What Is Gary Matthews Laughing At?
This is the lastest Tweet from Gary Matthews -- former big league player, current Phillies announcer and father to new Met Gary Matthews Jr. "Sarge" is known for his colorful personality and Tweets things you wouldn't expect from a 59 year-old man, but what is the BAHAHA about? Laughing at the Mets? The Angels? His son? Something totally unrelated to today's trade? The last one seems unlikely, considering he hasn't Tweeted in four days. Chances are he's just laughing at the idea of announcing eighteen games a season in which his son is playing. But maybe, just maybe, Sarge has seen Gary Jr.'s Fangraphs page. I got a bad feeling about this
I understand that on paper the trade is basically a wash(although I really liked Stokes) but I just can’t shake the feeling that this guy is going to get crazy disgruntled, weird etc and blow up in our face.
definitely laughing @ the mets
isn’t everyone?

yea he probably views his son going to the mets
as a bad beat, so he’s laughing at the mets by laughing at lil’ sarge
He's laughing
because of two reasons… having to "de"nounce his son for 18 games out of the year and reporters asking why the angels would eat ~88% of his son’s contract for an average RP to get rid of him.
No .... really?
He really said “de-nounce”?
Putting that aside for the moment, Sarge is one of the worst color announcers in baseball. That includes all those “jibronis” from Washington DC, the Marlins, Arizona, etc. He is un-listenable.

He's probably thinking
I wouldn’t trade a beer to get my son of my softball team at no cost, wtf are the mets thinking.

How's their relationship, as an aside? Like Cecil/Prince, or Griffey, Sr./Griffey, Jr.?
Not that it matters all that much, but maybe that’d help unravel this mystery.

Since the "Cerronese" post disappeared
a) WTF is Cerrone’s piece on the Matthews trade actually trying to say? It’s so buried in equivocations, each sentence taking back what the previous one seemed to be trying to say, that it ends up… where?
b) Why was that FanPost deleted? Is there some new policy against making fun of Cerrone’s bad writing and messy “thinking”? I don’t like seeing stuff like that — i.e. FJM-like criticism of Cerrone, a feature of this community that I enjoy — silently disappear, especially while half-witted trolly crap like “what is wrong with you people” stays up and open to comments. Silently disappearing good-faith, discussion-starting posts that don’t seem to violate any actual site policy sort of looks like moderation by arbitrary fiat to me, and I don’t like it.
I posted a Fanshot about Cerrone once that was deleted
I think there’s something we don’t know.
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
if there's a no-mocking-Cerrone policy, it should be made explicit
Secret policy is a bad, anti-community form of moderation. And mocking Cerrone is fun.
weird
It still shows up in the Fanpost master list, your homepage, and the former author’s homepage, but you get a 404 if you try to read it.

Why was it deleted?
Don’t know. I can only guess, though, that it had something to do with content and tact. There’ve been plenty of FanShots/FanPosts criticizing different players/managers/front office people/owners/writers. There’s a big difference saying, “I respectfully disagree with what Marty Noble said”, and “Why didn’t Marty Noble’s mother have an abortion and save us all the trouble?”. I didn’t see the post before it was erased, but it certainly might have something to do with that. Saying, like anonymous said above, “What’s he trying to say? He’s rambling, and going back-and-forth, and makes no sense” is a lot different than, say, “Cerrone is a moron. He needs to go back and get his GED without bribing his teachers.” Or something like that.

It was not impolite
It was along FJM lines – quoting Cerrone, and pointing out a lack of coherence and sense in what he was saying about the Matthews trade.
Although Cerrone did nail it with this:
" the Mets come across as seeming confused, as if they’re just making random moves for the sake of filling roster spots. "
Hard to argue.

It wasn't deleted
It’s just petty to make fun of Cerrone, especially when it’s one of the least offensive things he’s written. It should be back now, I was just suspending it for a while, since Eric can’t review it tonight.
with lots of respect
i gotta voice some support for whoever wrote the fanpost, which didn’t seem particularly petty. all day long we’re in the business of making fun. seems a little harsh to call him out like that.
by Pack Bringley on Jan 22, 2010 10:50 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not calling him out
it’s just that people often complain that our users mocking Cerrone is tired, and frankly I agree. It probably seems hypocritical because I often am very critical or other writers, baseball officials, etc., but we all know Cerrone’s MO, no need to rehash it needlessly. I mean—he writes in that diluted style for a reason, think about it, he’s not actually that confused all the time in real life. And frankly, it’s worked out well for him.
ok
but i’m not buying the “it’s worked out well” defense. it’s worked out well for everyone we make fun of. marty noble writes like that for a reason, too. beating up on (fellow) unsuccessful people is petty.

John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
The Angels. Definitely the Angels.
I don’t know why there is any debate. The Angels are eating $21.5 million and getting back a reliever who throws 97 but very straight. For the Mets, this is a no-brainer. $1 million a year over two years is nothing for a team with a $140 million payroll. It is less than Pagan will make. It’s what they paid Putz to decline his option. It’s less than they ate on Marlon Anderson’s contract when the released him last April.
If he plays well while Beltran is out, great. If not, they can look elsewhere and he can ride the bench and sub or they can cut him and eat the $2 million, no sweat.
The Angels just wanted to get him as far away as possible. “Sarge” is laughing at Arte Moreno.
by Marc from Brooklyn on Jan 22, 2010 9:27 PM EST reply actions
that's my guess too
The tweet, and the laughter, should really be backdated to the moment the ink was dry on Matthews’s ridiculous contract.
the sweat is from the fact
1. we already know there’s almost no chance he plays well
2. by the time the front office realizes that all the cheap options left to back up Pagan will be gone and we’ll be stuck with an awful playing riding our bench for 2 million anywya.

But aren't there better players available for the same amount of money
that doesn’t require giving up Brian Stokes?
There most certainly are/were.
Not that Stokes was super awesome when he pitched- he did pretty good, but most projections showed him regressing, if I recall correctly- but in fixing the lack of depth in the outfield with Beltran out, we now made a hole in the bullpen that needs to be fixed. That there are guys who can fix that hole (ELMER DESSENS!!!), kinda-sorta, doesn’t, I feel, really justify fixing one problem by causing a problem elsewhere.

especially when you're not really even fixing one problem to begin with
since Matthews is only a back up of in name, and really should probably be a teams 6-7th choice.

He's a guy with a glove. That meets Omar's requirements, apparently.
I would have rather taken on Milton Bradley from the Cubs, since at least he has some upside.

Oxymoron, I suppose....not a team player, with personal issues....baseball ability
otherwise, dysfunctional. Makes any sense?
There we go.
I usually don’t care too much about guys like that, but Bradley seems like he’d be disruptive in the club house. Obviously I can’t be certain as I’ve never been in a clubhouse with Bradley or any major league clubhouse at all. I’d still rather have him over Matthews Jr.

I thought the same about Sheffield, when we "stole" him, and that worked out very nicely, all things considered.

What is he laughing at?
He read all of the 700-odd comments to the GMJ trade post. It’s funny in a totally retarded way.

I got home from the pub at about midnight last night and
started reading that thread (I’d left when there were about 30 comments I think). I didn’t get to bed for almost an hour and I still have no idea what any of it was about, other than someone was being obnoxious. Now I have to go back and read it again to find out about the trade, agh.
Might not be, haha
Just go with it

Let me be clear: “Sarge” loves his son, but this is a business. Go Phils!
Don't you think
GMJ’s nickname ought to be “Private” or Corporal" or something befitting his younger age and lesser talent than Sarge’s?

What's not to laugh about?
On top of being traded into the #4 OF spot of a notoriously inconsistent collapse-prone team because he was unhappy in a far more successful team’s #4 OF spot, he went to a team with bullpen troubles…in exchange for a pitcher from their bullpen.
