Good article about Derek "Bubba" Starling. He is a high school varsity baseball, basketball and football player from Kansas. Starling is currently ranked as the #1 high school prospect in the nation by Baseball America. He is a 5-tool center fielder, as well as a RHP who occasionally registers 95mph on radar guns. Starling hits for great power. He also is quite fast, and has been timed running a 4.36 40 and 6.56 60. Most baseball scouts project Starling as a center fielder, and he has been compared with Dale Murphy and Josh Hamilton. Starling is currently committed to the University of Nebraska as a quarterback on the football team, and as a baseball player. Scott Boras is his advisor, and will demand a hefty signing bonus to keep him out of college. In other years, a talent like Bubba Starling could be the overall #1 pick. The 2011 draft is so deep that many teams may prefer to select a player who is also a top talent, but who is also more likely to sign, and sign somewhere near slot. It is not inconceivable that Boras will demand a $10 million bonus. There is a possibility that Starling could be available when the Mets select at #13. Sandy Alderson has publicly stated that not only will the Mets go over slot, but that they need to in order to build a top farm system. It is a bit early for draft previews, but Starling is one to watch.
