesy of Red Sox Nation.
Lets review the facts:
1. Oliver Perez challenged the Mets last year in a salary arbitration case last year AND WON! (February, 2008) It was the first time any player beat the Mets in a salary arbitration case, since David cone in 1992. Perez, who was on a $2.325 million salary before, was given a $4.175 million raise that increased his salary to 6.5 million!
2. Perez basically swindled the Mets out of excessive funds by convincing the Mets to sign him to a $12 million/3-year deal ($36 million). WTF, Mets front office mental patients!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!
3. Everybody remember this reference I made before?
MR. TOXIC ASSETS
Is he laughing or grieving? This is a classic Mona Lisa paradox.
Oliver Perez is a f’king sc*mb*g! The Mets need to dump Mr. Toxic Assets at their earliest possible convenience. This cur is the biggest waste of money EVER for the Mets, and he is just as big, a piece of sh*t. And that’s saying it nicely, too. He is vile sc*m – I am literally at a loss for words. If I were to relay my exact sentiments on Perez here, I could very easily receive a PERMANENT BAN from Amazin’ Avenue.
I’m sure you catch my drift.

All of this is Boras, though
I don’t dislike Ollie and I really want him to get straightened out, not just for wins purposes, but because it’s more fun to wonder what the hell is going on in his head when you can believe something is going on.
I really don’t believe Perez has been any evil mastermind of his contract status. Hell, I’m not sure he can hold a thought in his head from one minute to the next.

Seriously, that guy is almost like the Adolf Hitler of baseball – he uses one-sided propaganda to sway the front office m(asses). What a sad dumbass Minaya was – any GM should know that when going into a contract negotiation, hire a damn statistician and a lawyer! That’s what Theo Epstein does. (Heck, Bill James is the Boston Red Sox’s Senior Advisor on Baseball Operations! With THAT guy, you may not even need a lawyer.)

defensively, Jose Reyes is one of the leagues best defensive shorts, to the extent were his defensive skill sometimes surpasses his offensive. reyes has very little flaws to his game (only things he needs to improve on, but not “flaws” in the sense were he’s doing something wrong that could prove detrimental to the team) and his clubhouse attitude has never been a complaint. reyes is 1 of our best players, n we’ve suffered a lot without him this year

bb-rod and schneider don’t get any love from me. Also i’m honestly not entirely a fan of Angel Pagan, although thats heavily a function of them playing him in center field so much. I don’t mind him in a corner outfield spot where he belongs, although his decision making leaves something to be desired. Gary Sheffield always has been and always will be one of my least favorite baseball players, and it was like a punch in the face to have to watch him as a Met. I agree Jose Reyes shouldn’t be in the clubhouse, in that he should be on base, at all times.. or fielding. But unless that is what you meant by him being bad in the clubhouse I have no idea what you mean. If anything he seems to give energy to the players around him.

Johan = 3.13
Beltran = 332 BA, 422 OBP
Wright = 307 BA, 392 OBP
Castillo = 310 BA, 396 OBP
there are others that pass the test, I’m just too lazy to look them up.
My point was, there is a suck line below which players have no business being on this team. We demand excellence. Sure, we can have a couple of guys that live below the line as long as they bring something to the party like awesome defense, but other than that I for one have had enough ot these “pieces” that Omar brings in. I don’t want “pieces”, I want actual working components.

Seriously for metsguy234
The people on talk radio who say these things have no brains or credibility.
Be honest about this. Do you know Jose Reyes? Have you heard any of the Mets complain about him? Have you heard of him doing something outrageous or insulting his teammates (like say Milton Bradley, Gary Sheffield, or Billy Wagner)?
All you know about Reyes is that he used to celebrate after winning and smiles a lot. There are beat-writers (beat-offers in my book) who think this is unprofessional and an affront to the game; some of those beatwriters (of course) used to enjoy Reyes’ exuberance, and protested the Yankees’ corporate attitude--when the Mets were winning—like Steve Somers. I stopped listening to Somers when he—like the lowest elements of Mets fans—turned on his best players when the Mets started losing. All of the sudden, their exuberance became arrogance, Beltran’s grace became casualness and laziness, and people started to give a damn about what the Phillies and Marlins thought, based on the absurd premise that somehow the Mets’ antics motivated the Marlins. Tell me the truth, do you think the Marlins “extra motivation” had anything to do with Glavine crapping the bed on the last game in 2007?
Lastings Milledge said it best when asked about the Mets motivating the Marlins—“Man fuck the Marlins!” That is the attitude the Mets and their fans need to show toward the imbecile New York media. They are stupid metsguy. Don’t take your cues from them. Trust me. Simon, Sam, James K, and most of the rest of this community is much smarter, and we should appreciate the work they do.

excellant. I have always despised all those people who knocked the Mets for celebrating “too much.” Let them do what they want. If Jose wants to be exuberant, let him. It is beyond bogus that he has received as much hate as he has this season, be it for the celebrations or for being a “wimp” for not coming back from his injury. The guy is trying to get back just to play the last game of the season. If that isn’t heart I don’t know what is.
I apologize if I offend by saying this, but if he was white the hate wouldn’t be anywhere near like this. If David Wright had this injury he would be praised to the skies for attempting to come back at all. It kills me that people who claim to be Mets fans are so willing to dump on the people who brought them within sight of a world series appearance only 3 years ago.

Who are you standing up for in your hatred of Jose Reyes? Are players crying in the clubhouse because of his handshakes? Are they trembling in terror as he taps them on the shoulder in the middle of what seemed to be an innocent slapping of palms? Do you interview players at the end of games and find that the visiting team needs to go to therapy to get over Reyes’s “antics” (which mainly involve basically just being happy)? Are you aware that gasp it isn’t just Jose doing this, but the rest of the Mets as well?? Do you want to trade away all of the Mets?

Ugh
So the fact that he has a happy disposition is pimae face evidence that he doesn’t care?
Or he has to be in a fowl mood whenever you want him to be?
I’m trying to reason with you and give you the benefit of the doubt, but this is starting to get ridiculous. Your last comment implies that you really resent Reyes’ cheerfulness. Do you realize how capricious that is?
Really, it’s possible that you are simply WFAN’s target audience: those whose foolishness is invincible-impervious to reason or common sense. You can stay there if you want and be part of the problem. With the information we have now, there is no reason to hate anybody on the Mets, especially Reyes. He has done nothing except be a great player and be happy. The others have done nothing but accept contracts for absurd amounts of money that they could never justify in production—as any player would.
Stop thinking about hating the Mets. It’s a pointless waste of your mental energy. The fact that you are even contemplating hating players evinces a lousy approach to being sports fan. They’ve done nothing but play—there is nothing to hate. If you want, hate the Wilpons who seem to be greedy mother****ers who love a good scam. Hate the NY media for being rumor-mongering irrational ingrates. Hate Jerry for taking every opportunity to trash Ryan Church out of sheer malice and driving good players out of town out of stupid petty capriciousness. I would not even hate Omar, who is incompetent, but not nasty like the aformentioned folks.
You have the right to your opinions, but it does not make stupid and petty ideas any less stupid and petty. Be prepared when you are in a community of sane people to take some heat for stupid ideas.

Questionnaire
1. If you were the Mets GM, what would you do with Reyes?
2. Since you’re not the Mets GM (thank God), what can you do about the Reyes “problem” you speak of?
3. Which would you rather see – Reyes with a 5.0 WAR or Reyes without the energy?
4. How would you compare Jose Reyes to Joba Chamberlain in their celebratory moods?
5. Who would you give the 3 year $36 million contract to? Jose Reyes or Oliver Perez? Come on, tell the truth…
6. Who is a better teammate – Jose Reyes or Gary Sheffield?
7. Who would you rather have on the team? Jose Reyes or
8. Would you rather have
OR
?
9. If you do want to trade Jose Reyes, which trade would you make, and what would you ask for in return?
10. See how Jose Reyes is all serious? Is this what you meant?

answers
1. Tell him to calm down.
2. I can’t do anything, because I don’t know him.
3. Why can’t we have both? A Reyes who plays well, but doesn’t act like a 5-year old.
4. They’re both obnoxious in their celebrations.
5. Reyes. That’s not even a real question though.
6. I personally would rather be on a team with Gary Sheffield.
7. Reyes. The talent gap is so large that how the players are in the clubhouse really isn’t a dealbreaker in that one.
8. I’d rather have both. A Reyes who gets mad when he strikes out, and a Reyes who gets excited when he does something good. Sadly the former is rarely the case.
9. Any trade that’d get us top prospects or a good shortstop I’d take.
10. I don’t know what you’re getting at with that one.

I understand
.# 10 was kind of a joke, though. I would have to disagree with # 6, but we only know so much about the players personally. The same goes for # 9, since Reyes is a safer bet than an unknown, and only Hanley tops him at what he does. By the way, check out this article.
As for # 4, I think Joba is much, much worse – sometimes, he looks like a dumb drunk. (Hence the fact he got pulled over for DUI last year) Both of us definitely agree on # 5, though.
One thing I do recall, however, is that when Willie had Jose on the leash for his celebratory activity, his productivity began to decline. Having a cake and eating it as well isn’t easy to do.
But I understand what you’re asking for – I’m not sure if it’s practical, though.

Dude
You really don’t realize how arbitrary this hatred is? You really think that Reyes’ natural exuberance means he doesn’t care about baseball and that being happy is grounds for being hated if it so happens to be in a blowout? You don’t understand how stupid this is? You think that Sheffield, who really has been a problem to his teammates at times, is a better teammate than Jose, because Jose smiles? This is beyond mindless.
Unless new info comes out about Jose that shows him coming to work drunk and pissing in Stokes’ coffee, your resentment of Reyes is baseless and irrational.
I don’t know what hangup you have with Reyes. Maybe you subconsciously blame him for the Mets’ problems the last 3 years and you don’t have enough intelligence to understand what the real factors are. Maybe you do not have the brains to be directed by anything except brute impulse. The one redeeming thing about that is you are not alone.
If that’s the case, as it seems to be, the one hope for you is either the Mets start winning and your hind-brain goes from angry to happy, directing you to like Reyes until the Mets lose again. Either that or the WFAN people who get your uncritical zombie-like attention start to come to their senses about Reyes. Either way, it’s obvious that thought has to be bypassed.

So be serious you have to look serious
He look serious when he’s at bat, is that not the time to be serious? He could be singing a song while he’s at bat, if he’s productive, who gives a fuck?

"There's times when he needs to be serious"
Like when? Give me an example of a time Jose NEEDS to be serious (Note that I said NEEDS, not just because you just want him to, but because there is a serious consequence if he doesn’t) and he isn’t, and how this effects the outcome of ANYTHING at all.

Read this. Sheffield is like that. Reyes isn’t. And Sheffield, if he was any productive now, could ruin a team like that other guy did.

Because you have no reason to hate him
you actually made shit up about why you hated him. If he personally wronged you I’d understand it, or if he killed someone drunk driving, or called out other players I get it but you hate him for the sake of hating him and advocate trading him because you hate him. It’s absurd.

Of Course, they all smile
wouldn’t you if you were getting paid MILLIONS of dollars to play a game? Hell, any “professional athlete” would be smiling knowing that all they have to do is show up and produce a little.
Did you know, Baseball is about the only sport with guaranteed contracts, meaning, if a guy signs tomorrow, and breaks his arm, Tony Saunders style, he gets paid the entire contract to sit and do nothing. That doesn’t happen in Football or Hockey. Go Figure, the two roughest sports, and Baseball is the one with the guaranteed money. I say bring back the Pay-for-Play contracts. Minimum pay with production incentives. That would stop the skyrocketing payrolls fueled by people like ARoid.

Omir, Francoeur
I don’t personally dislike them. I just don’t like the fact that they’re going to be prominent members of the 2010 team even though they are not good at baseball.
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

Omir
is an above average catcher.
He’s as good as 80% of the catchers out there.
And yes, I am aware of his .291 OBP. The catcher position just sucks that much.
by METSMETSMETS on Sep 28, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
uh
Among catchers with 290 PAs or more this season, Omir Santos is 22nd in OBP, well below average. He’s 21st in wOBA, 19th in SLG, 19th in ISO, 21st in OPS, 21st in BB/K, and 23rd in WAR with 0.8. This is all done in the easier offensive league, the NL. He is decidedly mediocre to bad for a starting catcher. Right now, however, he should be our starting catcher, if only because the free agent options are less than appealing and we have bigger concerns. Omir Santos is NOT an above average catcher.

how many catchers have 290 PAs?
I’m too lazy to look, but it’s gotta be close to 40, right? There’s very few teams with a true starting catcher these days – so he’s not above average, but I think he’s right about average.

Quick Question
I left for two weeks, and when I came back it looked like sj10689 took control of the site. Around 30% of the posts are by this guy and they are all long and filled with pictures. Did I miss something? Is this a long time poster repackaged under a new name, or just an overeager (Reyes-ian, perhaps) upstart? I was curious enough to create a name and post for the first time in over a year to ask. Meh, either way, thanks everyone for giving me something to read before I go to work in the morning!

Some misconceptions
The posts are not because I seek attention – I just happen to have opinions on many things in which I respond to. I joined about 3 weeks ago and did not know about the site prior to that. The culture shock has been, to sum it up, overwhelming. (That’s an understatement, to say the least) And some of my filler content have been unfairly misconstrued as “jokes”. (Oops, I used quotation marks again – pardon me for causing yet another unmitigated disturbance…)
But as far as really pressing issues are concerned, I really do need to do something about those big jifs, though… even I can’t stand it. If this site crashes, I don’t want everyone to form angry mobs and start sending me hate mail about how I killed AA – I’ll never hear the end of it!

are we only going with this recent incarnation?
or can we dig up players from the past. I’ve said it before, I’ve been a Mets fan my whole life, and I’ve seen the Ups and Downs ( more downs then ups) that this team has endured. Have you read “the Worst Team Money Could Buy”? I Have.
In the 80’s it was definately Ron Darling. Just couldn’t stand to see him on the mound, could almost guarantee a loss with him pitching ( kinda like ya can with Ollie or Pelfrey)
the 90’s, pretty much anyone, take your pick. There wasnt a player in the 90’s that i could point out as a decent player. Not to mention this was the seed of the Juice Era.
21st Century- well a few players come to mind as ones i “hate”, Sheffield being one of them, he’s the largest tumor in the Mets cancer-ridden “body”. Bigger then Henderson or Bonilla. Benitez was so bad they put up with him for 5 years, the 2nd longest stint of his career, and last I heard he was on with Houston, but put up no stats this yr ( could be cause he didnt play for them, at all, his last game was 6/6/08 for Toronto)
Seriously, who cares what thier clubhouse personalities are like, I’d take a team full of Jose Reyes’ over 1 Sheff or Rickey anyday. I’d take 3 Jonathan Niese over and 2 Wagner’s over another Benitez.
The chemistry of the 86 team will never be refound because of drug testing. Think other teams players weren’t snortin’, think again, they just don’t have someone ratting them out in a book ( oh wait, Jose CanStrikeOut already did that) well then maybe someone will break Hank’s record without juicing ( Ryan Howard pr David Wright are on thier way, cause no matter how many ARod puts up, he’ll get an * by his record for admitting he was juicing with Giambi) and who knows who will knock The Ryan Express off the top of the heap when it comes to the K’s. (sure won’t be KRod if he doesn’t get his act together)
