Mets 40-Man Roster Moves
Five players have been removed from the Mets 40-man roster.
All five have been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, and four of them saw way too much playing time with the Mets in either 2009 or 2010. The other is still pretty ruff around the edges.
In other, better news, Joaquin Arias was claimed by the Royals. Arias (-0.3), Santos (+0.7), Feliciano (-0.1), and Hessman (+0.1) combined for 0.4 fWAR and 523 plate appearances with the Mets.

I'd rather have an empty roster spot
Actually, we had that too. It sucked. I take that back.

he has options, so he wouldn't have gone through waivers. I think.

I’m pretty sure whenever you take someone off the 40-man they have to pass through waivers.
Not that anyone would claim him.

We are going to rue this day
Now even though my stats don’t show it I feel really good about what I did down here and it will really help me when it comes to Sring [sic] Training next year. Now that it is all over back to Oregon I go and home to rest and relax and get ready for Spring Training.

He’ll be 23 in December.
Just because his first year playing was 1997
doesn’t mean that’s the year he was signed. He could have been signed in the winter of 2006 when he would have still been 18. Mack is a great resource but I don’t always 100% trust him.
Also, I don’t think Familia is elligble after 2011? He was signed before age 19 and will have only been in the org for four years. I believe its the same for Flores, Marte, and possibly Puello as well, though I’m at work so I can’t be super thorough on fact-checking right now. Could be wrong, but I think all these guys have an extra year.

If you have more accurate info, then share with us.
Getting the exact date those prospects were signed is not particularly easy.
Yes its definitely tough
I’ll see what I can dig up when I get home. I’m iffy on Valdespin because it depends on exactly what date he signed on. The others (at least Flores, Marte, and Familia, didn’t check Puello) though didn’t actually play until 2008, and all clearly signed before they were 18. I’m pretty sure this works the same way as MLB service time, where you need a full five years (not, say, 4.75 years) before becoming elligible, so unless one of them signed before the 2007 began and simply didn’t play that year for some reason, they won’t have five full years in the org until some time during the middle of the 2012 season, meaning they wouldn’t be Rule V elligble until after that season.

Recap
Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s 40-man roster and:
– were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or
– were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.
Assuming they were signed at the first season with the Mets, given the lack of information about signing date (the problem is really those who had their first season at age 19, but could have signed at 18):

What if they were signed at 42?
because I’m still waiting to be drafted.
The Mets GM is Sandy Alderson: A Dynasty is Born
With your experience and clubhouse leadership, you can take over 2B tomorrow.
Though you’ll have to compete with Duda for the position.
And the rest of the list

There are others who might be eligible, but then we have to comb through the past drafts.
I'm pretty sure age only matters for IFA's
for draft picks it’s strictly number of years in the organization.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon (and Billy King-Paul G B)
You mean, most IFA's were signed at 18 and younger while most draftees were 19 or older.
In any case, we have to count how many years they had in the organization.
Yup, this looks rightier to me
Than what the quotes you had from Mack were. Otherwise guys like Flores and Tovar would have been elligible before their age 21 season, which I can’t ever remember an instance of.

I’m guessing that of the guys currently on the 40-man roster, these will still be there after the 2011 season:
starting pitchers:
R.A. Dickey
Dillon Gee
Jenrry Mejia
Jon Niese
Mike Pelfrey
Johan Santana
relievers;
Bobby Parnell
Hisanori Takahashi
Catchers:
Josh Thole
Infielders:
Ike Davis
Nick Evans
Daniel Murphy
Jose Reyes
Ruben Tejada
David Wright
Outfielders:
Jason Bay
Chris Carter
Lucas Duda
Fernando Martinez
Angel Pagan
That’s 19 out spots filled. Assuming none of these minor league pitchers end up in the bullpen in 2012 (save Mejia!), the team will need 3-4 more roster spots for relief pitchers. For the outfield we’d probably need to get another CF to backup Pagan, assuming Duda or F-Mart gets RF. For the infield assuming that Reyes is signed, 2nd base will be either Murphy, Havens, or an outside acquisition. Of the minor leaguers that must be protected, I count (Havens, Ratliff, Familia, Flores, Holt (if he improves), Marte, Puello, Lutz). Of course many of the other guys on the list might be worth protecting.

not sure which one you thought was Ok but rough around the edges.
for me I think Feliciano deserved to be called up. we had some OF problems and he was hitting great down at Buffalo. He came up and he decent for being a reserve and I still think he is a good guy to have around the organization for spot call ups.
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
i can agree with that on feliciano
i also think valdes can be usable out of the pen with a competent manager
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
Yeah
I think Valdes actually has some value since he’s flexible enough to be an option for emergency starts and appears to be able to eat some innings out of the pen.

Change Oliver Perez’ name to oh, say, Jovan Santana, and drop him off the 40. Someone will claim him off waivers and bingo, problem solved.

Rockies declined option on Jeff Francis...
Would he accept a minor league deal? He’s right around league-average when healthy (4.46 FIP/xFIP). He had shoulder issues, didn’t he? I suppose that would be worrisome.
I'd rather go after Garland if we're targeting potential #5 guys.

I know in the NHL after age like 33 a player no longer can qualify as a rookie (and thus would be a RFA after his deal is up).

FRANCOUER
No big deal losing Arias, but why didn’t they simply release Francouer instead of paying his salary to play for Texas & letting the player traded for him go for nothing? Wait, I will answer my own question: Minaya.
OLIVO
Just read that Miguel Oliva is a free agent. Looks like a good fit for Mets catching corps- he hit .295 against lefties last season. Great platoon partner for Thole. Or could take the starting job outright.
I'd rather get Napoli
.305 AVG, .399 OBP, .567 SLG, .966 OPS, .262 ISO v. LHP and also had a 4.3 UZR/150 at 1B which adds to his versatility.

im a bit leery of Olivo because last year was a career year for him in OBP, cracking .300 for the first time ever
fueled largely by BABIP (his BB rate was slightly above his usual, but im not sure i’m ready to say he’s got a new approach at the plate yet) I’m not saying he’s a bad choice overall. He seems fairly durable, and as far as catchers go he’s not an awful hitter with some pop and speed, but his BABIP of .346 from last year is probably not sustainable, so take his numbers with a grain of salt.
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
