This isn't as bad

as when Lopez signs for Cora’s salary.

by Delgado on Feb 19, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

this has been a landmark offseason

Major market correction, with a spate of the most management-friendly contracts in a decade. Smart-spending teams could find anything they were looking for this year on short-term deals for half last year’s price. And so Omar, naturally, mostly sat it out, concluding he couldn’t find anything attractive enough to move on.

by anonymous on Feb 19, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

this year seems a lot like last year

and abreu for $5 mil is likely to be better than any deal so far this offseason

by inventor frank on Feb 19, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

and also

if the story on wilpon okaying things one by one is true, here’s one case where you can’t just close your eyes and point a finger at omar

by inventor frank on Feb 19, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

I've got more than one finger to point

Honestly, at this point I’m just using “Omar” synecdochically to mean “the entire team ownership, management, and front-office clusterfuck from the Wilpons on down.” It’s easier than typing all that out every time.

by anonymous on Feb 19, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah--it's absolutely bizarre the way the Wilpons run player acquisition.

Omar’s not a good GM, but even Theo would have a hell of a time putting a team together this way.

by SeanSchirmer on Feb 22, 2010 6:38 AM EST up reply actions

That's dependent on how things were done in the past, vis-a-vis that weird "report their offer, and we'll look at our budget".

Given that, in the past, money never seemed to really be a problem, I am of the opinion that the above “game plan” is something that was developed recently, due in part because Omar is a lame duck, that, for whatever reason, they won’t fire yet, and want to minimize the resources that the team will have invested past his tenure (which is thrown out the door, to a degree, with the Bay signing). I don’t think that we’ve received “concrete” reporting that the above is how the front office has always operated. If guy like Theo Epstein were around, I don’t think he would have made as many blunders as Minaya has, and as such, wouldn’t be on a short leash (if that is, in fact, what’s going on, as is my hypothesis).

by Brooklyn Dodgers Mets Fan on Feb 22, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

But if that were the case

wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to just fire him and replace him? Plus from most reports the problems seem to come when negotiating with players who weren’t asking for more than 1-2 years anyway. How much of an impact could those resources have had past his tenure?

by Gina on Feb 22, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not in charge. If I were, I would have fired him.

I don’t know why he hasn’t been fired yet; it boggles the mind of pretty much everyone here how/why the upper front office operates, regarding personnel issues like that.

The SOP in effect right now, as opposed to the SOP from even a year ago, let alone, say, four or five, seems to be radically different, for whatever reason. Pick a reason- I see either the Madoff fallout- from which, the funds Mets organization supposedly was untouched, according to some reports- or Minaya’s status as builder of the team, and their lack of success over the past three years, as being the most likely reasons for those changes.

by Brooklyn Dodgers Mets Fan on Feb 22, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

As far as the Madoff fall out

they wouldn’t have had to have lost mets funds, or any funds, for it to affect them. What could affect them is if they’re ordered to pay back profit from the scheme, and if their other ventures are struggling because of the economy they could be attempting to squeeze as much profit out of the mets as they can to afford to pay whatever sum they’re ordered.

But even if that’s the case it doesn’t really explain the weird micromanaging. I don’t know none of it really makes any sense.

I'd rather have Alex Cora than Branyan or Lopez anyday

What do Branyan and Lopez bring to the table anyway? Alex Cora is the guy we need to build our team around. Isn’t it obvious? His name is CORA, and that is the same as CORE. He is the CORE of our ballclub.

I learned that in college.

Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

a first baseman that can hit

and a second baseman who’s better than the one we have, both for less money than cora

You know what we really need here? Dual-Cora! processor.

Nevermind that they already launched a new processor already.

You've convinced me that Alex Cora is now the best player on the team. Congrats.

That's not how I read it

There’s $1 million in incentives for this year and a $5 million mutual option for next year.

by Evan_S on Feb 19, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

$2 million with $1 million in incentives

So $3 million tops this year, and $5 million next, if the mutual option is picked up.

not when we’ve already got Mike Jacobs. (facepalm)

(click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
