Mariners Re-Sign Erik Bedard, 1 Year/$1.5 Million Dollars
Pending a successful physical (in Seattle, they do those!), the Mariners will have supposedly re-signed Erik Bedard to an incentive-laden 1 year contract, with a base of $1.5 million dollars, with incentives bringing it up to $7 million dollars. According to most reports, Bedard is not going to be able to pitch until late June or early July.
Bedard is one of a few injured pitchers who the Mets should have gone after harder, in my opinion. If push came to shove, I think we could have outbid the Mariners, especially with such a small guaranteed sum (that is, if he was willing to come here, which we can only speculate about, really). He's likely only to be able to pitch anywhere between 12-15 games down the stretch, after coming back to the mound, but, following his career numbers, he'd likely be worth 1.5-2 WAR during that stretch. When he's "on", he can pitch to the tune of a 3.19 FIP; when he's not, it's about 3.90 (research care of Lookout Landing's Jeff Sullivan). As we all know, our "collapsing" problems have come primarily down the stretch. Given the health concerns of John Maine, and Oliver Perez being Oliver Perez, I'd think that having a fresh and rested Bedard, who will likely contribute the above numbers, would be a very positive thing.
When he becomes active, he gives Seattle a very potentially dangerous 1-2-3 pitching combination, in King Felix-Lee-Bedard. Some poor team could face three genuine and certified "ace" pitchers in a series.

There's up to 7 million in incentives
and like someone mentioned in another thread, if you’re an injured pitcher you can either go to the 4th place mets have have a recent history of, very publicly, royally screwing up injury management, or you can go to a team that has a very good chance of winning 90 or so games and coming in first in the division and who you’ve been with the last 2 years.
I mean unless we offered huge ridiculous amounts of money I’m not sure we stood a chance.

That's why I said, if he even wanted to come here or not would be speculation on our part.
I’ll edit that incentives number in there. I hadn’t heard it.
He’d basically be making as much as Jeff Francoeur and Alex Cora combined. While he’ll probably put up a 1.5-2 WAR, you think our seven-million dollar men will be worth even a net positive?

I'm hoping our seven million dollar men
suffer season ending injuries in spring training…but injuries that heal quickly and allow them to continue their seasons elsewhere.

Well if he earns those incentives
then Seattle got a bargain and a damn good investment
Even if all he wanted was $2 million flat
the Mets are done spending. Wilpons get $20 million from Citi Bank a year for naming the stadium after them. They are done spend that money. Why would they dip into their own pockets and invest more money and put a better product out on the field. They are content so we should be too.
if they invested more money, they could make more money.
if they put forth more money into creating a better team, more fans would be interested in the team. if the mets are in the playoff hunt, more fans would show up to games, right? if they made the playoffs, they would make extra revenue from extra games.
also, just because they are content with their on-field product doesn’t mean we should as well.
I wonder how much extra they actually would make
I imagine even if people stop showing up for games a lot of those tickets will have already been sold, and I know even when the knicks were God awful they were still selling out games weren’t they? Of course I suppose as far as baseball we’re more like the nets to the yankees knicks so maybe it wouldn’t work the same for us.

I would think an exciting playoff push would really pay off for SNY
which is an important income stream for them now.
Also I imagine
even if they only end up winning 84-86 wins they’ll be playing meaningful games long enough to still convince enough people they’re legit and sell a lot more tickets/merchandise.

was been sarcastic agree with you 100%
The Wilpons just don’t get the business aspect of it. You put a better product on the field you will see returns on your investment. Instead they don’t eat bad contracts like Castillo and Ollie they feel they have to run them out everyday because they are getting paid big money even if it hurts the team.
I don't think you can really blame the Wilpons for not trying.
The Mets do a poor job with many things, but the Wilpons have certainly made the Mets one of the highest payroll teams in the majors. Regardless of whether they spend another dime, they will still be in the top 5 again this year in that regard. The hiring decisions of the Wilpons and their insistance to stand by MLB’s slotting system are really the things putting them in this situation as far as the product on the field. Bad contracts like Castillo and Ollie will continue to hurt the franchise until the Mets start to have several young players contributing at relatively small salaries.

The idea that the Mets have no money came from Buster Olney, and wasn't backed up with a source.
There’s plenty of evidence that he’s wrong in that matter, so don’t let him get you so worked up about it. If the right situation arises, I think it’s safe to assume the Mets can add at least 5 million more to the payroll.

Your power is in your wallet
don’t go to Citi this summer! Send the Coupons a message! I’ve been bitch-slapped one too many times for awhile
We should also boycott Mets sponsors

Now's the best time to go to games!
No one else wants to go. Tickets will be found on eBay and StubHub for very cheap. I know, I’m excited.

The money I would have spent on attending a game this year
I spent on a Mitchell and Ness 86 Mookie Wilson in home pinstripes. My first big apparel purchase, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
douchion = -(grission)
This organization is a joke
Where would this team be if Johan Santana did’nt fall into Minaya’s lap? Hopefully they wise up and go hard for Jason Werth and Lee next year. That’s all I ask for, plus Ollie has a decent 1st half and we dump him at the trade dead line.
Johan must be kicking himself ...
he could have stayed in Minnesota and played with Mauer and Morneau and Orlando Hudson while competing in the playoffs year after year.

Or gone to the rangers
and been part of that huge talent explosion they’re about to have.
But he wanted to come to us cause we were committed to winning…lol

Minnesota wasn't going to pay him close to the money the Mets did
And last year was the first time the Twins made the playoffs since 2006, and they…. got swept in the first round.
Santana’s total contract with the Mets is worth $162 million, and at least $142 million with the buyout.
I know I’ve said this before, but when you’re making that much money, you rarely regret what got you to it…. unless it mean’t killing someone, or selling your soul.
The Rangers were going him close to the same
and there’s no state income tax there. And how many times have we made the play-offs since 2006? I’m not sure that’s exactly a winning argument.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Haven't they played in one game play-offs at least once since 06?
I know it’s happened once for some reason I feel like it’s happened twice. Pretty much they struggled in 07, after losing both Santana and Liriano from their rotation so it’s understandable, were one game out in 08, with a pretty shaky rotation full of young pitchers, and I think it’s safe to say having Santana would have pushed them over the edge for the season, and made it last year. I feel like that’s definitely a much better trend than the mets have had since 06.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Also they've been pretty close a few years since then
I would imagine having Santana would have put them into the play-offs comfortably.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Is it $162 million?
I thought it was something like $137 million.
The Twins I believe offered Johan a 5 year deal worth $100 million. Yes, I know he’d have left a lot on the table, but doesn’t playing for a solid winning organization that you came up with count for anything these days? We’re talking about $100 million. At some point, it just gets too ridiculous.

Well at the time
they had just let Hunter go and traded Castillo, who was still a useful player, from what I understand Santana didn’t want to go through another rebuilding effort and wanted to go to a team he believed was committed to winning a championship.
Poor guy, he should have talked to some mets fans before hand.

He didn't really come up with them though, they grabbed him in the Rule V and he went straight to the bigs.

Where he wins Game 1
and watches the Twins lose the next three. At least that’s what the pattern was while Johan was there.

agreed
I wonder what it feels like to have a competent GM. Whens the last time we had one?
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
I don't think he would have gone anywhere near us for the same amount.
If he signed with us he’d have to deal with an awful medical staff, communication issues when dealing with rehab, a much worse defense than he’ll have in Seattle, a generally disgruntled fanbase, and pretty intense (and generally hostile) media speculation. There really isn’t any reason for him to even consider the Mets until he proves he’s healthy, so I really don’t think we missed an opportunity here.

Like I said, given that we don't have any facts, it's all speculation- and I don't want to speculate.
I’ll just go with the naive notion that our GM checks out any and all players who might be helpful to the club, and that potential free agents see the Mets as possible contenders that they’d not not want to go to.

The Mariners are going to be a good team
To the point that they’re going to win that division pretty easily. They could potentially have a rotation of King Felix, Lee and Bedard, which in the playoffs would probably dominate.
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
I'mnot sure I believe they're going to win it easily.
I don’t see how what puts them that much over the top of the A’s/Rangers/Angels.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

well the Angels
have lost Figgins and Lackey, though they did get Pineiro and Socks!.
The Rangers did make some good moves, I wonder how new ownership will affect them. I’m not sure how good the A’s would be. I think right now the Mariners are the favorites, though.

Ugh I'm not sure what happened
but I was trying to say there’s a big difference between favorites and winning a division pretty easily. And Nolan Ryan was already team president so the fact he owns them now really shouldn’t make any difference.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

The Angels had a pretty good prospect in Brandon Wood that was blocked by Figgins.
Adding Kazmir at the deadline was also pretty good insurance for Lackey leaving. They should still be in good shape to be competitive, although they might not run away with it this year.

True. The Mariners won't win that division easily.
But I think they’ll win their division.

I really think the Rangers are going to be tough this year.
Their pitching is alot better, and they should be a pretty solid offensive team. They also have a really good farm system if they want to add a player at the deadline. I really thin Harden might have been the best signing any team made this offseason.

I also love the Rangers this year
If Josh Hamilton is 100% health on and off the field he’s a triple crown threat. Kinsler is so underrated its sick, and depending on how they use Neftali Feliz they have an exciting young team.
I agree. They are going to win the division, but it's going to be a three-way race.
