J.J. Putz Never Took a Physical
Well that makes a lot more sense than if he had taken a physical and the trade went through.

I get it.
Business as usual for a FO that has no business running a ball club (or a Taco Bell franchise for that matter).
I used to want Omar fired.
Now I want him fired and kicked in the nuts.

Especially when the Mets told Putz not to talk about being hurt with the media.
"I knew that I wasn’t right. I wasn’t healthy. The toughest part was having to face the media and tell them that you feel fine, even though you know there’s something wrong and they don’t want you telling them that you’re banged up."
The mets are kind of like rap music. Every year something happens, like soulja boy, and I think, well this must be as bad as it gets there is no way we are not officially at rock bottom, and then a few months later they manage to top themselves in astounding an unbelievable ways, i.e Waka Flocka.

Wow. Just wow.
You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.
I was under the impressions all trades were finalized after a physical.

Ugh
This makes the Mets look absolutely awful.
…and Putz too. Let me get this straight – I knew that I was hurt when I arrived at Spring Training, so I thought that pitching in the WBC was a great idea. Why try to build up my arm strength in Spring Training, when I can just go all out right away in the WBC? Idiot.
Why didn't the mets stop him?
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Maybe they really thought he could pitch.
After all, the mind can always overcome failings of the body if you just rub enough spit on it, right?
That is certainly a good point
Why did you pitch in the WBC JJ?
and Why did the Mets let him pitch in it?
by Coolpapabell on Feb 1, 2010 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
I know correlation=causation
but the Mets had the most players in the WBC. We also had the most injuries during the season. Far be it for me to blame the WBC, but it just seemed the Mets were extremely reckless in gauging how this would impact their team. And if Putz was so hurt when he came to the Mets, why did he pitch in the WBC? I guess the reporter wasnt going to ask that question. Which is the obvious question to ask.
by aparkermarshall on Feb 1, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions
And supposedly they weren't exactly on top of monitoring them
I know early in spring training there were reports that the mexican team doctors/trainers never answered their calls when they tried to check up on Ollie, and rather than immediately pulling him off they apparently just ignored it. THen of course Ollie shows up out of shape for spring training and the rest is history.

I think it comes down to trying to win points with Bud
Just like with rarely, if ever, going above slot in the draft. Bud loves the WBC, so the Mets want to do everything they can to play along.

but what tangible benefit have the Mets received while trying to please Bud? Still no word on the All-Star game?

And honestly, is there a Mets fan out there who cares about hosting the All-Star Game?
by Bieser's Balk on Feb 1, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions
I could care less about the All-Star Game
But for some reason the All-Star game is this big holy grail for the Wilpons. And it seems like they are foresaking their team just to get it.
by aparkermarshall on Feb 1, 2010 12:52 PM EST up reply actions
This is reductive
I have no doubt they agree with Bud entirely. They go to dinner, chat about what’s good for baseball, and they’re all on the same page. Owners, if they’re not motivated to win the big prize (and I think at this point it’s clear the Wilpons are not – they want “meaningful games” that will sell tickets, and that’s all they really want) have an interest in holding down the pay for draft prospects. The Wilpons are, with Bud, trying to hold the line. They all happily agree.
yeah, this is the crux of the matter
The problem isn’t necessarily the WBC itself, but how badly the organization and the medical staff have missed and mucked up medical situations that they ought to have been monitoring closely (over the last few years, not just last season).
Is last name is Putz. ’nuff said. It is always great to see players spin stuff after they fall flat on there faces. Even if it is true how can the Mets counter this? There credibility on handling injuries is so shot Putz could have said anything and it will stick. His numbers in Chitown will be the lie detector in this one.

Don't "they" already?
The first step to making it seem like something theoretically valid is to frame it in terms and an appearance that make it more…“dignified” than it actually is. That’s why having it potentially taught in school is such a big issue, asides for the religious implications- if it’s treated as something legitimate, people will begin seeing it as such.

Funny
I was just about to post this.
What a shit show. Why did they not just tell him to get the surgery? He could have been nice piece when healthy, OR just not trade for an injured player.
What is this 1950, where you tell a pitcher to pitch through a bone spur? Don’t they know that the bone spur can break into tiny fragments and clog up the joints and make the situation worse?
Im not sure
How much more of this nonsense is going to be uncovered. People are going to be clamoring for Drayton Moore if this keeps up… ok ok I wont be a drama queen but still this FO is a farce. How do you not give him a physical? A lot of pieces went in that deal, would have saved 09 but thats a lot of pieces to give up for a one year injured rental and whatever people are classifying Sean Green as these days.
Sorry "none would have saved 09"
haha I dont think anyone would argue Mike Carp would have gotten us a playoff spot
True but
Well it would have neen nice to have Endy last year. We sure needed him. It also would have been nice to have Cleto in our system, a guy with an electric fastball, who projects as a bullpen piece.

You'd think so.
It cost the Mets Putz’s salary in 2009, his buyout, and the five players traded for him. What’s that worth—$20 million or so in the toilet, for a failure to do a routine (automatic, really) due diligence?

Omar
said it himself one night last summer being interviewed in the SNY booth during a game.
Said something like ‘we have the utmost respect in HFSS and trust our doctors and trainers. But sometimes you have to weigh the advice against putting one of our core on the DL for an extended period of time’.
Translated – to me – we’d rather them stay in and play some 70% than being on the DL and getting the treatment they need to play 100% later down the road……

knew about it prior to the trade I should say
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

I don't really think he's lying to be honest
the only thing is why would he choose to perform in the WBC / did they do no physicals for that either? If you found out you had a bone spur you would certainly not run out and do things that were certain to make it worse. But maybe he’s just stupid or got some bad medical info.
Travis Hafner is made of gold
When was the WBC anyway
he said it didn’t really get bad till May/April and near the end of spring training.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Isn't this a likely scenario?:
Putz had his stupid physical, which revealed the bone spur, but the Mets concluded poorly that he’d be fine, and Putz told them he felt fine. Hence, he signed up for the WBC. Now, after the 2009 debacle, he shows up in his new city and goes, “bozos should have never let me pitch! i was really, really hurt! haha, fucking mets, right?nothing to see there, move along… Now, on the other hand, I feel great…”
by Pack Bringley on Feb 1, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Yeah that makes the most sense to me
and it sort of gives him an excuse as to why he sucked. It says he knew about it since being a Mariner, therefore throwing at full speed before you need to / are prepared to is still a stupid decision.
Travis Hafner is made of gold
It doesn't seem like he's saying he should have never pitched
just that once the pain got really bad and he brought it up they likely should have done something. It’s not like he’s saying everyone in the world new his elbow was a ticking time bomb. He’s saying he’d known about it but seattles doctors never evaluated and he himself didn’t really know what was going on but the doctors here gave him the go ahead to pitch in the WBC so he didn’t think it was an issue until the pain in April/May.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
You're right. The controversial point
is whether or not the Mets ever checked out his elbow. The only intelligence we have on the point is Putz claiming they never “really” did, and consequently blaming Mets doctors for his throwing hard and sucking. The idea that they never checked it out at all is impossible to believe, and if this was the case, why would he equivocate. He’d be like, “they never even gave me a fucking physical.” so if the reality is that they checked it out but misdiagnosed it, well, we knew that, so why are we so over-the-top upset?
by Pack Bringley on Feb 1, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions
Well the upsetness could also stem
from allegations they told him to ignore it and not talk to the media about it rather than taking care of it in April/May when it first was a problem, which echos pretty strongly similar things reported about the Beltran’s knee situation, aThey traded a crapton of resources for a player and rather than getting something taken care of early when it became an issue, so that they could at least recoup some value they basically ignored it. I imagine if the Beltran situation hadn’t just happened, along with the issues with Reyes, and Church in the previous season, there wouldn’t be as much outrage.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
But I don't think that's the outrage
2009 was such a terrible season that not many of us have the heart to ponder the handling of our rental set-up man. People are mad because the Mets allegedly don’t even bother to give out physicals… That I don’t buy.
by Pack Bringley on Feb 1, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
I'd disagree
I think people are mad because we traded so many resources for a player, including a lot of cheap controllable players for a specific player and then possibly were more concerned with saving face then getting an issue fixed early.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Yeah, well
there’s not evidence for that either other than his say-so. and why wouldn’t he say it?
in any case this conversation got a little meta and i’m confused.
by Pack Bringley on Feb 1, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions
Given that he echos pretty much precisely what happened with Beltran, Reyes, etc
- the front office doesn’t want to hear about anything that will require time on the DL, they want to “manage” injuries, send the player out there to play in pain for as long as possible until they break down completely, at which point we’ll be in the latter half of the season and hopefully lots of tickets will have been sold - I find his story very plausible.
Now, maybe he heard the Beltran story, said to himself, hey, I could use that to explain my bad year! That’s possible, but sounds to me less likely that what we already know to be absolutely true about the way this organization looks at injury.
There's evidence
in recent history with the mets handling of injuries, if this was an isolated case it would be one thing but it basically sounds like exactly what’s happened with multiple players, including stars in the last 2 years.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
have we passed the Oakland Raiders yet?
Are we more of a laughingstock than that team? Can Omar Minaya trade for JaMarcus Russell and insert him into the starting rotation?
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

How much has Omar cost, in just the past two seasons (2009 until the present), in bad contracts, extensions, trades, etc.? Lol the best part is
He had the same condition in 2008 and was able to pitch with it.
you mean the 08 season in his walk rate sky rocketed, his ld% flew up and his gb% plummeted, or continued it’s plummeting as it were, albiet he was stuggling with other injuries. Cause clearly none of those peripherals were red flags.
Though I suppose I shouldn’t assume anyone in the mets front office knows what peripherals are at this point.

Yeah, jesus. This is horrifying.
“was able to pitch with it.” What on earth are the requirements to be hired over there?
“Beltran has always had trouble with his knees and has been able to play, so obviously he could play this year.”
I thought the whole idea with Putz
is that he was recovering from his injury in 2008 and was going to be healthy in 2009 and hopefully return to his pre-injury dominance. But the FO knew (or should have known) that wasn’t possible. Just wonderful.
Well his 2008 main injury was a rib injury
the bone spur was another issue but I don’t know if anyone ever related his 2008 struggles to it.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Another brilliant point is that if the FO had handled this wisely and well
they probably could have declined Putz’s option and brought him back for around what the White Sox will be paying him. When he’s healthy Putz can be brilliant.
And why didn’t his family ever change its name? HS must have been a lot of fun.
Yeah it's kind of weird
usually they hold onto bad players too long rather than admitting their mistake, but when a player, like Putz, might be valuable they cut him loose.
Although maybe Putz has no desire to return here?
