Hessman Applesauce - Mets expect Hessman to compete for MLB spot, Flores evaluation, Met organist passes
Meet the Mets
Some nice minor league stories to pass along right at the outset. Scouting the Sally describes Wilmer Flores as a hard player to evaluate. Anthony McCarron reports that Mike Hessman is competing for a bench spot on the big league squad. And, also, Mack Ade speculates on the Mets' first round pick.
The Mets longtime organist, Jane Jarvis, passed away over the weekend. She was 94.
Metstradamus riffs on Josh Fogg, dragon slayer.
Kevin Kernan spoke with Gregg Jefferies who is proud that he never took steroids.
Joel Sherman points out that Jack Zduriencik is the one who got away.
An unfortunate headline from FanNation.
Around the NL East
The Marlins signed former Brewer closer Derrick Turnbow. They are also the first team in 2010 to suffer a drug suspension. Congratulations.
Antonio Bastardo is having an amazing winter league which has nudged him closer to the Philadelphia starting rotation.
Phillie great Lenny Dykstra is asking $14.9 million for his sewage-soaked home.
Around MLB
Ken Griffey Jr. and Kris Benson are the latest players who are in the best shape of their lives.
The Royals are thinking of moving Brian Bannister. Can Omar get a mulligan on that one?
Lance Broadway has been accused of assaulting a Dallas bar patron. Grisly photos of the victim on the site.
The Sons of Italy are producing a set of Italian American baseball cards.
The Negro League Hall of Fame has hit upon some trying financial times at the moment.
Bryce Harper's collegiate career has begun with a hit and an error.
And, finally, the Reds have signed Orlando Cabrera.

Hessman
You’d hope he’d compete for a big league job; that’s really the point of bringing hm in. I for one hope he makes the team, because I’d love to see him be the feel-good story of the year at 1B.
Well, Wang has the potential to get huge again in the right hands.

Though in the hands of the
Mets’ training staff, Wang is destined to remain limp.
I hope we sign him
just because of the inapporiate sexual pun jokes that everyone can come up with.

Wait.
What do you mean, exactly?

Wow
That guy in the Lance Broadway article got pretty severely jacked up. Ouch.

The man's eye is about to burst
I like how they refer to him as “former major leaguer” as well. Makes it seem like it’s been so long since he last pitched, as well as how he may never pitch again
Travis Hafner is made of gold
One game I was at in D.C. last year,
Broadway got a fan thrown out for calling him an asshole while he was warming up in the bullpen. He was really persistent about it too. He seemed kind of edgy.
Broadway took his shirt off before the assault.
Seriously.
“He’s taken his shirt off, he takes a running start from Ivan’s left-hand side, punching Ivan in the left side of the face, knocking him out. It broke his orbital socket, broke his cheekbone…shattered his nose, detached his retina….”

Looks like his time in our Minor League taught him well, then.

That Joel Sherman article
is an astounding piece of revisionist history.
Had he been named the Mets’ amateur scouting director, Zduriencik might have found that talent and might have been on the GM trajectory. Instead, bypassed for the role, he left for the Dodgers in 1998. Today Phillips lives in disgrace, Duquette does radio and Minaya is barely holding on as GM after overseeing another discouraging Mets offseason.
That, muh fren...
… is an insult to actual revisionist historians.

Over/under
on number of mets fan who saw the lance broadway story and who’s initial thought was “we should have kept this guy he’s got more heart/grisson/toughness than the rest of our roster combined”.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I'd disagree
just because I remember fans on metsblog saying that Wright/Beltran weren’t likely to instigate bench clearing brawls in defense of a team mate and that’s why they weren’t real leaders/this team had no leader.

i dunno
Coming in from the bullpen is a little different than sucker punching someone into intensive care, then beating up a bunch of women for good measure.
Sorrels said that McGuire kicked Pinney in the face after he had dropped to his knees. Afterwards, according to Sorrels, a brawl broke out and Broadway punched several women, knocking one out.
On my iphone
“Zduriencik,” above, is a different font size. haha cut and paste. shit’s almost as hard as Krzyzewski!
is he the one from the x-files
who got his arm chopped off by the Siberians so the vaccine wouldn’t turn him into a zombie?
Brian Bannister
would be a nice addition..again.
i liked Bannister too
he may not be great but I was still pissed when we traded him away for Burgos.

He'd arguably be better than everyone in our current rotation not named Santana

Yup. Why Omar thought trading away a servicible starter for a shaky reliever will always boggle my mind.
And, of course, had we not signed Bannister away, we would have found 1 more win in 2007 and 2008, and gotten into the playoffs…

Well the explanation I always heard
was at the time we had Humber, and Pelfrey in the wings and Bannister projected to be the least impactful of the three so he was trading from a strength for a weakness. Which would make more sense if around the same time he hadn’t traded two fire ballers for so-so starting prospects, one of whom who we never really gave much of a chance.

Exactly. I mean, it's not like we had Lindstrom around or anything...Oh wait...

I should change my sig to
“He’s better than everyone in our current rotation not named Santana” or
“He’s better than everyone in our lineup not named Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Pagan or Bay” though the 2nd one is too long.
Stopped doing MS Paints.
Hessman
Can’t see him making the bench.. Seems like the bench will shake out: Cora, Blanco, GMJ, Tatis, with Carter and F-Cat battling for the last spot (we need a decent lefty off the bench, and I believe Hessman is a righty anyway).
Strikethrough Fail
I guess that doesn’t work on comment titles. Anyway, strike lefty in the comment above.
Hessman is the prototypical Quad-A guy.
He’s a nice story, but he’s really not going to add much to the MLB roster.
RIP, Ms. Jarvis
Had a chance to meet her under unfortunate circumstances— her two-week evacuation from her apartment following a crane collapse in 2008.
I’ve dealt with many people— young and old— under that sort of duress. I don’t remember anyone being quite so placid— and borderline chipper— in the face of such uncertainty/disturbance (and it wasn’t senility, believe you me).
I don’t know why they can’t make the canned organ music they play during weekend day games HER versions of “Meet the Mets,” “Hat Dance,” and the like. It would be a really, really easy tribute… and one that would be very much appreciated by longtimers.

Re: Flores Article
He projects for additional size through the shoulders, but it is too early to say how much muscle his frame can carry considering his age and the possibility he is not done growing.
One thing that really annoys me when it comes to MSM/popular opinion evaluation of prospect acquired through IFA is they seem to forget how young and raw these guys are when they come in and once they’ve heard about them for a few years, without them making it the majors/making significant leaps in production in the minors and decide they’re complete busts. But when you consider the fact Flores has been in the system for 2 years, and he’s still too young to even project how his frame will develop it’s not that surprising that after 3-5 years in the minors a guy like F-mart still isn’t ready for the majors. I mean in 2 years are people going to be declaring Flores a bust and claiming we should trade him for spare parts cause he hasn’t lived up to the hype?
On the flip-side it’s also why I think it’s ridiculous for some people to say it’s okay the mets don’t draft well/go overslot because of bringing in IFA’s, just because the guys are so far away and hard to project.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I agree generally, but don't forget
that within the space of a couple of years a guy can do a lot to demonstrate he can’t cut it and won’t make it. If he develops no power, if he improves in none of the significant categories, if he turns out to be injury prone, if he demonstrates he has a ten-cent head, if he goes from being at the top of his group to merely average or worse. All of those are bad signs.
I agree a guy can definitely prove he's not a good prospect
but, outside of the injury proneness, if people were rating f-mart a top 50 prospect 3 years ago based on nothing but projectables it doesn’t make sense to suddenly drop him out, when he’s finally actually started living up to those projectables with the bat, just because you decide you’ve heard about him too long.
And it’s not just with F-mart there’s a lot of IFA’s who the get the same treatment. First prospect gurus overrated them based entirely on their projections at like 16 years old, then at 19 drop them out of their top 100s because they haven’t lived up to the hype yet.
