Mets Community Prospect List 2010: #20
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Amazin' Avenue Mets Community Prospect List. Every poll will include eight candidates for the next spot on the list, as well as a separate group of testers. Testers will be rotated into polls with each new installation, replacing each poll's winner and any name that's not getting votes. After a few rounds, if a candidate on the ballot receives a decidedly low vote total , they'll be replaced on the ballot by a tester.
After the poll, Matt den Dekker has been chosen as the #19 prospect in the Mets' system with 59% of the run-off votes. To replace him, Akeel Morris has been added to the ballot. To recap:

I don't know anything about Morris or Torvar but I found this from a google search
on Morris if anyone’s curious.
Akeel Morris:
9-28-10 from goldstein – There’s something there, and a lot of people think he would have went higher in the draft had he gotten more exposure. He’s sitting in the low 90s already and flashing considerably more at times, and the curve and change both show potential. Combine that with the ability to throw strikes and he’s an outstanding sleeper.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
At this point, it's gotta be Marte

That's what I was saying when Lutz was finally voted. We all have our quibbles with the list.
There was almost a witch hunt when Aderlin was chosen haha.
Yea that was kind of amusing
Although I think it is worth pointing out that for most of these guys its not that we think they shouldn’t be on the list more that they shouldn’t be in the position they are in. Pretty much the only one I wouldn’t have on my list is Allen, and that is tempered by the fact that he was pitching with a cracked spine all year

yeah but IMO Lutz and Aderlin is pretty easily arguable
though I think the witch hunt was more 1. how did Aderlin win over Puello rather than Lutz where Puello has more performance with the bat and way more tools and 2. how aderlin came out of no where from 3rd place.
I just don’t see how any of these guys, some of whom are borderline non prospects, like Ratliff and Cohoon, or the love for Armando Rodriguez a 22 year old in A ball, over someone with legitimate tools and projection like Marte.

It also relates to the lack of publicity/information/scouting reports of some prospects.
Age/level/offensive production is not enough. On most of them, we have a hard time getting a scouting report on their defense, tools and improvement over the months.
And I was saying that Lutz is higher on my list, cause he is teh awesomeness. I couldn’t care less where Aderlin is ranked (oops sorry lol).
age level offensive production isn't everything
but when you’re talking about 22-23 year olds in A+ and A- about 95 times out of 100 that’s all you need to know.

I voted for den Dekker because of the scouting reports on his defense.
When I have scouting info on defense, I’ll strongly take those into consideration.
I wonder if age is accounted properly (if it’s not too discounted for guys who are older than average and too valued for those who are younger). This goes along with the policy to aggressively promote the prospects. Maybe they are not ready yet, but they are promoted anyway and this might hinder their development.
I'd agree that its probably overvalued for guys who are younger and not
producing, but to me when you’re talking about a 19 year old who is hitting A ball pitching, and who’s walking at above average rates, that’s producing. I’m more indifferent to Den Dekker I just don’t get the love for guys like Cohoon, Rodriguez and Ratliff.

I think your're under-rating Ratliff a bit
Cohoon, Rodriguez, Satin, and Gronauer are guys who probably shouldn’t be top 20. Ratliff though, while he probably shouldn’t be ahead of Marte, he is one of the higher ceiling bats in the system.

I don't think that Ratliff has that high of a ceiling
Besides his contact issues, he doesn’t have great bat speed.
Sandy Alderson for Mets GM
R.A. Dickey for Governor!
Good bat speed though
His bat speed isn’t as good as Duda, but it’s comparable to a guy like Ike Davis, and better than lots of guys like Evans, Campbell, Den Dekker, etc.
I’m not saying he’s going to be a star, but he’s got a decent shot as a regular. Basically, at least average bat speed, plus power, at least average speed, good arm, average plate discipline. If a guy can play a solid RF, with average hitting ability, average discipline, with plus power and a good arm, that’s a pretty good prospect.
Not that different from the guy we drafted:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2008/reports.jsp?content=ratliff
agreed
i’ve made no secret that i feel ratliff’s k:bb issues get way overblown. there is more to a prospect than plate discipline; take his power, which is very real, almost certainly the best in the system (aside from aderlin) and the fact that he batted .333 against lefties in AA this year, which is impressive.
his ceiling isn’t a superstar by any means (mainly because of those k’s and the fact that he isn’t a major league center fielder) but the kid just fell about 15 games short of leading the EL in OPS. he is definitely not a non-prospect.

Eric Goedell?
Jason Churchill:
Goeddel was the best pitcher on the Bruins roster when they came to Seattle last spring, including Gerrit Cole. He was nails, though inconsistent at the time. He flashed No. 2 or 3 starter stuff late and the Mets are giddy they got him signed.
I didn't have as many people asking for him as any of the others; sorry.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
no problem
it doesn’t mean i’m right, just a difference between myself and the community

Yeah, I wasn't calling for him either
I knew he was supposed to be pretty good, but I was just surprised by the Churchill comment suggesting he was better than Gerrit Cole at one point. I know he means before this season, and Cole had a pretty big year, but Cole was a first round pick out of HS, and was really nearly as good last year as a freshman, just for only 14 starts. Cole is supposed to be in the mix at the very top of next years draft.
