That part where having the best player since Babe Ruth didn't seem to help them
all that much might prove sobering to the Giants FO.
The twit was just the kind of thing you get from people who don’t get numbers. Of course a team that doesn’t put much stock in stats is going to win at times. Numbers give you an edge, they don’t guarantee anything.
wait who had the best player since Babe Ruth

yeah
I don’t get what Jack Str was saying.
That the A’s had the best player since Babe Ruth and that didn’t help them?
That the 2010 Giants had the best player since Babe Ruth?

Barry Bonds.

That makes sense.
I was looking at their current roster, and going, “huh?”

Yeah--the statistically best player since Babe Ruth is definitely not
on the Giants 2010 roster.
very true
he had maybe the 8th best player since Ruth

who were the 7 better players?
I’m honestly curious. I don’t like Bonds, and I downgrade him a bit because of the steroid stuff, but in terms of pure impact on the field, who was better?
2009 Did Not Happen
I'm in the same boat.
You can even say that Bonds was one of the most impactful guys off the field, too, since he was the match that ignored the entire steroids thing, which is still the lens we view players and the game through today.

I think to compare Bonds and Ruth...
One has to fast forward about 50 years, and see how views on roids and HRs have changed. It’s the nature of baseball. The book isn’t written in the present, it’s written far into the future. In that vein, I think David Eckstein will be the future Ruth, once grission is included on baseball cards.

this is crazy talk
The only reason that even Ruth is clearly better is that he also pitched.
I don't have a problem with this
Look on page 123 in Moneyball, it specifically says, “Don’t draft a really good group of starting pitchers.”
It wasn't a "how to" guide to building a baseball team, it was a book about a smart FO finding undervalued assets.
Which assets are undervalued are constantly changing.

I'm guessing Mount17 was being sarcastic

The "page 123" is what tipped me off.

LOL....
I was unsure until Mount17 confirmed. My copy of Moneyball, like a child born into substance abuse, lives with my dad now. I wish I had not lost custody, because from here on Moneyball quotes appear to be gold Jerry, GOLD!

I've never read Moneyball
“page 123” just appeared to be too convenient (plus the whole good pitching being valued by everyone with half a brain part).

Add another guy to the list
of people who didn’t read “Moneyball” and don’t know what it was about, I guess.
Why are people so dumb?
Just, in general?
Just how, exactly, is San Francisco winning the World Series supposed to refute anything?

And the fact that having a really, really good rotation isn't saying anything against advanced stats.

I'm interested....
In how a great rotation, used efficiently, may skew stats in a short series. Think about the 86 NLCS. The Mets were clearly the better team, but unless Game 6 ended in a manner that defies statistical analysis, Mike Scott would have been on the mound in Game 7. I’m convinced that if that happened there would have been a Red Sox-Astros WS, and the best time of my early life would have been crushed, and I would have known the pain felt by my younger brethren on here.

Good pitching beats good hitting more often than good hitting beats good pitching
or something like that?

I brought this up in the applesauce yesterday
think about it you only need to win 36 innings to win a series, you’re best pitcher can pitch 18 of those innings, in theory, that’s a huge impact.

How many great starting pitchers are needed?
The Phillies weren’t good enough. I’m thinking that you might need three 5+ WAR pitchers, maybe four, to have a high probability (no idea how to calculate this) of winning a playoff series. Even then, you still should have great defense and an adequate offense.

well I'd argue part of the problem for the Phillies
was Manuel’s moronic ass sending Blanton out there instead of Halladay on short rest.

36 innings?!
Wow, I want 7-game ALDS’s even more.

Ok....
I have given the Giants the benefit of the doubt thus far. I really am far more interested in fairly obvious “bad process leading to good results” type situations than in any alternative, because in many cases it’s only through analyzing those that you learn a lot in a short period of time. But this guy is a dick. Call it cross-Bay antipathy or something, but the man just was part of a WS winner, and this is what he chooses to say? C’mon man. Come out and say “listen, here’s where we saw something that no one else did and look how smart we are,” and I respect you. I may still think you’re a dick, but I respect you. This is just ridiculous.

He was baited and only said it after Joe and Evan basically begged him to. I wasn’t the least bit offended.

Utley maybe?
