Meet the Mets
The Mets GM search began in earnest yesterday with former Royal GM and current Red Sox Assistant Allard Baird meeting with John Ricco and the rest of the Met contingent. It might all be for naught, as Sandy Alderson remains the favorite to replace Omar Minaya, picking up an endorsement from protege Billy Beane. Still have doubts or questions about Alderson? Well, Craig Calcaterra tries to pre-empt those. All things considered, it's been a very promising offseason so far and it has at least gotten Howard Megdal excited.
Toby Hyde took a look at the minor league first base situation which, thanks to Omar, included Citi-bound utilityman Nick Evans for most of the season.
Adam Rubin does an outstanding job of previewing the Mets Fall League. Highlighting the Met contingent are Brad Holt and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
Citi Bank tugs at the heart strings with their latest commercial.
Around MLB
Bobby Cox walked off the field last night a loser for the last time thanks to a few more Brave errors and a pretty good Giant team. It'll certainly be interesting to see Chipper Jones play for another manager next season. Greg Prince reminisced a little about Cox's career as a Met killer.
Atlanta fans still could not be bothered to watch their team in the playoffs.
Bobby Valentine is back to being the favorite to land the Marlins managerial job.
Derek Jeter has it all: World Series rings, massive multimillion dollar ad deals, a swank apartment (that he may never be able to sell), and now the sexiest woman alive as his fiance.
Another reason to hate the Yankees? How about the utter dismissal of every other team in the league.
Sammy Sosa's corked bat will be put up for auction.
And, finally, I'm a day late on this, but the Simpsons on Sunday night focused on the statistics/traditionalist rivalry in baseball and featured a short guest spot from Bill James. The entire episode is definitely worth your time as is Joe Posnanski's write-up. The best news from the show: Mike Scioscia's radiation poisoning has cleared up.
