With the AFL in it's final week, let's take another look at how some of the most intereresting Mets names playing in the warmer weather have fared since we last checked:
CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
MSS | AFL | .272 | 22 | 81 | 13 | 22 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 12 | 33 | 9 | 23 | 1 | 2 | .352 | .407 | .759 |
Another OK week for The Captain though he did finally show off that power/speed combo with his first homer and his first steal of the fall season.
2B Jordany Valdespin (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
MSS | AFL | .355 | 19 | 76 | 19 | 27 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 11 | 35 | 4 | 12 | 7 | 0 | .388 | .461 | .848 |
Unfortunately, Valdespin left last Monday's game with a strained muscle in his forearm, ending his AFL season. He ended his campaign on a hot streak, batting .395 over his last ten games.
C Kai Gronauer (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
MSS | AFL | .205 | 11 | 39 | 3 | 8 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 7 | 12 | 4 | 5 | 0 | 0 | .279 | .308 | .587 |
Kai seems to be getting used to the irregular playing time (which has included some time at DH of late) as he's now hit in five of his last six games, including 6 for his last 16.
1B Josh Satin (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
MSS | AFL | .417 | 10 | 36 | 4 | 15 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 6 | 20 | 5 | 12 | 0 | 0 | .500 | .556 | 1.056 |
With Valdespin out of commission, Satin was pulled off of the taxi squad and is now seeing action at second base nearly ever day. And he deserved it considering the kid has gone hitless just once so far out in AZ and knocked his first homer this week. Satin can also help himself out with a solid showing back at second.
RHP Brad Holt (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
MSS | AFL | 2 | 1 | 2.92 | 5 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 12.1 | 10 | 7 | 4 | 0 | 9 | 13 | 0.64 | .222 |
Holt has not made an appearance since Nov. 3rd and considering he was pulled from the Rising Stars game last week I think we can assume there's an injury here.
LHP Robert Carson (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
MSS | AFL | 1 | 1 | 7.98 | 5 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 14.2 | 23 | 13 | 13 | 1 | 3 | 11 | 1.64 | .365 |
Hattiesburg's less famous son made likely his last couple appearances out in AZ this fall and completed his roller coaster campaign with one five-run, three inning disaster and a solid, three inning, one-earned start. Carson's earned run totals in his five appearances (in order): 0, 6, 1, 5, 1. Though he pitched to solid results in his last start, Carson still only threw 38 of 66 pitches for strikes last Saturday including one wild pitch. However, he was throwing more sliders/changups than in previous outings and as before was working in the low 90's with his fb; he also picked off a runner at first.
RHP Nick Carr (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
MSS | AFL | 0 | 1 | 5.65 | 9 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 14.1 | 15 | 11 | 9 | 1 | 11 | 9 | 0.55 | .254 |
It was feast or famine once again for Carr as he had one dominant outing where he struck out three men followed by a disaster where he allowed three runs on two hits and two walks. We know he's got the arm strength but some consistency/command would be nice; even in the good game he threw only 16 of 29 pitches for strikes.
LHP Eric Niesen (AFL - Mesa)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
MSS | AFL | 1 | 0 | 6.10 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 10.1 | 17 | 11 | 7 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 0.92 | .333 |
So much for righting the ship; in Niesen's appearance on Monday he too allowed three runs on a walk and three hits (including a home run) in 2/3 of an inning. I don't know what's been more alarming this year, the disappearance of his command or the regression of his stuff.
3B Eric Campbell (VWL - Anzoategui)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
ORI | VWL | .210 | 25 | 81 | 8 | 17 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 23 | 17 | 21 | 0 | 0 | .354 | .284 | .637 |
Campbell is still looking pretty cold right now as he had just one more hit in three games this week. He's batting .138 over his last ten, though to his credit he does have eight walks (versus seven strikeouts) over that span.
RHP Manny Alvarez (VWL - Magallanes)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
MAG | VWL | 0 | 0 | 2.70 | 9 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 13.1 | 13 | 5 | 4 | 0 | 4 | 9 | 0.41 | .255 |
In his only appearance this week Alvarez gave up another run. After a hot start he has now allowed a run in three of his last four appearances.
RHP Jose De La Torre (PWL - Caguas)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
CAG | PWL | 0 | 0 | 3.24 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 8.1 | 6 | 4 | 3 | 0 | 4 | 7 | 2.00 | .214 |
Like Alvarez, De La Torre has been shaky of late and floundered in his only chance this week, a 1.2 IP, 2-run appearance.
2B Daniel Murphy (DWL - Aguila)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
AGU | DWL | .297 | 20 | 74 | 5 | 22 | 5 | 1 | 2 | 12 | 35 | 7 | 6 | 4 | 0 | .349 | .473 | .822 |
Murph has looked good offensively so far down in th DR, including another homer on Friday night and his fourth stolen base overall, matching his total in 155 game in '09. He is also riding a seven-game hit streak. No word though on how he's looked defensively.
LHP Raul Valdes (DWL - Este)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |
TOR | DWL | 1 | 1 | 3.86 | 4 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 16.1 | 19 | 7 | 7 | 4 | 5 | 19 | 0.58 | .279 |
Valdes was hit hard in his only start this week, allowing five runs on eight hits (including four homers) over four innings. Ouch.
C Francisco Pena (DWL - Cibaenas)
Team | League | AVG | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | OPS |
AGU | DWL | .147 | 14 | 34 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 6 | 2 | 9 | 2 | 0 | .194 | .176 | .371 |
He's 1 for his last 14.

RHP Armando Rodriguez (DWL - Escogido)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |

Gave up his first run of the winter season in his only appearance of the week.
LHP Michael O'Connor (DWL - Licey)
Team | League | W | L | ERA | G | GS | CG | SHO | SV | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | GO/AO | AVG |

Another clean week for O'Connor who didn't allow a run in his two games.

If you haven't heard, Ollie's been getting beat up down in Mexico, not that that should surprise anyone who was even kind of paying attention last season. It's kind of sad but the guy literally has nothing left, there's nothing left to salvage, no mechanical flaws to correct and no chance he makes it out of the second week of ST, if he even makes it that far. At this point I'd actually be a little surprised if he ever pitches in the majors again.
