Jose Reyes Should Go to the Yankees

The pinstripe legacy is as much part of Yankee brand as the current team, but Brian Cashman is right not to allow the ghosts of Ruth, Gherig and Mantle influence his decisions as GM. Jeter made a career playing in the Bronx and he has been handsomely rewarded. For Jeter to admit earnings of $15 million to IRS in 2011 is far from disappointing. Cashman’s offer is quite generous, particularly when he doesn’t even have to leave the tri-state area to find an upgrade in talent. The Yankee GM should shop in Queens to see what it would take to put Jose Reyes in the Bomber’s leadoff spot. Jose Reyes is 9 years Jeter’s junior, considered one the elite leadoff men in all of baseball and has far superior defensive range than #2. Mr. Reyes has proven he can produce on the New York Stage, batting .308 at Yankee Stadium, plus he is scheduled to earn $11 million this year ($4 million less than Jeter). Of course, what’s the cost of this ticket? With the Mets in a rebuilding phase, young talent close to the majors would be the key; perhaps Phil Hughes and catching prospect Austin Romine. Now is Cashman willing to make the call? I’m sure if Ruth, Gherig and Mantle could play with a player of Jose Reye’s caliber they would.
