According to a press release that has since been retweeted by the huddled masses, Omar Minaya has been "relieved of his duties" as Mets General Manager and Jerry Manuel, for whom the Mets have a team option to retain for 2011, will not be brought back. John Ricco will serve as interim GM until someone is appointed to that position full time.
"We are extremely disappointed in this year's results and the failures of the past four seasons," said Jeff Wilpon, Mets Chief Operating Officer. "We need to hire a new General Manager with a fresh perspective who will transform this club into a winner that we want and our fans deserve.
"We appreciate all that Omar and Jerry have done for the Organization and thank them for their time and effort," Wilpon said. "Changes like these are never easy, especially when you are dealing with people you like and respect."
It appears as if Omar Minaya will stay on with the organization in some capacity, as he is set to earn around $1 million annually for the next two years under his current contract.
There will be a press conference from Citi Field at 1:30pm.
