Current 2009 Reverse Overall Standings
| Num | Team | GB |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Washington | -- |
| 2 | Pittsburgh | 4.5 |
| 3 | Baltimore | 8.0 |
| 4 | Cleveland | 9.0 |
| 5 | Kansas City | 11.0 |
| 6 | NY Mets | 12.5 |
| 7 | Arizona | 13.5 |
| 8 | Toronto | 16.5 |
| 9 | San Diego | 17.5 |
| 10 | Houston | 19.0 |
The Indians have lost eleven games in a row and the Mets have struggled to keep pace, somehow winning three of their last ten. The Royals are surging, winning 12 of 15 before dropping their last two games against the Red Sox.
It's going to be a dogfight to the finish, but if the Mets keep up their strong efforts they could sneak into the top five when the curtain drops on October 4.

can't even play spolier right
I’m going to use this thread to howl about the Mets inability to win ONE FREAKING GAME against Atlanta this week, putting the Braves that much closer to Colorado in the wild card standings, as the Padres (because they have Eckstein, of course) took 2 of 3 from Colorado.
The Rockies are my only hope of not wanting to throw a brick through the TV over the NL playoff picture. I swear, Philadelphia-Atlanta-St. Louis-Los Angeles is literally the worst NL playoff set possible.
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

Top 5 draft pick
is much more important than spoiler.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
schadenfreude
My id prefers another missed opportunity in Atlanta to getting the 5th pick instead of the 7th pick or so. This season has been such a disaster that I’m done being rational. I want to cackle with evil laughter over someone else (the Braves’) misfortune.

The only team I wanted to destroy
was the Phillies. Everyone else I could care less about at this point.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Do you think it might still be possible to screw up the Phillies this year?
I propose we buy up all the beer in Philadelphia the day before the playoffs begin.

Are you saying we should dress up like this guy, go into Philly, and take all their beer?

Beer is good! And stuff!

Yes
but leave them Miller High Life.
"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-
thats just cruel
nobody deserves miller high life, not even philly fans… ok maybe philly fans

If we left only the high life, they might not even notice we took anything at all.

In truth,t hough, I take it back. Philly is a pretty good beer town.

Yuengling's great.
Probably the only best thing to ever come out of the Delaware Valley.
Beer is good! And stuff!
im gonna have to disagree with you on the great part
its drinkable, but low on my list of beers i’d choose to consume.

Understandable
But I’d prefer it over the standard Bud Miller Coors stuff any day of the week.
Beer is good! And stuff!

Do the Rockies not horribly annoy anyone else?
to be fair this is from a few years ago, but it still irritates me that I read it.

Yeah, I don't even know why
They just annoy me. I’m going with the Dodgers. I don’t know why on that, either, I just sort of like them.
Yeah, what bastards
Clinging to religion instead of going out and getting loaded all night and banging whatever female form comes their way. Freaking sons of bitches, I hope they all die!
Seriously, why does this bother anyone? They seemed to have, as an organization, decided to uniformly take an approach that is certainly counter-cultural. They’re not imposing their beliefs on the rest of MLB, nor do they seem to be particularly self-righteous about it.
I didn't read the article
And don’t really know what you’re on about here. They just annoy me. Maybe it’s their streakiness.
Okay, read the article
And have even more reason to be annoyed by them! Really, religion doesn’t belong in the workplace, unless you work for Catholic charities or something. Hire people based on character requirements, sure. That’s fine anywhere. Tying character explicitly to one religion (no matter the caveats you make about how accepting you are) — that should be actionable.
And, just to keep beating the dead horse, this kind of thing goes on, and yet people get annoyed about the showiness of Latin believers pointing to the sky every time they get a hit.
Just for the record, I don’t love that either; I don’t agree with attributing any particular competitive success to God. What, he’s fonder of you today than that pitcher you just got a hit off of?
i dont like them because
people consider them scrappy underdogs, when they won the pennant only 2 years ago
"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner
well they get some credit for pulling an anti-mets that season
and winnning something like 20 of their last 25 to get there. They get some scrap points for that. I agree they can’t be considered an out of nowhere playoff contender anymore though. That said I’m still for Rockies all the way this postseason

well
“Christians, and what they’ve endured, are some of the strongest people in baseball,” says their owner. They’re way scrappy.

Worried
That we might fall below Arizona, though. The ineptitude of the teams “above” us is startling.
Is there that much of a difference in talent between 5 and 6?
I get why getting 15th or better is important due to free agency and obviously you want the highest pick you can get but is there really that much of a difference between 5 and 6 to warrant worries?
Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
Not a huge difference
but there’s definitely a bell curve in terms of talent. As you approach the best talent, the disparity between the elite players is exaggerated. This is why the #1 and #2 picks are usually millions apart in terms of signing bonuses while later signings are much closer.
There is a real difference between the #5 and the #6 pick and it is greater than the difference between #6 and #7, #7 and #8 and so on.
by TheBigStapler on Sep 25, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm concerned with the reports that the next draft is really shallow in terms of talent.
The difference between #5 and #7 might be significant. The Mets are facing a tough competition for the high picks. We need to do worse.
It won't matter
we probably won’t sign the pick anyway, that’s how we roll.
Keep in mind
that the most talented picks don’t necessarily go first – there are always players that drop because of signability. Say what you want, but I don’t think the FO will pass on a superior prospect because of signability. Even if they want to, it would be a PR disaster.
Have the Mets ever failed to sign a first round pick?
by TheBigStapler on Sep 25, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
If they fail to sign the first round pick in 2010, they'll get a compensatory pick in 2011.
For example, if they fail to sign the 5th overall in 2010, they’ll get the 6th overall in 2011 (5th +1).
That was sort of my point.
If it stopped today, I’m looking at Pittsburgh and KC ahead of us, who usually have problems signing their high-end picks so they normally choose the more signable prospect. So, while the Mets would be in the fifth position, they might get the 3rd best guy because of signability issues. To me, it’s not only about where they end up but who is ahead of them in draft order.
Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
thats kinda changed
with the new regime in place. it is obvious they are teams building in the draft especially pitt as shown by the alvarez signing

i am mostly
talking about pitt there
by MetsKnicksRutgers on Sep 25, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
although KC does the same
KC has taken a lot of tough-signability guys the last few years — Hochevar, Moustakas, Hosmer, Aaron Crow, etc.
The Pirates meanwhile spent a lot on the draft this year (lot more that the Mets, sadly) but stuck to an easy-signability guy in Round 1, that NC catcher Tony Sanchez, who was a fringe first round pick to start with.

Good point
But they did take forever to sign him, though that’s not entirely their fault either.
Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
can greinke start every remaining game for the royals?
i think that would ensure a top five spot for the mets.
I don't know about that
Jim Rice doesn’t think he’s dominant, just “good”
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
He's right
Don’t let the 2.08 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 4.87 K/BB fool you.
2009 Mets---Mission: Bryce Harper!
I just don't like the look of that Grienke kid
I mean, the royals aren’t in the playoffs, ie he’s not that good

This gives me a reason to watch
meaningless games on my MLB package. My wife will be so thrilled!
October 4th is my birthday
The first overall pick would be a lovely present.
But I guess I’ll settle for top-five.
We are gonna shock them with 5,000 mega watts of raw ROO POWER.
You know...
Hi-res digital photography is great and all, but I don’t think I actually need to see Luis Castillo’s skin in that much detail.
draftt
you notice the team ahead of us all have have top catcher prospects? excluding washington and if we could pass the royals we could get bryce harper think about it. the pirates have tony sanchez the oriels have matt wieters the indians have Carlos Santana, c so is not imposible to get bryce
no way washington doesn't take him
they paid for strasburg, they’ll pay for harper
