I like Terry Collins' fire.
Nice touch.

My question is...
had Wally Backman gotten the job, what would his fire look like?

The 'Independence Day' fireball of destruction

Man, I hated that movie
one of the only movies I ever walked out of… I think Backman’s fire is more like the hailing meteorites of “Armageddon” … cause he likes to throw stuff.
You mean like
for unintentional comedy, cheesy god-awful one-liners and ridiculousness? Or for Harry Connick’s stellar acting?
If you believe that, wow, you need to see some more movies.
Oh, come on
Independence Day is far too ridiculous for serious condemnation. It’s weird for me to even conceive of someone hating it.
I’ve seen quite a few movies and I’m comfortable with my embrace of Independence Day, thank you very much.
"I think Murdertron makes a good point though."
Agreed
Expectations are the key. If you went in expecting Shakespeare In Love, then disappointment is inevitable. If you went in hoping to see aliens blow shit up, some Big Willy Style one liners, Jeff Goldblum reprising Ian Malcolm, Randy Quaid being weird and a hokey but memorable Bill Pullman speech then all-time classic it is.

Exactly
Independence Day was a fun action packed movie. There was definitely a lot of cheese, but if you embraced it as camp, then it was all good.

I don't know...
It’s still an awesome movie, all that included.

That said
I’m still looking forward to Camelot next year. Not as much as Game of Thrones, but Starz has thrown out some decent programming in Spartacus, and Pillars was excellent.
I actually really like a lot of bad movies
and am not very discriminating. Independence is seriously beyond awful and unwatchable. When every attempt at a comedic one-liner falls flat, and at the same time you have these cheesy “let’s take ourselves seriously” scenes (which there are a lot of in that movie) it’s just painful. Take a movie like Zombieland or Die Hard or even Tango and Cash. Those movies don’t take themselves seriously and are about 100 times better and more watchable than Independence Day. Throwing around the word “American classic” just cheapens the word.
And if Independence Day is an "all time classic"
what is “Raiders of the Lost Arc” and “Scarface” and “Star Wars” and “Shawshank Redemption”, or going back further “The Godfather” and “Casablanca”. I think those are actual classics.
I like Christmas Jebus best
Dear Eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Baby Jebus, in your golden, fleece diapers, with your curled-up, fat, balled-up little fists pawin’ at the air…
why is that a misread?
i saw the same thing. He is Don.Jebus.

Warthen
Terrible
When R.A. Dickey was asked Wednesday if he had an opinion on some teammates not going, he said, "I do have thoughts on that. I don’t want to make them public." He said he had not talked to any of the players who did not attend, but noted that he found the experience worthwhile.
"To be able to look a guy in the eye who doesn’t have arms or legs and say, ‘Thank you,’ that’s a big deal," Dickey said. "I take it personally."
Yeah
I don’t know how good he is, but why does he keep his job? Just seems like you’d change to a guy of Collins’ choice but maybe he likes him. Continuity for Niese, parnell? I never thought Johan and warthen were on the same page.
That's something I don't get
Warthen isn’t terrible, but he isn’t anything special, either. There probably were better people we could have hired this Winter if we got rid of Warthen. But we didn’t. So, I don’t know what’s up with that…

I guess we have to dump Castillo now
To get Mookie his #1 back. If that’s the reasoning for dumping Luis, it’s good enough for me.

I'm most interested in our new hitting coach
I think that having a hitting coach, who lives, eats and breathes hitting instruction, will be an improvement over a hitting coach who doesn’t think that hitting coaches are important.
"The Mets are gonna be amazing!" - Casey Stengel
meh....just because he wrote a book.
dude has a grand total of (7) major league at bats. I’ll wait until mid-season.
Why would the number of MLB at bats be relevant?
Great hitters rarely become great hitting coaches.

This
Knowing what to do, and being able to do it aren’t mutually inclusive.
But you can't discount that '79 season in Waterloo
or his legendary ‘82 season in Modesto (.937 OPS!). Sure it’s high desert, but still impressive.
Rudy Jaramillo is widely considered one of the best hitting coaches in baseball
He never had a major league at bat.
It's all about being a good teacher.
Typically the people who are best at something are not the best teachers because it just comes naturally to them. When you ask them to go over their process, the answer is typically “well, I just did it…so you should just do it too”. A teacher who has to think about and know the process can preach that process to the students and can know it inside and out.

Rickey Henderson teaching Mets how to steal bases in 2006 at spring training
"O.K., guys, this is how Rickey stole bases. Rickey would get on first base, take a lead and go. And if Rickey got thrown out at second, he’d get on base the next time and steal second, and third." – Rickey Henderson

But he will have a long commute from Africa
What's the score, boys?
What did Bugs Bunny do?
What's with the Carrot League baseball today?
Anyone else think
that Chip Hale just looks like a 55 year old David Wright? It’s maybe because he’s in DW’s position but it looks uncanny…
Didn't notice until you said it
But now….yeesh that’s close.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
