Mets Claim LHP Jay Marshall Off Waivers From Athletics
The Mets have claimed submarine lefty Jay Marshall off waivers from Oakland. Marshall is 26-years-old and has been quite good against lefties in the equivalent of 99.1 minor league innings. He's an extreme groundball pitcher, with a career minor league GB:FB ratio of almost 3. His stuff is unspectacular, but he's interesting enough to make this a worthwhile pickup.
You can check out his career numbers at Minor League Splits.

I'd like a Disco for Omar trade, myself.

He reminds me of a left handed Chad Bradford.
He’ll be nice cover to store in Buffalo. Hopefully he jumps in front of Elmer Dessens on the depth chart.

Wow, that's an extreme LOOGY
Those splits are pretty crazy. Righties kill him and lefties can’t touch him.
I like the pick-up. At worst, you stash him in Buffalo and call him up when rosters expand in September. Bring him in to solely face a lefty hitter or two.
That's the ticket. He should never face a righty. Never.
Anyone know why a 26 year old has all of 99 pro innings under his belt?
Jerry'll bring him in to face Matt Diaz
Don’t worry
The Mets lobby Omar for a plan, and his plan, he likes his plan. The problem is that he didn't write his plan down 'cause that makes it paperwork, and that’s false hustle... Know what I’m sayin’?
So the Mets signed Plastic Man?
Matty D eats LHPs for breakfast.
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.
I remember screaming at the TV when he left Feliciano in to face Diaz
It didn’t work out for the Mets if you recall.

Jerry has a plan
and his plan… well y’know
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
What does LOOGY stand for?
Lefty something. And ROOGY is righty something. Thats all I know.
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

From the Baseball Prospectus glossary
“Lefty One Out GuY – a left handed reliever specializing in getting one out, often in game critical situations”
And here I always thought LOOGY was something you coughed up...

Looks like he could be a good lefty specialist in the bigs. AKA Jerry will let him face righties who mash lefties.
Jerry will use him against the righties
and Takahashi against the lefties
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Kent Tekulve (in parallel universe)
minus the 2.85 ERA.
his minor league numbers are nice and all
but in his major league career so far which covers 61 appearances lefties have batted .301 against him.
granted that came in 49.1 ip which isn’t a ton but considering the fact that he is supposedly lacking quite a bit on stuff (see: 83.7 mph avg. fb velo in 2009), it wouldn’t be crazy for minor leaguers to be fooled by his quirky delivery and major leaguers to be completely unfazed by it.
Well...
… it’s 94 PAs. But yeah… he really didn’t miss a lot of bats. Considering how much he seemed to pound the zone (18 walks in those innings), that slow-train FB could be the problem. Can you throw a knuckler sidearm?

It'd be awesome if you can.
I asked a friend of mine that same question once, and that was his opinion. But I’m not so sure; I don’t think the mechanics of the knuckler work if you’re dropping your arm angle. I don’t think you could even get the force necessary to get the ball to home throwing it from a low angle.

Kooky motion.
I’d like to see him get experimental with the facial hair. If you’re going to be a backup LOOGY, it’s kind of a duty to go all Zavada, isn’t it?
For a guy with such radical minors splits, the A’s kinda threw the guy under the bus, didn’t they?

Seems pretty atypical of the A's, too...
