I tried to get FIOS a few months back

I like this part:
In an earlier Bats post, we decided to use our factors to analyze the early rounds of the baseball playoffs. This experiment resulted in a lackluster 1-3 record in the first round. The factors would have gone 0-2 in the League Championship Series, a testament to how surprising this year’s baseball playoffs have been. But these championship characteristics were identified by looking at World Series results, so let’s review the factors again in analyzing the World Series matchup between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers.
“Our process has been right 1 time out of 6. So let’s use it again!”

That's been a criticism
of Girardi. “It’s good to look at the numbers, but sometimes you need to feel the heartbeat of the game.” – Marc Malusis.
Of course, if they were gonna bash Girardi on using stats, they should’ve gotten him on starting Hughes in Arlington due to success in 2008 against a different Rangers lineup.

What in the hell?
Leadership on the field has proven statistically significant in its relationship to winning the big game across all sports we have studied. In baseball, top starting pitchers are a key factor related to leadership – and are a good indicator of success in a playoff series. In particular, the finalist with the better top of the rotation — measured in total wins by its top two pitchers — has won 68 percent of the World Series over the past 20 years. The slight edge goes to San Francisco, whose top two starting pitchers, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, had 29 wins to 28 by Texas’s top two.
I think John Harper is gonna use this in his next column.

On October 4, 1998, Randy Johnson pitched 6 innings and struck out 8, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) , but took the loss, to:
STERLING HITCHCOCK, who also went 6 innings, striking out 11 and walking none, getting the win and advancing the Padres to the NLCS.

I used the BB-Ref play index for the 10 K/0 BB thing, but my subscription ran out so it doesn’t give me names, just the dates. I went back to the ‘98 postseason, saw the Sox were in it, so I checked them, saw that it wasn’t Pedro, then saw that the Astros and Padres played on October 4., and Randy Johnson was the starter. There was an interesting story about the 69 Mets in the Westies book.
Apparently when the Mets won the WS, it bankrupted a huge number of bookies, one of them being Mickey Spillane, who used to run the Irish West Side gang. While he was reeling from the loss, he was killed by Jimmy Coonan’s gang and the Westies were born.

Every time they reference the Yankees, drink!
I’ve noticed they’ve added qualifiers when talking about postseason records by Texas or San Francisco. Funny, I’ve never heard them do that when talking about Andy Pettitte’s postseason wins….

my "favorite"
is ‘05 – Christy Mathewson’s 3 CG shutouts in 5 days.
My family used to vacation up in PA every summer at this lakeside resort, and there was always the same group of people (more or less) and one of the guys was a baseball historian whose biggest claim to fame was being one of the leaders for the push to get Bobby Doerr into the Hall of Fame (I wish I could remember the guys name, but last time I saw him I was like 14 and just don’t remember). Anyway, he used to tell me all these awesome stories about baseball, and one time he actually took me to this field that is supposedly where Mathewson learned how to pitch, so I’ve always been a big fan of any Mathewson stories

Detroit is terrible
I love basketball, but I find the NBA regular season tedious, so I usually only really pay attention during the playoffs. Last year I went to a Wizards-Pistons game, thinking “at least the Pistons are pretty good.” They were ATROCIOUS, even worse than the Wizards. I had no idea…
2009 Did Not Happen
nope, DC
I’m a Knicks fan, but of all my favorite teams they’re lowest on the totem pole. Really, in the NBA, I root for players – I loved Dwyane Wade and therefore rooted for the Heat up until, well, now. Now I hate them.
Actually, I’m considering jumping on the Wizards bandwagon – I really like John Wall, and I should probably root for one of the local teams at least, since I’m probably gonna be here for a while. I tried out the Caps, but my Islanders loyalties are too strong.

I don't know why the Nets are so bad
they have a good point guard and a good big man. Those are the two hardest positions to fill.
2009 Did Not Happen
cause their good point guard isn't good
he’s a low percentage volume scorer who plays less defense than I could on an NBA court. And their big man is a so-so rebounder who also plays no defense. Brook can get better but Harris is a lost cause.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
People say that the baseball regular season is meaningless
which is just bull, but my God, they don’t even try to hide it in the NBA. How that sport is as popular as it is is beyond me
That I get, but it's totally predictable.
You can probably forecast the entire playoffs right now and be pretty close to right
I love this
The pathetic Giants offense is knocking him around when the Yankees couldn’t touch him.

it pisses me off that they left
because both were way better run franchises than the Mets…I mean, look how much we fawn over Tom Seaver. We could have had Willie Mays (the good years), Willie McCovey, Mel Ott, and, of course, Barry Bonds.
Or, that not good enough, we could have had Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Don Sutton, and, of course, Mike Piazza.

age?
I’d prefer to see Tony Bennett singing the national anthem, but that’s just me. Oh wait, no it’s not, everyone else is tired of God Bless America.

why do announcers contiue to talk about team history?
In the last 10 years:
The Yankees had Aura and Mystique until they didn’t.
The Angels, Red Sox, and White Sox were cursed until they weren’t.
The Rays were terrible until they weren’t.
etc. etc.
So why do we care what the 1996 Rangers did against the Yankees in the playoffs?

they have nothing else insightful to say
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
I would always rather see a pitcher's duel.
Unless, of course, it’s the Mets beating up on some staff’s ace.

LOL, that commercial.
‘That first Chevy. Yeah, it gets under your skin’.
I’m gonna age myself here….my first car as a 17 year old was a Chevy Vega. Zero to 60 in 15 minutes.

6 doubles tonight for San Fran
Just imagine how many they could have hit if their offense didn’t suck.

Can we hurry up and finish the bottom of the 8th so Texas can go down meekly in the 9th?

I'm still here
I guess it’s quiet because the game is one-sided, and nobody is intensely into seeing one of these teams lose.

can pitch effectively tonight?

Well
certainly wasn’t as predicted.
Giants take the first game. I’d say the odds weren’t totally stacked against them doing this but certainly not with 11 runs.
