"Lopez ranked fourth among all free agents with a 4.6 WAR in 2009, but Boras has been unable to drum up a market for the second baseman. Now, matching last year's $3.5MM will be tough enough. Odds are Lopez won't sniff the contracts signed by Placido Polanco, Mark DeRosa, and Orlando Hudson, and he might not reach the $4.5MM level of Garrett Atkins and Pedro Feliz." - MLBtraderumors.com

If Lopez can be convinced to sign a one year deal for around $2.5mil with incentives worth around $1mil, is there anyone (except Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon) who will not take him on? It will be a killer when Castillo lets another 50 or more ball trickle through the infield like last season.

With Reyes back, and hopefully fully fit, it makes a lot of sense to sign a guy with Lopez's ability and 4.0 WAR. This is probably why we won't!

Oh boy

We signed Cora for 2MM. Wouldn’t it be freaking poetry if Lopez signs for that, plus just a little more?

We'd better give Alex Cora another couple of million and a vest, to make sure he doesn't get jealous!

Cora already has the vest...

80 starts and we get his services for the bargain price of 2 million in 2011.

All the more reason to sign Lopez

I don’t think we’ll ever find out the exact thought processes that led Omar/Jeff to make Cora the first player they focused on this off-season. I suspect it involves several bottles of alcohol and some drunk-dialing.

We need to tell Omar that we need a second MI

and that most teams have two. That way he won’t feel like an idiot for signing Cora and let his ego get in the way of signing Lopez.

I think it's funny

that you think Omar would ever feel stupid for signing Cora.

Does Cora really have a vest? How did that escape my notice/memory?

Honestly, what is the point of giving a vesting option to a replacement-level back-up infielder, who is already making about 260% more than what he should be making? I mean, I know Omar does stupid things sometimes, but…I don’t get it. At all. Whatsoever.

The good thing is it will require him to start about 1/2 the games this season.

It’s at least a pretty unlikely one.

I wonder how unlikely it actually is though

that either Castillo or Reyes, or both miss significant time

If Cora's option vests we're looking at 2009 all over again.

There’s really no way he’ll get 80+ starts unless the team is foundering, though I suppose he’ll be the starter if Castillo’s out for any length of time. In which case he’ll wear down again and give us that stellar bat in the 600 OPS+ range. Jessus—who’s the backup MI in the system if Castillo or Reyes is out for a while and Cora’s the starter at 2nd?

by SeanSchirmer on Feb 8, 2010 11:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is a serious concern considering Castillo is aging, has bad knees

and will hear the crowds booing from the first pitch of the season. Cora isn’t going to cut the mustard…although he does cut the cheese.

When Reyes went out last year he was starting about 2/3 of the games before he got hurt.

I think that would be a pretty reasonable expectation again given his age. To get 80 starts during the course of the year is going to require they both miss alot of time, we’d likely have to be missing at least one of them from the end of April on. There is an upside if it vests though…for the bargain price of 2 million we’d likely be rid of both Jerry and Omar

He also had injury problems when he came up

and all throughout his minor league career, all of which were with his legs I believe, which were apparently miraculously heeled when he started a training program under a Dr. who’s name I can’t remember right now. And several reports that came out, after his injuries, said that training program had been abandoned at the beginning of 09, no one knew why, and hasn’t been reimplemented.

It could simply work out that both Castillo and Reyes miss 40 games each.

Not really all that unlikely given Castillo’s age and Reyes’ injury.

Well as stupidly bad as it might be

Houston does seem to have some sort of plan, they seem to realize that fans will show up to watch Lee/Oswalt/Berkman no matter how bad the rest of the team is so they just hang onto those three and pretend to be surrounding them with quality.

As recently as 1995 attendance was below 18,000

and under 30k in 2003 and 2004, so there’s room for lousy attendance even in NY.

by SeanSchirmer on Feb 8, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The mid 1990's attendance dip was industry wide, and was likely the result of the strike.

the 2003 and 2004 numbers were probably more accurate, but that’s still nearly 2.5 million tickets sold at those rates.

Exactly

The terminology I was going to use. Can play SS and 2B for above average production, has come off the bench in the past, see no reason not to. Plus, since hes a “sunk cost” he’ll get to battle Castillo for ABs and provide better depth than Cora. Done and done.

by kendynamo on Feb 8, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wishful thinking

What makes anyone think this is even remotely on the Mets FO’s radar? They wouldn’t spend $1.5 million on Toreallba (not that I would want him) where they don’t have an established, expensive option at catcher. What makes anyone think they will spend $2.5 on Lopez when they already have $6 million (?) tied up in Castillo and $2 million already committed to a backup in Cora.

The Mets seem like they are done spending, and if they aren’t they will probably go after a pitcher. They are not going to sign a player when they have two players and $8 million committed to the same position.

GET LOPEZ!...

and move Cora to the coaching role he is better suited to fill so we can still have competition for the one remaining bench spot. This is what we get for signing Cora so quick for so much when there is a much better and younger replacement still available, now for the same price.

Lopez over Castillo

I have been hoping for some improvement over Castillo a 2b. We missed all of our other opportunities and now are down to Lopez, who I consider a big upgrade over Castillo. First we know that he will play a full season and not get hurt halfway through. Second he is better offensively and should be better overall in the filed than Castillo, and he is also 5 years younger. The Mets should try to move Castillo or just sign Lopez anyway. Maybe we can revisit the Lowell deal with Boston and send Castillo away by payng most of his salary. Make it a 3-way deal with Boston and Detroit. We send Castillo to Detroit and Lowell comes to us, with Boston receiving something or little in return. Then if we get Lowell we could dump horrible Tatis and have Lowell to platoon with Murphy at first and spell Wright at third. Lopez would be a much better fit than Castillo, and now he is going to cost only a small sum, around Cora money, lol. Is the Mets management that bad that they don’t want to take a one year chance on the guy at a bargain price.

by TomCarvel on Feb 9, 2010 5:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That trade doesn't make much sense for us.

Tatis is more versatile than Lowell, who’s only played 67 innings away from 3rd (at second base, in 2005). Lowell’s natural position is one of only 2 that’s not a concern/question mark for next season. Given our needs, I’d rather have Tatis, who can capably play 4 positions, than Lowell, who can only play one which is already occupied.
