Jorge Arangure says so:
Source says the #Mets are closing in on catcher Ronny Paulino
Couldn't have said it better myself. The Mets have been making googly eyes at Paulino for years now and while he looked like a really nice player four years ago, now he just looks like a decent backup option. He'll be 30 in April and hit .259/.311/.354 last year with the Marlins.
Over the course of his career Paulino has hit lefties well, going .338/.390/.491 in around a full season worth of plate appearances. He'd be a fitting platoon partner for Josh Thole, though it might also be nice for the young Thole to get some reps against southpaws himself.
Update: As Adam Rubin notes, Paulino will miss the first eight games of the 2011 season while completing his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test.
