Winter League Report - 10/18

With the Arizona Fall League now in full swing it seems a good time to start with the first in a series of fall/winter league updates that will run probably every Minor League Monday or so.  Obviously we'll look at the trials and tribulations of any and all Mets players/prospects that remain active even as the temperature drops up north.  So let's start by taking a look back at the week that was for the Mets contingent of the AFL's Mesa Solar Sox as well as a bumper crop of players starring in the Venezuelan Winter League:

The Captain has looked good so far out in Arizona showing more of the gap power and developing plate discipline that had him in the Double-A All-Star Game this summer.  Unfortunately, he's had a couple days off after taking a bad hop to the nose on Thursday night but on the bright side, with his defense in center under close scrutiny Niuwenhuis nailed a runner at home on Wednesday night.

2B Jordany Valdespin

Possesses major league-caliber tools for sure and if he could only show some polish this month (not just between the lines) there's a real chance that with some in the organization high on him, he'll at least put himself into the discussion for second base at some point in 2011.

Kai hasn't gotten a ton of pt so far but after a huge year for his prospect status, he stands to gain a lot from a solid showing in the AFL. 

RHP Brad Holt

Nobody was a bigger disappointment in the Mets system in 2010 than Holt which is why his strong debut last Tuesday was such a welcome sight.  Despite less-than-impressive reports about his stuff, these are the kind of solid appearances he really needs to get back on track and start rebuilding his tattered prospect stock.

LHP Robert Carson

(Yet to make an appearance)

It'd be nice to see a rebound from his rough debut with Double-A Binghamton but I'm not entirely optimistic the way this league plays to hitters.  But like I said when he was promoted, I still don't feel that this exposure to better competition is a bad thing for him.

RHP Nick Carr

After a second straight year marred by injuries, Carr has come out of the gates strong so far for Mesa.  The hard-throwing righty could really build momentum this October in his transition into full-time relief.

LHP Eric Niesen

Unlike Holt, Niesen was unable to turn the page past a poor 2010 season in his first AFL appearance.  It's been rough going this year for Niesen who started the season in consideration for a spot in the major league 'pen but was ultimately sent down and got clocked in the head soon after, missing a month with a concussion and upon returning messed with his delivery to less than ideal results.  He's always had the stuff to profile as a dominant major league LOOGY but for that to happen he needs to rediscover the decent command that he completely lost in 2010.

With Buffalo's hitting coach (Jack Voigt) working for the Caribes in the same capacity, Big Hess got the invite.  Damn this guy loves baseball.

Still healing up from crushing that homer seconds after crushing that bone in his foot.  That gets my vote for 'Grissioniest Play of 2010'.

 

Prospects (and some tweeners)

SS Wilmer Flores

After getting off to a quick start, Flores strained his left calf last Thursday.  Doesn't sound like a terribly serious injury but it figures to keep him out for a couple weeks or so.  When he gets back it looks like he's going to be playing short nearly every day with a pretty poor selection of middle infielders on the Margarita roster.  More importantly, facing off against veteran pitching will be a good test for the nineteen year old.

3B Eric Campbell

The 2010 breakout slugger is picking up right where he left off before he went down with a broken finger back in August.  Also, he's playing for our old buddy Julio Franco (and I don't mean we've known him for a long time).

With a strong showing against some older competition, Alvarez could put himself firmly into the mix for a bullpen spot with the big club come 2011.

Twenty year old former starter, pitched this year mostly out of the K-Mets 'pen to mediocre results (5.29 ERA) but the 12.4 K/9 from a lefty makes him worth watching.

This twenty two year old, 6'3" converted outfielder posted a 1.93 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in twenty relief appearances in Savannah in 2010 in just his second year as a pro pitcher.  Could become an interesting relief prospect fast.

C Salomon Manriquez

Veteran minor league catcher known for his power and solid D batted .289 with four homers in thirty two games with the B-Mets in 2010.
