Mets Sign Infielder Alex Cintron To Minor-League Deal
Details of the deal aren't yet known, and the Mets haven't actually acknowledged the signing, but several reports indicate that the team has inked Alex Cintron to a minor-league deal. I can't imagine this is much more than another moderately-recognizable name to fill out the Triple-A Buffalo roster.
Cintron appeared in 21 games with the Nationals in 2009, collecting just two hits and two walks in 28 plate appearances. He turned 31 in December and has only been above replacement once in his career, when he posted a 2.2 WAR with the Diamondbacks back in 2003.

So I guess we still need MIs, then?
Hey Omar, why don’t you give Felipe Lopez a call? Or are you still waiting for Scott Boras to make a counteroffer?

Lopez isn't a Boras guy anymore

I'm ok with it
If it’s for 36 bucks. For 36M on the other hand….(and the vesting option. Never forget that.)
You know who's a moderately recognizable name for Triple-A Buffalo?
Alex Cora

Generic snarky comment about how this signing solves all of the team's problems.
Sarcastic invocation of pending success for the NY Mets!

Is this a continuation of the Mad Libs post from last week?
Either way, rec’d.

Haha I s'pose it could be.
I was really just trying to get a jump on the inevitable.

So is this our Taste of Armageddon
no more actual sarcasm, we’ll just say “sarcastic comment” and it will get the desired result?
Well done sir.
I thought Jersey Shore was our taste of Armageddon

"another moderately-recognizable name". I recognize his name from my all-defense team at Baseball Mogul.
He was the only guy who had 100-defense-ratings on all infield positions.
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
Is he better than Cora?
I imagine it’d be pretty hard not to be.
But it is kind of funny, we need a first basemen, Russel Branyan is available for a pretty small price, instead we sign Mike Jacobs to a minor league deal. We need of depth, Eric Byrnes and Ankiel are available for relatively small prices, instead we trade for GMjr, we need a second basemen/better MI depth, Felipe Lopez is available for a likely incredibly small price, instead we sign Alex Cintron. It seems like we’re going about this depth thing in the wrong direction, like Omar thinks you can only sign players worse than your incumbent starters.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Ankiel didn't want to play in NY
But Byrnes, Branyan, and Lopez are definitely worth a look.
by Coolpapabell on Feb 23, 2010 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
Okay well forget Ankiel
my point was more that sometimes it seems like Omar, or whoever’s pulling the strings, thinks if you have a set starter, regardless of how bad they are, you can’t bring in someone who may be of equal, or even better, value, that instead you build depth by stockpiling lesser players.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Except at catcher
With incumbent Santos now at 4 on the depth chart.
Honestly, if it's possible, I think Cora might actually be better than him.

Cora's a lot better than Cintron.
If you feel like looking up Cintron’s defensive ratings, they look like what you’d get if you gave Manny Ramirez a middle infielder’s glove and said, ‘have at it!’
Brutal. Though I suppose, given that Castillo hits lefties better than righties, and that Cora hits lefties better than righties, and that Cintron hits lefties better than righties, you could say that Omar is trying to… ah hell.
I got nothin’.
by SeanSchirmer on Feb 24, 2010 3:16 AM EST up reply actions
Yup. Cintron's UZR's are so bad
I’m not posting them for fear of a fan hurting him/herself.
Btw, does this mean Cintron is the first MI to get called up when Castillo or Cora get hurt?
by SeanSchirmer on Feb 25, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions
Let's see here...
are his best days behind him? Check.
does he not draw walks? Check.
Sounds like a classic Omar signing.
That said, he probably is better than Cora.
Look up his UZRs.
Seriously. I’d provide a link but I don’t want to be responsible after someone rams their head through the monitor.

Deat god, he sucks hard.
I never thought I’d say this, but why didn’t we keep Ramon Martinez instead?

any chance
you new yorkers (im out in LA now) can organize a Manny-esque rally to get the FO to sign Felipe? I can honestly say I’d be relatively happy with the offseason if we would just add him on a 1-2 mil deal.
(Or at the minimum send some strongly worded letters)
come on people...jump on the Felipe bandwagon

Good idea.

Cintron
Are you kidding me!!!!!!! With Felipe Lopez out there you sign this waste!!! Why?
Why are you surprised?

look i know i'm gonna step on the toes of a lot of you alexcoraheads but i think
i want to say this guy could challenge for cora’s spot on los mets. basically he replicates his skill set but also. i know a lot of you guys like cora and will vote for him on opening day. thanks for reading
uhh, none of us actually really like Cora
We would rather have F-Lop

If Cintron could reverse his platoon splits his bat would complement Castillo's hitting.
But his glove would still be a problem. UZR officially rates it “godawful”. I hope the Mets are getting a warm body for AAA with no intention of bringing him to NY. Unfortunately, if either Castillo or Cora gets hurt that just leaves Anderson Hernandez.

You really think a lot of people here like Cora?
how come.

I think, maybe, you gently crazed one or two toes
at most. I don’t know where you got the idea that a lot of us here like Cora, but that probably couldn’t be further from the truth. I’d say of all the Mets blogs, this one probably has the largest consensus of people who think Cora is a waste of $2 million dollars and a roster spot.
