According to Fangraphs' E-F (ERA minus FIP) stat, Pelfrey had the 4th unluckiest E-F in all of baseball. HIs ERA for the season stands at 5.08, while his FIP stands at 4.38. The disparity most likely is a result of Pelfrey's low LOB% (66.4%, which is second-lowest in MLB) and his elevated BABIP (.322).

For fun, check out Ricky Nolasco's E-F (1.77). He was by the far the most unlucky starting pitcher in baseball this year. Look for him and Josh Johnson to be a formidable 1-2 next year for the Marlins.

I expect Livan

to have a big year next year based on this.

uh oh!

We don’t need Omar reading this blog and deciding to give him a 3-year deal….

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

There aren't enough sandwiches

in all of New York City. Dudes at Katz’s would have to be working 24 hours shifts to meet Livan’s needs.

Pelf still had a pretty poor year.

Yes he was unlucky with the defense behind him this year, but he still seems to struggle with the mental side of things (at least it seems that way from watching).

I like the FIP to ERA comp, from the defensive standpoint, but I also think the LOB% really isn’t bad luck and defense. To a degree a pitcher can “choke” and give up big hits with men on base causing that LOB% to be low. It just seems that this year Pelf has really struggled to maintain his focus with men on base.

I still think he can be a very solid Derek Lowe (but better) type of number 2 guy, and he still has some maturing to do.

I think part of it is

Bad defense would make it harder to get groundball outs and thus strand runners. It also extends the inning and is pretty mentally taxing when some catchable balls are going for hits.

I don't deny that

I was just pointing out that its not like Pelf didn’t do anything to hurt his own cause this year and was simply a victim of bad luck.

I’d say there was a lot of bad luck there, but just trying to point out that its not the only contributor to these types of numbers.

THT

Why you can’t subtract FIP from ERA

Though I’m still not sure what to use instead then.

by Michkin on Sep 29, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i'd like to hear fangraphs' take on that

what’s the value of the E-F stat if subtracting FIP from ERA gives us misleading data?
