Mets to sign Molina in the next 48-72 hours
"A source told Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com that the Mets could possibly sign free agent catcher Bengie Molina in "the next 48 to 72 hours."
It's rare that a free agent signing is a considered a foregone conclusion, but this is almost destined to get done eventually. The Mets have held firm on one year, while the 35-year-old Molina has insisted upon a three-year contract. It's very possible that they will meet in the middle."

3rd
I’m assuming since it says meeting in the middle the 2nd year is definitely happening, although i suppose there could be a vesting option for a 2nd year too.

I took asd's question to be asking if you were going to jail for a second or third year.
This is insane. Assuming the Mets sign Piniero for 2/15 or so, the $6m wasted on Molina could go to Garland who would all but insure the rotation is strongly above average even if two of Maine, Perez, and Niese flake out in 2010—something that’s very, very likely to happen.

yeah but they probably think all the pitching problems were
because Omir can’t call games. And the guy who caught all those cy young winners will turn Pelfrey, Ollie and Maine into SUPERSTARS.

The most comical part of this love affair
Is that a wide-array of fans know it’s going to be a failure. Not that it matters for anything — because he’ll suck whether he’s here or elsewhere — but he’s not going to get along well in New York. The guy is extremely sensitive. San Francisco basically put Buster Posey in witness protection during his call-up as not to upset Bengie. He also froze out the media because a writer said that he was slow. HE IS.
I never root against the Mets, but it’s going to take a lot for me to root for Molina. He represents everything I hate about old school baseball thinking and how fed up I am with the team’s fascination with it.

Yeah my biggest concern
is the part of the report that says meeting in the middle.

the most comical part
is even metsbloggers think this is stupid. when you’re gm is getting outsmarted by metsbloggers, you have a serious problem.

we have a united front with metsbloggers

One guy was calling Reyes and Beltran at least 7-9 WAR players
and Wright 6-8. He obviously has no idea what WAR is or how it is measured.
The Mets lobby Omar for a plan, and his plan, he likes his plan. The problem is that he didn't write his plan down 'cause that makes it paperwork, and that’s false hustle... Know what I’m sayin’?
but it's a start right?
when it comes to metsbloggers, we gotta take the good with the bad.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Are you sure?
He may be fully aware of what comprises WAR, and may just be an unabashed homer.

The other poster was using slightly optimistic projections for the core (+.5 to +1.5 WAR each).
And he assumed 2 bench players would post +1.5 WAR each.
even Metsmerized commenters think it's stupid

They're going to sign him to a 48-to-72-hour deal?
I can live with that.

Is there any chance the option could be based on Molina eating a salad during his first year for the 2nd year to vest?
There is no way he gets that 2nd year!

if omar's involved
that’s best case scenario

The thing is, it'll take a lot of leverage to move Bengie Molina.

How I imagine this conversation went:
Omar: “Benjie, we really want you, but only for a year. We’ve been burned with bad contracts before, and I just can’t be giving out too many years.”
Benjie: “I really would like 3 years and all you can eat buffet.”
Omar: “Well, I will absolutely not go to 3 years. One year, final offer.”
Benjie: “well, in that case I’ll take…”
Omar Thought Bubble: "HOLY CRAP IT’S JANUARY 12th ALREADY! WE’RE ALMOST PASSED MY MEANINGLESS SELF IMPOSED DEADLINE. NOBODY ELSE IS EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTED IN BENJIE, BUT IF I DON’T ACT NOW I MIGHT NEVER SIGN HIM.
Omar: “Alright Benjie, we’ll give you 4 years.”
Benjie: “Deal.”
2009 Did Not Happen
God I hope not
If they guarantee him two years, they clearly have no understanding of negotiating position. I can’t ever remember a free agent asking for a multi-year deal who was so transparently unappealing. No one wants him. No one’s going to offer him two years. He could be an asset on a one year deal, and even maybe if there’s a cheapo option next year for him to back up Thole, but guaranteeing him two years would be hurting the organization, not to mention hungry people all over NYC.

If Omar were smart, he would have the vesting option for the 3rd year go into effect if Molina wins the Biggest Loser Competition

In other news ... Ryan Church
signed a one-year/$1.5 million deal to play with the Pirates.
what a shame. we ruined him with the way our organization treated his concussions.

I heard this morning on ESPN radio
that the deal they were working on is for 2 years, but no monetary terms were reported.
Now, ESPN radio has been wrong before, but it still doesn’t sound promising.

coste/santos/blanco and possibly some time from thole, isn’t going to be worse than Molina.

Agreed. 100%
We have a plethora of back-up catchers. I’d rather have some cheap-o combination of them than Molina.

They found
a vest that’ll fit Bengie?
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
They're probably having to sew one big enough
hence why its going to take 48-72 more hours.

It would be great if after 72h they didn't reach an agreement and they decided to go with cheaper options.
I don't think you understand
Omar doesn’t just like Bengie Molina… he is in LOVE with him. Literally.
This will happen.
Thank you, my wishful thinking lasted about 7mins.
Next time I’m daydreaming, don’t wake me up. Even if I’m the one driving the car.
Yeah if it goes to 72 hours with no deal
Omar’s going to add 4 years to his offer.

Maybe he won't pass the physical
There’s always hope. Maybe it will turn out at that he’s actually 56 years old and he has a thyroid problem. Or maybe he’s got a tape worm.
Does it take 48-72 hours
For Bengie to move his ass to sign the contract?
