Sandy Alderson Introductory Press Conference Live Blog
I'll be posting updates as the press conference progresses. Hit the refresh button! Listen in here.
- 2:12--Alderson makes joke about his role in Moneyball. Values uniformity in coaching philosophies throughout organization.
- 2:14--Says manager needs to be intellectual, intuitive, and emotional. Downplays the idea of him meddling with manager's decisions.
- 2:16--Characterizes his freedom with ownership relative to his ability to articulate justifications to the owners.
- 2:17--Isn't going to write off an asset (release Oliver) solely because of public opinion.
- 2:19--"The mathematics don't lie."
- 2:19--Re: drop in major league homeruns making his philosophies obsolete: "Just because there's less gold, doesn't make it less valuable."
- 2:21--Characterizes Mets farm system as middle of the pack. "In our situation, we should never be middle of the pack."
- 2:23--Jeff Wilpon's expression never changes.
- 2:23--Alderson deflects a question about his age with a deftness reminiscent of Reagan's "I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign."
- 2:27--Alderson pwns Marty Noble. "I'm focused on 2011 and not on things that are, at this point I hope, historical in nature."
- 2:28--"I have tremendous interest in the internationalization of the game." Talking about extending the Mets brand into China, elsewhere.
- 2:30--Deflects question about changing Citi's dimensions by pointing out his experience with PETCO.
- 2:31--Reads from his resume: "Friendly but professional," "Fun work environment," "Analytical but innovative," "Bold but alert to risk and probabilities." If anyone else did this, it would seem vain.
- 2:34--"If we had 200(?) more at bats from Jason Bay, we would have been competitive."
- 2:35--Q&A ends. Likely terrible interview with Kevin Burkhardt coming.
Burkhardt post-presser interview:
- Re: complementary major leaguers: "You never know who's going to turn out to be great."
- "Got to put back-to-back drafts together." Doesn't he know about Eddie Kunz??
- 2012--Commitments drop from 130-40 million to 60 millon. Good year to be aggressive.
- Burkhardt is a mong.
- Re: building for Citi Field: "You can overcorrect." "The infield doesn't change."

What's that about?
age really matters
Rob Dibble would be a better GM than Frank Cashen because Dibble is 42 years younger

Yeah, but they ain't two different countries
They’re two governments competing— they both claim all the same land: China claims Taiwan, and Taiwan claims China. They both call themselves China. They speak Chinese in both places.

I think that makes them two seperate countries
with a claim on the same land. To be a country you have to belong to one sovereign state, two sovereign states on the same land mass constitutes two separate countries.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
they are two separate aren't sharing the same land at all
Taiwan has what is called “de facto” sovereignty. The PRC government or any mainland govt really has nothing to do with the day to day running of Taiwan and hasn’t for 60 years.
The argument is over “de jure” sovereignty, which the PRC has a problem with, and by extension, has been able to successfully persuade the international community in general not to recognize ROC sovereignty, and exclude the ROC govt. from many orgs in international society, etc.
If they looked into it, most American’s, being the ardent fans of self-determination that we are, would probably recognize Taiwan’s right to self-determination, as Congress has traditionally done (admittedly with the help of some serious $$ and lobbying on the part of the ROC esp during the 1980s). Geopolitics and Chinese/ PRC power are what keep this dispute from resolution in the final analysis.

Technically, no
The United Nations recognizes the PRC as being “China”, hence them having the seat of China. The RoC, Taiwan, does not have a seat in any UN bodies (mostly because of pressure exerted by the PRC, which, for obvious political reasons, wants to deny Taiwan any independent political opinions, or the name “China”.

In effect, they are two seperate countries.
Two different governments, each with a different outlooks on how to govern. Ethnically and culturally, the people of Taiwan and mainland China are, more or less the same, with 98% of Taiwan being of ethnic Han ancestry.

Most people don’t get into the intricacies of international diplomacy, like we do at AA. Someone who is Chinese can be from either Taiwan, or the PRC. They both
claim to rule all of China, mainland and Formosa. Reality gets in the way.
Haven’t followed this recently, but isn’t the U.S. pledged to go to war if People’s Republic attacks Taiwan?
no they don't both claim all of China anymore
ROC has not had since. The Jiang regime (Nationalists) did aim to reunify under KMT auspices, but that is history.
Maybe people are thinking of how, under the “one china principle” that both sides agreed to in the early 90s in their diplomatic wranglings, both would commit to unification. But the common def. of one china was so underspecified and ambiguous under a 1992 agreement that it only enabled negotiations to continue really.
Lee Teng hui, ROC president in the late 80s, did promote shared sovereignty for a while, but he increasingly undermined what China (PRC) saw as “one china” principles. In 1991 he designated cross-strait relations as “state to state,” which really pissed off the PRC.
Then as the DPP grew more powerful, and the KMT was displaced, the goal of retaking the mainland or having reunification under the ROC faded. Not to mention the PRC’s growing in power, being in nuclear club etc.
The ROC tries every year since the early 90s to get into the UN, WHO, etc. under its own auspices, but China has successfully blocked such maneuvers.
Very very recently there have been some reports that under TW’s current KMT president Ma Ying jiu, some members of the KMT regime are re-claiming ROC dominion over the entirety of China based on the constitution. But I’d write that off to diplomatic maneuvering over some highly valued maritime real-estate for now.

Taiwan hasn't really claimed the name "China" since democratization
In fact since Chen Shui Bian’s presidency, the ROC has increasingly identified itself as Taiwan. The KMT, more pro-unification than the DPP, now holds the presidency, but that hasn’t really changed the fact that 75-80% Taiwanese consistently poll for maintaining the status quo (de facto independence). PRC propaganda notwithstanding, Taiwan is not part of China in any way, just as it is not part of Japan or Holland, and has many different ethnic groups among them ethnically Han. The rest, as you point out, is a common misconception underwritten by the PRC’s asymmetrical advantage in power and its position in post WWII international organizations.

The formal name of Taiwan
is the Republic of China. Taiwan identifying itself as a “Republic of Taiwan” is what causes a lot of the friction between it and the PRC, since the PRC considered Taiwan it’s own terrestrial holdings, and a formal name change to the Republic of Taiwan would, in effect, amount to separatism from the “motherland”- and we all know how the PRC feels about that, most specifically vis-a-vis Tibet (and, to a lesser degree, Inner Mongolia and even lesser, Hong Kong).

Well the reason China is so behind than Japan and Taiwan is that
Baseball was being played in Japan since the beginning of the 20th century, and the Japanese introduced baseball to Taiwan which was a colony of their during the 1st half of the 20th century. The Chinese baseball league was formed in 2002. Obviously there’s no baseball tradition and you are not going to have talented kids going into baseball and become stars overnight.

If you intend to try and trade him,
why would you let everyone know you’ll definitely cut him? Then they know they just have to wait, and they can pick him up for nothing.
True, it is unlikely he’ll find takers for Ollie anyway, but it would be a bad idea for Alderson to just assume he is of no trade value whatsoever without even trying. Just because Omar couldn’t trade away of Ollie doesn’t mean he can’t.
I don't disagree...if LOLie can actually pitch and be an "asset"
well, I guess there’s nowhere to go but up(for LOLie and the Mets)…right? I just hope they can keep him in AAA when he starts stinking. and one more year of Slappy isn’t so bad, I guess…

I found his Gold Standard analogy interesting
He said " just because there is less gold doesn’t make it less valuable that when gold is scare" and this was said in relation to OPS, Sugging and HRs. If there is less gold, it will be more valuable
He also highlighted the importance of OPS in Rubin’s question.
I have a feeling that he is going to go ball out for some power.

My favorite is the hypocrisy of needing to sell tickets
On the one hand, fans kill the Mets for making moves based on winning the back page or selling tickets. But now these morons complain that he won’t hire a manager for the purpose of selling tickets.

Basically they want to hear that he's going to package Castillo and Perez
For Albert Puiols, and then hire Wally Backman as manager, who will then proceed to go out and do magic tricks during the 7th inning stretch with Cliff Lee, who was just signed to a 6-year, $160 million deal.
Logic ain’t an asset to WFAN callers.
The "excite the fanbase"

Left field, with that glass stuff, it’s a restaurant, or some high scale food eatery. Right field, behind the wall, I think it’s just sidewalk and passageway. Never actually been to either side.

This is how I got my Dad on board with Sandy Alderson
I told him that the successful teams of the last decade all had these “saber” guys in place and he was sold on Alderson.
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
Alderson looked pretty uncomfortable in the beginning of his press conference
but he was impressive on the whole. He put emphasis on all the important things for a big market team—depth, allocation of resources, development and analysis. In contrast, Omar Minaya merely preached a return to respectability. Alderson considers all sides of the equation.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.

does anyone know if it’s possible our revenue dipped enough the last two years that we won’t have to participate in revenue sharing? It was just something I was wondering this morning, in light of all the stories about massive attendance drop offs.

by Coolpapabell on Oct 29, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Money paid as luxury tax is not distributed to small market teams.
50% of the remaining money is used to fund player benefits, 25% is used to fund baseball programs in developing countries with no high-school baseball, and 25% is put into the Industry Growth Fund (IGF)
I'm guessing it's pretty much impossible.
Even though the attendance dropped, the NY revenues compared to other markets should be in a whole different level.

Does someone
have an ice pick available, cause I might need it after seeing this on Metsmerized:
However, Alderson will not use sabermetrics as the end-all to running an organization. He will use every tool in his arsenal to build a winner and that includes using his own instincts and scouting reports as well. He will consider things like character because he himself is a man of integrity. This is what he’s done his entire career, and he’s not suddenly going to stop now.
So I urge my sabermetricaly inclined friends, to take a deep breath and stop fantasizing about some Cecil B. DeMille epic where Alderson will raise his mighty staff, part the Hudson River, and lead the Mets into the promised land where they can worship Bill James at the foot of Mount Saber.
It ain’t happening…

The thing that kills me
Is that they don’t understand (for the most part) that using sabermetrics is just part of the bigger picture. It’s not all about saber or just all about ‘traditional’ stats…it’s about having a complete picture drawn on a player.
Perfect example of this would be signing a guy for 2 yrs 20 mil because he is a very good player. An added bonus to this would be if this guy was good with the media, got his uniform dirty and did absolutely everything the organization asked him to do.
Anyway, just my two cents.

But your name is "Gland".
Why should we trust you?
So Alderson
was on Francesa & Kay & ran circles around both of them. I’ll try to find the links to both interviews.
What's that about?
Here you go
I find it hard to believe
that some writers and fans think Alderson’s idea of a manager’s role is off base. An organization spends millions of dollars and thousands of man hours building an organization, developing players, coinstructing a long term plan, and then what: they turn it over to a manager to do as he pleases, as his gut tells him? The manager should be a foil for the GM and the organizational philosophy as a whole. If he can think on his feet, adapt and make good moves in-game, fine. But he should never be left only to his own devices. I like this Alderson guy. It is nice to hear English spoken at a news conference for a change. plus, Sandy is capable of answering two-pronged and three-pronged questions. We all know that the big O was a single pronger..

"We all know that the big O was a single pronger"
may have to become my new screenname.
He's saying the right thing about not punting 2011.
And, ‘if we had gotten 800 ABs out of Jason Bay… and others, we’d have been competitive.’
That strikes me as hyperbole, in that if you give the 2010 Mets 800 PAs from Albert Pujols instead of from the replacement level players they kept sending out there the team wouldn’t have cracked 90 wins, and 200 PAs more from Bay, and 600 from Beltran in one of his better years would have gotten the 2010 Mets to all of 85 wins. I’m assuming part of the sense of that is the understanding that you don’t always need superstars, and that a lot can be accomplished simply by avoiding giving so many At Bats to replacement level players.
If the 2011 Mets get 6 months of Beltran like the September 2010 Beltran
we’ll be a much better team. I wish that I knew how much WAR Beltran put up that month, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was at, or over 1. If Jason Bay puts up a 4 WAR season, we’re chasing a wild card.
Then we turn the conversation to the pitching rotation and it gets depressing.
The Mets GM is Sandy Alderson: A Dynasty is Born
R.A. Dickey for Governor!
I can't find WAR, but I have...some other stuff!
Carlos Beltran, September/October 2010
OPS: .967
BABIP: .328
wRC: 16.3
wRAA: 6.5
wOBA: .417
wRC+: 167
I’ll keep looking and see if I can find month-by-month WAR splits anywhere.
Let's never bunt again.

you don't need the WAR split
wRAA isn’t exactly equal to batting WAR but it’s close enough. He would have been worth .about .85 WAR with the bat…considering he was worth .9 the whole season that’s pretty substantial.
