Is there any way to sign Felipe Lopez?
I know the Mets have a lot invested in Castillo. And I know Castillo isn't the WORST second basemen out there, but if the Mets could scrape together the money for him now I think he would be an awesome addition to both the line-up and the defense. I think instead of giving out so many useless minor league deals to catchers and other players we dont need, they should have put that together to sign him.. but is there any way to get him now?

Not
as long as Omar still has a man crush on Cashsteala
Son, when you participate in sporting events, it's not whether you win or lose : it's how drunk you get.
You are wrong
Castillo IS the worst second baseman out there.
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.
Castillo isn't the worst 2nd basemen
David Eckstein is pretty bad, White Sox have Jason Nix and Brent Lillibridge. Braves have Martin Prado. I’d have to say Luis is about 10th worst starting second basemen. I was looking at UZR numbers for second basemen and a lot of them have posted in the -5 to -10 runs. It makes me feel a bit better about Castillo.
What's so bad about Prado?

have to disagree
if he keeps up his performance from last year he’d be pretty valuable and i’d definitely prefer him over lopez in that case
Goodbye Sir Dr. Sen. Brain SOCKS! D.D.S.R.S.V.P
If he keeps up his performance from last year,
He’s eh offensively, with his strongest asset being able to get on base, and prolong at-bats, and he’d still be terrible, defensively.

The problem is
it’s very unlikely he’d keep up his performance from last year.

AND
That the offensive performance, at least, probably represents his ceiling at this point.

Gonna back that up with anything?

The issue with Lopez is three fold
1&2. His performance offensively and defensively varies greatly from year to year. His defensive contributions last year seem like much more of an outlier than the norm and when he struggles with the bat, he’s the easiest out in MLB.
3. HIs personality and “clubhouse” contributions are poor. Most teams that have had them on their team don’t want him back (Cards and Nationals) and they are teams that could benefit from having him on roster.

I don't understand this
1/2. His price has come down so far that it’s more than a worthwhile gamble, especially for a team with a black hole at second and the resources to make it happen. Teams like the Mets can afford to take a chance like that. If he has a good year, it could make a huge difference in how this team finishes. If he has a bad year, you’re only out a couple million.
3. How do you know this? Have you met him? Should we assume Jason Bay’s clubhouse contributions are poor since the Red Sox didn’t really want him back? Same with “K”-Rod, since the Angels had no interest in bringing him back? Like handling a pitching staff, I’m sure there’s some value in clubhouse contributions, but since we can’t quantify it, let’s stop pretending we can evaluate it and let’s certainly stop paying for it.

lmao
1/2. “his price has come down so far that it’s more than a worthwhile gamble” How do you know this? Have you met his new agent? There’s still plenty of teams with potential starting spots for Lopez (SD, DC, STL, ARZ, COL). The Mets don’t have a black hole at 2nd base.. they have a defensive sieve with a decent no.2 hitter playing there. Hudson got $5 million (guaranteed, which is more than he got last year) just two weeks ago and Damon just signed.
3. Terrible examples. BoSox let Bay walk because of price vs injury concerns. Angels let K-Rod walk because of price vs injury concerns, which is the same story with Figgins, Vlad, and Lackey this offseason.
Nowhere did I try to quantify it. Lopez earned this reputation after his time with the Nationals, who clearly don’t want him back because of the disruption he caused while he “played” there. Perhaps he’s resolved these issue, perhaps not.
Either way, he’s a typically poor defensive player who’s offensive skill set seems to be only adapted for hitting in the 2nd half/NL central (sarcasm). Either way, Mets are better off targeting him midseason after they see what Luis has left.

arizona signed Kelly Johnson
which is why they didn’t resign Lopez, so that takes them off, SD is trying to cut costs so it’s unlikely they’d pay much to sign him, and they’re first round pick from 2006 is a 2nd basemen, and will probably be competing with Eckstein for the job. So there’s really 0 reason to expect them to sign him considering they have two inhouse options already and aren’t tying to spend money. And washington is apparently moving guzman to 2nd base to give Ian Desmond a shot at ss, so there’s pretty much no chance there either. STL is a possibility and I’m really not sure why they haven’t at least been linked to him it makes too much sense to not happen. I guess maybe they believe some combination of Lugo/Ryan will be just as effective.

Then, like, that’s just your opinion, man.

All good points.
A smart team picks up Lopez and swaps or DFA’s Cora. If Castillo is playing well, Lopez is a great back up around the infield, where we have problems at every position. If Lopez is playing well he’s the starter at 2nd and when he fills in for Reyes or Wright Castillo starts at 2b, especially against lefthanders. I would have prefered Polanco in this role but Lopez would be an excellent pickup at this late date.

um
point out where any cardinals player or FO member has expressed disinterest in having floppy back
the fact that he hasn’t been signed to cover positions that can be covered internally for league minimum is not an indictment on floppy’s character
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
Maybe you're right about it being an outlier
but it was a nice outlier. He seems like a pretty tenacious batter. I’d be surprised if he was an easy out, much less the easiest in MLB. I know you’re just using hyperbole, but there’s a lot of competition for that title. I thought it was interesting that he uses a heavy bat without a big swing and hits the ball hard.
my issue with signing him at this point
is that it seems very likely to me that Jerry will still start Castillo over him. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be a smart move to add a high-quality player to the team, I just don’t think Jerry will value him the same way. I guess I just don’t see the point in spending money on a player I don’t think will be used properly, so I’m not going to cry out for it to happen.
ain't had enough...
Even if Jerry starts Castillo over him, he's still under contract.
Castillo might fall down the steps or something again, and suddenly, he has to start, and yada, yada, yada.

Yes, there is a way
find a billionaire to buy the team from the Wilpons, fire Omar, hire a decent GM, and get it done. Good luck.
2009 Did Not Happen
But it has to be a billionaire that the other owners like.
See Cuban, Mark.
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
Lopez
VinnyG 917 I’m with you 100% buddy. Why on earth do we sign Cintron when Felipe Lopez is available? I thought we still have money, and I thought you told us Mr Wilpon that you want the team to win!!!!!! This is not telling me that because it’s another small market move by a big market team. Give us a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bad management/worse ownership
6M for castillo 2M for Cora / what a waste of money. I figure 4-5M in the dumpster. I guess the wimpons will wait till oct to dump omar and manuel. Lopez will be signing with the cards because the Mess didn’t want to spend the money.
