Mets Dump Omar Minaya And Jerry Manuel
According to a press release that has since been retweeted by the huddled masses, Omar Minaya has been "relieved of his duties" as Mets General Manager and Jerry Manuel, for whom the Mets have a team option to retain for 2011, will not be brought back. John Ricco will serve as interim GM until someone is appointed to that position full time.
"We are extremely disappointed in this year's results and the failures of the past four seasons," said Jeff Wilpon, Mets Chief Operating Officer. "We need to hire a new General Manager with a fresh perspective who will transform this club into a winner that we want and our fans deserve.
"We appreciate all that Omar and Jerry have done for the Organization and thank them for their time and effort," Wilpon said. "Changes like these are never easy, especially when you are dealing with people you like and respect."
It appears as if Omar Minaya will stay on with the organization in some capacity, as he is set to earn around $1 million annually for the next two years under his current contract.
There will be a press conference from Citi Field at 1:30pm.

You will have full autonomy. Except for the fact that you’ll need to keep your predecessor around.

The crowing about injuring players
is crass.* If you were on an NFL field for 3 minutes, you’d be carried off in the belly of a wet-vac.
*unless it’s Shane Victorino.
to turn this back toward the mets
i have faith he will get his via super pelf next season.
I hate Philadelphia so much.
But they're not on an NFL field
NFL players are, and those players are fully aware of the risks they take when they enter the field of play. Sucks that guys get hurt, I honestly wish it would never happen, but you reap what you sow.

It's called perspective
No problem saying that Jay Cutler suck ballzz, but the bloodlust needs to be tempered with human empathy, is all.
Speaking of Omar, fuck him.

I wish we still put people in the ring with lions and bears. At least NFL guys choose to be there, they’re not slaves being forced to do it.
Human empathy is overrated.

by MookieTheCat on Oct 4, 2010 12:36 PM EDT reply actions 4 recs
Even though I liked both Omar and Jerry, I can understand getting rid of Omar, although no GM will ever have full power with Jeff as owner(why and how did Fred ever turn it over to him, anyway?). However, I disagree with getting rid of Jerry. Say what you want about his in-game managing skills, but this team played hard for him. There were several games where they fell behind early, and came back, win or lose. Plus, as Jerry said with Francesa in his last weekly spot last Wednesday(which i’m sure not many of you heard), he never had a completely healthy team to work with either of his 2 full years as manager(which Francesa agreed with him on). He also said that they could have made the playoffs with a completely healthy team, plus sprinkle in a Gee, Duda, etc.
bones_boy, to insult a classy like Jerry by putting that filth up is just low on your part.
Jerry was a douche bag, piece of shit, son of a bitch.
And that’s not even getting into his poor managerial skills.

Francesa is the only guy around who knows less than Jerry. Agree that he didn’t have the best tools to work with, but his turrbile decision-making and penchant for throwing players under the bus, and for making constant excuses…Yeah, he should be gone, nice guy or not.

A nice guy would have taken his share of blame, and maybe worked to be better. Don’t bring up the last game of the season. At that point, nothing Perez did, good or bad, would have made a difference with anybody.
It was a way of humiliating a guy who could not pitch, and hadn't pitched in a month...
When Misch was available. As much as I don’t want to feel bad for Ollie, that was a low move by Jerry, and it typified the way he manages his people: with no thought given to consequence beyond how to screw up the current inning.
Is this trolling? It smells like trolling. It feels like trolling. It reads like trolling.
Jerry as a fine, merely misunderstood human being? Jerry, who troubled to give Josh Thole the back of his hand on Jerry’s way out the door? Jerry, who used his clout to fuck with Mejia’s career? Who managed to manage the last few games such that the best he could think of to do was put Oliver Perez into the last game of the season?

by blueandorange4life on Oct 4, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
How valuable is Posey really expected to be
Because I’ve always heard him projected to be a 3-4 WAR player, which isn’t really enough of an improvement over Thole and some FA catcher to make the swap make since. At least for Reyes since we have no real short stop options.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
Posey was 3.9 WAR in 108 games, which projects to 4.7 WAR over 130 games
Anyway, I think that you do think about it, but not necessarily pull the trigger. Lets face it. High WAR catchers are more difficult to find than high WAR third baseman.
Sandy Alderson for GM!
R.A. Dickey for Governor!
that's not really true
that’s kind of the point of how war is calculated, so the distribution of high WAR catchers is equal to the distribution of high WAR whatever else.
And Thole would come out to about 2.7 WAR over the same PA’s as Posey had, 443, so you’re still only getting about a 1 WAR upgrade which is in no way worth it.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
Why don't we get
a guy who can motivate his players AND make good in-game decisions. Is that too much to ask?
Oh, and Luis Castillo would like a word with you about motivation. Or at least, he’ll get to it at some point.

In lobby for Josh Byrnes/Chip Hale as Mets 2011 GM/Manager.
Great news, but someone needs to inform the Wilpons...
There are brilliant baseball minds from other organizations or currently out of baseball that can save the Mets. Fresh blood is needed here.
Go get a GM with some sort of knowledge about sabermetrics and the economics of baseball, instead of a glorified scout like Omar that has no clue how to bargain and thinks WAR is good for absolutely nothing (say it again! HUA!)
And please, for the love of God – hire someone from outside the organization as the manager of this team. No more remnants of 2007 to 2010, please.

That’s how his name is supposed to be pronounced. That’s how Spanish works. Accent mark over the “a” means the emphasis is on the last syllable, and all a’s in Spanish are pronounced the same (like in “adiós”).
There are many things about ESPN to complain about, but Jon Miller’s pronunciation of Spanish names is not one of them.

now is the time for forgiveness. i assume that
poems, term papers, community college master’s theses will address what I am about to say in due time. But I can reach no other conclusion that Jerry’s decision to put LOLlie in his last game, “for the loss,” was a direct and ballsy statement to his bosses, the media, fans and history books: “hey look at Omar.”
To further state the delicious obvious, LOLlie is the perfect symbol of so many Met themes:
Once was young with great promise
Signed big contract and suddenly lost all indications of talent
Has problems focusing on the field
etc.
In other words, Jerry went out with a bang, not a whimper, and I’ve got to hand it to him. It was hilarious and will be a great memory. Thank you Jerry. May you laugh all the way to the gangsta home for retired chuckleheads.
