WTF?
I think someone needs to re-MSPaintz the Barajasaurus, put a bunch of gold bricks and $100 bills in there, and put a Dodger hat on it, then post it over on the Dodgers blog.
Eh, you know what? Good for Rod. He always seemed like a nice guy, albeit not such a great player.

didn't the mets
only give him 1 mil last year? and he sucked for them. he hit his usual few quick HRs for the Dodgers and they reimbursed hum 4 times as much. Duh!
No, seriously, what are they going to be paying him?

HAHAHAHAHAHALOLOLOLOLOLOLOLHAHAHAHAHAHA
Is this even for real? Does Ned Coletti have learning disabilities? Barajas was putrid after May for the Mets, yet 65 ab’s with the Dodgers gets him a guaranteed contract and a huge raise?
Oh yeah…the Contest Part II is in full swing. The question is who is Coletti up against?

Good move for the Dodgers, upgrading their catcher position from last year
Barajas 2010: .240/15/47
Martin 2010: .248/5/26
AVG, HR and RBIs are the only stats that matter
this is how ned colleti sees his moves:

this is what the rest of the world sees:

How is Brian Sabean going to respond?

I kind of like to imagine Sabean and Colleti as bros who call each other up all the time
to talk shit about the awesome moves they just made.

I refuse to look it up, but iirc the weird thing is
that if the Mets had simply shot Barajas around the end of May and dumped his body in deepest darkest Willett’s Point he would have been worth for the season around what the Giants will be paying him next year.
Maybe that’s the plan! If Barajas vanishes in May 2011 we’ll know the secret.
LOL
apparently in LA they like their overpaid barely over-replacement level catcher more than type B compensation. This makes Omar’s decision to trade him look good in comparison.
Did the Mets even get anything for him?

Dumb honest question
If this is concensus hilarious, why does fangraphs think his 1.2 wins were worth $4M+ last year?
well 1 because russel martin is MUCH better and was nontendered
and 2 because you can probably find a catcher to put up similar numbers for close to the league min

re: #2
Why would that be? In theory they’d be expected to put up replacement level numbers while Rod averages more than a win a year over the past few years. Not a lot but nothing to sneeze at — 3 or 4M on the market normally.
Not contesting, just trying to get to the bottom.

for one the evaluation method for catchers is questionable
because they don’t know how to measure catcher defense. And for whatever reason there just are usually a bunch of catchers who can be projected to perform in the same .5-1 WAR range available all the time. Just this season on the market there’s gerald laird, the aforementioned Russel Martin, gregg zaun, Ronny Paulino and bengie molina (plus olivio but I’m guessing him and possibly Martin will get signed for significantly more)

Sounds like "replacement level" for catcher
is gauged too low, then, no? The system is meant to measure what one gets above just the sort or readily aailable and cheap player you describe.
by Pack Bringley on Dec 4, 2010 10:42 PM EST up reply actions
well not necessarily in terms of your first point
the system isn’t really built to judge how teams value different positions. So a 1 WAR catcher will probably make less than 4 million because his offensive production is going to be WAY WAY less than the production of a a 1 WAR first basemen or something. Basically WAR per dollar is for all positions but that doesn’t mean it’s going to apply as well for each individual position. Or something.

I tend to question the whole evaluation of the cost of each WAR
fangraphs uses about 5 Million/WAR which sounds kind of ridiculous considering it means that a 100 win team would be priced fairly at $240 Million dollars.
my rather hasty/uninformed calculations:
how much is each WAR worth?
2010 MLB total opening day payrool =$2,727,588,000
52 wins (.320 win%) = # of replacement level team wins
30 teams – 2430 wins
2430 × .32 = 778 wins
cost of a league full of replacement players (going conservative w/40 man roster, assuming a replacement lvl player earn 400k minimum) – $480,000,000
cost of extra 1652 wins= $2,247,588,000
average cost of each win above 52 wins = $1,360,525.42

it uses 4.5 million
and it’s only on the open market. So it’s not saying it should cost 240 million to build a 100 in team. Unless your only avenue to acquire every player is in the fa market.
Comparing Cam Newton to other Heisman candidates is like watching the end of Jurassic Park. Sure the velociraptors had been running around causing trouble all movie, but at the end the T-Rex just comes stomping through the wall and annihilates them.- TIP

but yeah I'd also say for most positions below the 2 WAR threshold
the numbers aren’t going to match up particularly well. And there’s the fact perception plays a role, like it makes no sense that guys like GMjr get traded for while guys like Matt Murton go to Japan. So there may be multiple 1-1.5 WAR guys but teams may look at ten guys who are projected to give about the same value and say, well GMjr is the only MLB player in this bunch and go after him like he’s a scarce commodity.

Catcher defense is almost completely ignored since no one knows how to quantify it.
It’s a safe bet that Barajas isn’t that good though just from watching him. He’s not terrible, but somewhere between mediocre and average.
