Endy Chavez signs with Rangers
Minor-league deal with a spring training invite, which I don't really understand. I know he won't be able to play until around June, but if he fully recovers, he'd be an excellent addition to the bench.

Eh. I can't exactly say that we missed out or anything.
But, still…There was no reason to go out and trade for GMJ when Pagan is around to play center for the first month or so, when Beltran is out, and there were plenty of low-end deals like this that could have been had.

I love Endy and all
But I can’t get worked up over not acquiring a guy who won’t be ready until June at the earliest. Really, when they grabbed Jason Pridie they grabbed a fairly close analog.
Plus,
How can you expect him to be the same player defensively once he recovers?

somtimes minor league deals pay a player up to $1 million even before he makes the majors
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

It couldn't have hurt
but he wouldn’t have been ready till June so it wouldn’t have really helped our of depth, and it wouldn’t make sense to skip over signing someone like Pridie to wait for a cf that won’t be ready till June.

I kind of wish the Mets had signed him
but seeing as he’s not ready til June, I don’t mind

I actually like that they got Pridie instead.
Neither one is a sure thing, but at least if Pridie pans out we have him on the cheap for a long time. That move actually reminded me of how he got Endy in the first place.

true, Pridie is cheap
and anyway, this will be redundant when Beltran comes back and GMJ is the fifth outfielder. Sigh.

Yeah, Your all probably right
I don’t now anything about Pridie, but if he’s anything like Endy…
I think you are all mistaken
Endy would have been much much better than GMJ or Pridle and June was no longer operative as by all accounts his recovery was well ahead of schedule. Some reports had him back as early as May or even late April. And of course we know how good a fit he is in New York. Just another clear indication that Jeff Wilpon has capped the payroll and capped his General Manager in the process.
Is there really much reason to think he'd be that much better than Pridle?
Obviously Pridle hasn’t put up the ml defensive numbers that Endy has, but it seems like he has the same kind of defensive upside.

If I was recovering from a severe knee injury,
I’d want to avoid the Mets’ medical staff too. In all seriousness, I wouldn’t expect him back so soon, nor would I try to rush him back, either. And he would be rather redundant with Pridie on the roster already. Yeah, we could have two awesome defensive outfielders, but neither one is particularly good with a bat. Endy’s not bad, but neither of them has any power.

lets see Pridle make that same catch Endy made in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS
and then we’ll talk. No but seriously upside is fine and I don’t really know anything about Pridle but unless you are worried about Endy’s knees holding up, I don’t think the value of his glove is really in question relative to just about anybody. And GMJ may be the worst def outfielder in baseball right now.
yeah I have
and have you looked at his UZR and OBP the last few seasons?
But, he did this:

In all fairness, that single play was probably better than anything 99% of current major leaguers will ever do.
I’m sure I’ll remember that 30 years from now, when I’m not sure I’ll remember my girlfriends birthday.

Girlfriend's birthday.
That’s coming up for me soon. Thank you, and GMJ, for reminding me.

I guess you're talking to me
I have no use for GMJ, I just wanted to poke at your using one catch as an argument, particularly when another guy in the discussion has an equally awesome catch on his resume..
I guess my sarcasm didn't come through enough in that comment
if you took me seriously that I was focused only on that one catch. Never mind. The real point is that GMJ was a horrible pickup regardless of how one thinks of Endy or any other player.
Dude, pitchers and catchers in two days
It’s spring! (almost). Just a little joking, didn’t mean to get your back up. Everybody is with you on GMJ.
I don't think I'd have had an issue with the trade at all if he was in the last year of his deal.
Let him fill in on the bench while Beltran is recovering and then make a decision sounds like a good enough plan. The fact that cutting him now cuts into next years budget by at least 600,000 annoys me.

wait a second
I thought the Angels were picking up everything. If the Mets have to pay $600,000 to get rid of this guy next year, this deal is even worse than I thought!!!
If we stop talking/thinking about it, does it go away?
No, huh?

Is this the Jason Orville Pridie who put up an OBP of .300 in his last 1150 PAs in AAA?
In a full season at Rochester in 2009 at age 25 his OPS was 677.
If he’s the world’s fastest human I can see stashing him in A ball and calling him up when we go to the 40 man rosters in the fall, but otherwise? Whatever he might bring with the glove he can’t possibly make up for at the plate.
its the same fellow
yeah, I don’t get the love for him either. I’ll be the first to admit Endy isn’t the greatest hitter in the world but he looks like Ted Williams compared to Pridie.
