I agree
but at the same thing when things are dire enough that we’re getting excited about Tatis being resigned, it’s kind of a bad sign.

It'll work even better if we relegate him to the bullpen.

I like this
It also has the added benefit of getting people in the media all worked up for no reason
I'd rather have him than not have him, I guess.

Double play machine
Look, I loved Tatty from the year before. But last season, he was non-existent when we need him to step up. Yes, he stats look ok but that was only because they got padded after it was clear that the season was all but over.

He basically only had two bad months
May and June, every other month he opsed over .800.

C'mon, be honest
… you were cursing him out just like the rest of us here when – time after time – in clutch situations, Tatis took us out of games by hitting into double plays. Be honest.

No I wouldn't
I saw Ollie pitch to a 3.27 ERA in 2007 and still wanted no part of bringing him back. And I saw Omir hit a walk-off homer and still wanted no part of him being the starting catcher or Castro being traded.

I watched all season
The double plays were brutal, but I wouldn’t say Tatis didn’t play well. He caught a stretch of awful bad luck, but he put up great numbers over the course of the year, plays multiple positions, and gives us a little extra security on a team that can use all the versatile bench pieces it can get.

Maybe I had the misfortune of having my stuff checked by the one security guard that cared, but they caught me sneaking in a can of Arizona iced tea that I had skillfully hidden in my book bag. Shit pissed me off, because I had to chug the entire thing there on the spot (I’m Jewish, so there’s no way in hell I’m letting that $.99 go to waste!), and then I had to pee from like the sixth inning on until I got home like two hours later.

I don't like this move
Tatis’s numbers are skewed immensely by his August and September numbers, when he absolutely tore it up playing meaningless baseball. We caught lightning in a bottle in 2008, he was a GIDP machine in 2009, and now he’s back once again to kill rallies and play bad defense. I like him as a person and he’s fun to root for, but his defense is miserable and he is as streaky as they come with the bat. Pass.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
That's just wrong though
First off, he was 3 runs above average defensively last year.
2nd, as someone has already pointed, 9 of his DPs came from the end of May until the end of June, and he only hit two in the final two months.
3rd, so what if he had numbers during meaningless months? What was he supposed to do, stop trying all together? He still had to hit, and he did
4th, he’s incrediblly versatile in terms of positions he can play.
5th, as great as his 2008 supposedly was, his WAR in was only .1 lower in 2009 (1.6 to 1.5)
Finally, he had an OPS over .800 in 4 of the 6 months so I don’t see how he was “streaky as they come”
It’s not the greatest signing in the world, but it’s a good one.
by Syler on Jan 27, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
Whats hilarious is that if the rest of the team had been good in August and September
and Tatis hit like that and we stumbled into the play-offs somehow people would be calling him clutch and Omar probably would have made it a priority to resign him, or if he didn’t fans would be freaking out.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
He played so many positions
His UZR could have been decent given the cumulative small sample size. We all know that, while useful, defensive metrics aren’t perfect. His OPS+ was 105 last year, down from 123 in 2008 and his OPS was still .777 even with your “4 out of 6 months,” which means it was the fluky fielding numbers that brought his WAR up.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
FWIW
Another defensive evaluation system, Plus/Minus, put Tatis at +10 on the year. (UZR said +4)
In 2008 UZR said -2 and Plus/Minus said -1. He’s probably not as good as his the defensive numbers this year but I think it’s fair to say he’s somewhere around average defensively, with 1B likely his best defensive position.
by James Kannengieser on Jan 27, 2010 7:11 PM EST up reply actions
Tatis is a good player to have on a winning team.
Three like him on the bench and depth will rarely be a problem. Besides, who else is available?
by SeanSchirmer on Jan 27, 2010 7:17 PM EST up reply actions
Ryan Garko
I don’t get the hate. All they need him to do is play first and hit lefties, and he can definitely do that. You know Jerry is going to ask Tatis to do way too much because he is gangsta and diminish his value. Garko wouldn’t come with that string attached.
And James, the point of my argument is that even if his glove is average (and I don’t think it is), the bat isn’t good enough to justify starting/platooning him.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
It's not that there's hate for Garko
it’s that there’s not alot of reasons to think he’s better than Nick Evans could be, considering even with his struggles in the ML level he’s managed to ops. 800 against lefties, and most reports said he’s an above average defender at first.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Looking at Evans practically
The organization is NEVER going to let him play, so any talk about Garko being redundant is rendered moot by our FO’s stupidity. I happen to like Evans, but if he can’t play, we could at least sign someone who can play like him.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
But if they're not going to let Evans play
what makes you think they’re smart enough to value Garko?
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Garko has been worth less than 1 win each of the last two seasons
The only thing he does well is hit lefties.
And that is all the Mets need him to do
There is no other reason to have Garko on the team, which is why he’s worth a one-year deal at $750K. They will ask too much of Tatis, and that will hurt us in the long run.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
It's not much having a completely one dimensional player on your roster though, is it?
I mean Garko plays only an adequate first base, and he’s been absolutely horrendous in the OF in his career
Versatility helps, especially when you have Castillo, GMJ, and Alex Cora on your team
But my point is
Tatis isn’t versatile, and yet the Mets will try to make him appear as such, thus hurting the team.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
Can he play them WELL?
And please, I love sabermetrics as much as the next guy, but don’t give me tiny sample sizes of UZR or +/-. Just watch him run to the ball.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
Can he play them worse
than the current options the mets are likely to look into?
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I would take Randy Winn over Tatis any day
I really deep down just do not want to see anyone from the last few years on the team again. The day we sign Delgado will be the day I spend puking in my bathroom for four hours.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
I agree I would take Winn
but like I said options the mets are likely to look into.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I went through the FA market
And you actually have a point here. I’m open minded. But then I realized the best choice would be for the Mets not to have signed anyone at all and saved the cash, since I know you and I are in agreement that this year is a waste of time.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
Just from watching I think he's good, honestly
That doesn’t really mean anything, the next person could say he sucked and there’s no way to prove otherwise. Some highlights for Fernando though:

Means you do a lot of things at least passably well. If he was excellent at fielding all of those positions, he’d be maybe the world’s finest utility man.

Hard hit ground balls six feet to the right = two run single, the man’s a hero!
Why base your judgement on the fact that Tatis’s groundballs were very unlucky in their direction?

The whole offseason could be salvaged by just signing a defensive 2nd baseman and a compitent pitcher.
I’m not asking too much am I? Hudson and Wang? Too much money? How about a trade then…get us something. Shouldn’t be too much to ask for the GM of arguably the second most valuable franchise in baseball.

Amazing, isn't it?
By snagging Pineiro, Zaun, and Hudson or LaRoche, this suddenly becomes a solid team. There’s a lot less pressure to keep someone like Perez if he isn’t performing in the rotation. If a catcher goes down there’s reasonable depth.

than what we’re paying to Cora, Frenchy and Blanco, and what they offered to Molina.

Hell
they offered 5.5 million to Molina, and are paying Frenchy and Cora about 7 million combined. So that’s 12 million? Randy Winn and Piniero would have only cost 10.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

It's indeed pathetic
We could have immensely improved this team and not have spent a ton of money. Molina, LaRoche, buy-out Louie for a “present value discount,” sign Hudon and a pitcher (Piniero, Marquis, or Garland would have been sufficient), and be done.
But noooooooooooooo, …
"Never throw a slider to The Glider."
- Ed Charles, No. 5
Add in Blanco and the two relievers and you're closing in on $20 million.
That’s Piniero, Zaun, Hudson, LaRoche, and Winn. This wasn’t rocket surgery. What I don’t get is that the Wilpons aren’t completely stupid—even if they got hurt in the financial crisis it’s not like they couldn’t borrow a few million against the Mets for salary. This is a very important year for the franchise. If they put a mediocre team on the field it could damage attendance for years as well as not set them up to compete in 2011.
I suppose what it really comes down to is they simply had no idea what pieces this team needed. It’s sheer ignorance that makes you chase Molina then not give his money to Piniero.

Almost verbatim. Except Cerrone says that Garko is more versatile than Tatis, which made me chuckle a little bit. Should I be worried? Does that mean my assessment of Tatis is wrong?
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
Well
If you’re referring to this post, it’s not Cerrone, but the boy wonder Michael Baron. Without saying anything else, I will say that I frequently disagree with Mr. Baron. Per Baron:
he [Garko] can probably be had for less money than tatis and he is a more versatile player as he can play first base as well as the outfield which provides the depth which cerrone spoke about earlier

He’s played all of 76 innings in the outfield while being a terrible first baseman in his 3000+ innings there.
