Randy Winn Signs With Yankees

Joel Sherman reports that it's for 1 year, $2 million. Winn struggled at the plate in 2009 but was strong defensively, as he has been his entire career. He is (was) a better option than GMJ, especially at that price. Another smart move by Brian Cashman.

The worst part

is 10000000 yankee fans are probably bitching about not signing Nady or Damon.

I am OK with GMJ

Winn is a lot older, at least I think I am not looking at their bios right now. I think GMJ with the Anngels paying most of the salary is a decent move

They're the same age

And Winn is actually good at baseball related activities.

GMJ has a shot to be decent with the bat, too

In fact, I would argue it’s more likely Matthews puts up a better offensive season than Winn, based on the leagues they are playing in and their skill sets. But we KNOW Matthews is garbage defensively, and that is supposed to be his greatest asset. So, he sucks.

Yeah that's the problem

he could put up a better season with the bat, and still be no where near as valuable.

To be fair, he'd not have signed with the Mets for $2MM

With the Yankees, he gets a very good chance to start for a playoff bound team.

With the Mets, he gets a very good chance to ride the pine for a 70-win team.

Not sure who said this to me

But someone pointed out that if your job paid you multi-million dollars a year, you’d probably retire after a year or two, unless your job was awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I like my job (a lot, in fact), but if they paid me as much as Winn got from SF the last two years (roughly $18MM), I’d not be here for year three.

So I think it’s fair to say that MLB players aren’t looking for more free time and/or less responsibility. They’re probably willing to give up a few million bucks to be the starting left fielder of a World Series winning team. Heck, I would.

Some, definitely

You don't know that for sure

He’s still a good signing at $3 million. And given uncertainty with Francoeur maybe he would be starting by May.

Of course I don't

But I’m probably right. And all those $1MM add up.

(And, for whatever it is worth, I had him making $7MM on my AAOP team. Crikey.)

by Dan Lewis on Jan 27, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

The Mets are going to give Francoeur more than May

he’s got to suck until the ASB for him to benched

if he has like a .300 obp but is hitting like .270 with a decent number of homers and rbis do we really think they’ll bench him?

Winn has been atrocious in CF for the last three years

according to UZR on fangraphs. SSS applies (450 innings), and his UZRs in LF and RF are still very good, so I’m not sure what the problem is…

Lmao one of my friends is a yankees fans and posted this on his facebook
From Scott Boras: "The Yankees never even made an offer to me regarding Johnny Damon during the entire process." From Brian Cashman: "On Dec. 17, Scott’s exact words were that he would not take a penny less than $13 million a year for two years. We believed him.

by Gina on Jan 27, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

I did some math for one of those aforementioned "bitching Yankee fans"

Johnny Damon’s WAR value in 2010 is being projected to be 3.2. Brett Gardner is being projected to accrue a total WAR value of 2.1. Randy Winn is being projected to accrue a total WAR value of 0.8. Add the two up, and that’s 2.9, which is three tenths less than Damons. The kicker is the difference in price. For Damon’s 3.2 total WAR, the Yankees would have to pay $13 million, or whatever Damon’s last asking price was, in that range. For a combination of Gardner and Winn, they’re paying $500,000 for Gardner and $2 million for Winn. That’s basically $10 million dollars less for roughly the same amount of total offensive and defensive capabilities. I know I for one don’t see .3 WAR as being worth $10 million dollars.

by Brooklyn Dodgers Mets Fan on Jan 28, 2010 3:04 PM EST reply actions

Plus Vazquez's salary will likely replace Damons won't it?

I’m not sure how much else they spent overall but my understanding is overall they’re moves have been payroll neutral, between increases in cost of some players already under contract and adding Vazquez and Grandersons salary. So it’s not even like they’re losing 3/10ths and just saying 10 million they’ve added a crapload of value to the team without increasing it’s cost.

by Gina on Jan 28, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Crap, and I had a nice long response with numbers and stuff that I accidentally cancelled instead of posted.

Long and the short of it is, for an extra million that they get with Vazquez, Gardner and Winn that Damon would have himself cost, they’re getting 7.7 WAR out of $14 million, instead of 3.2 WAR out of $13 million, with Damon.

by Brooklyn Dodgers Mets Fan on Jan 28, 2010 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

not that I disagree

But Damon’s likely to sign for far less now than Boras allegedly demanded up front. Fangraphs had a piece recently on how he seems to be pretty severely undervalued at this point — I’m actually starting to think a smart Mets front office (I know, oxymoron) would make a run at him.

by anonymous on Jan 28, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

It would be nice

but between paying Frenchy 5 million and the trade for GMjr I doubt bringing in another outfielder for more than like the league minimum isn’t even in their thoughts.

could say he was “just kidding” about the GMJ trade. I’m pretty sure the Angels didn’t call “no backsies”.

by Kevin H on Jan 28, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Matthews should be pretty immaterial to this decision

If you can give Damon ABs that would otherwise go to Francoeur, and maybe make him an occasional part of the 1B and CF platoons as well, his bat is worth significantly more than he’s likely to be paid at this point. I agree that this is unlikely to happen with the current Mets front office — but, considering that the available free-agent pitchers are not much better than those already on the team, it might actually be argued that Damon is the single most cost-effective way of adding wins still available at this point in the offseason.

by anonymous on Jan 28, 2010 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

It should be immaterial

but we’re talking about the Mets, after spending 5 million on Frenchy do you think they’ll spend similar money on Damon and bench Frenchy? Plus the fact they brought in GMjr and resigned Tatis just makes it unlikely they’ll bring in another outfield bench player.

"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

as I said, I don't think they'll do it

But there’s a case to be made that they ought to.

by anonymous on Jan 28, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

I agree they should

My point is more than what’s being paid to Frenchy and bringing in GMjr can’t be considered immaterial when considering what they’ll likely do.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
