Mike Pelfrey Is In The Best Shape Of His Life
ITBSOHL!!
Pelfrey doesn’t blame his weight for last season’s troubles — he says he got to 257 pounds at one point last summer and will arrive in Port St. Lucie around 230 — but also knows that better shape physically translates into a better mental approach.

And so it begins
They couldn’t even wait until anyone actually shows up at camp. What a scoop.
Next year I’ll expect one of these stories before Christmas.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
hey
At least he actually lost weight.

It's sad if Pelfrey really thinks he had a terrible year last season
I guess it’s cool if it motivates him or something, and it’s not like he can just kill the defense behind him, but I hope he doesn’t buy into that nonsense of him taking a huge step back
Well, Pelf certainly did not have a good year either, but yeah his defense torched him about one run on his ERA. A 4.39 FIP isn’t good either.

its not spectacular but its not awful either
and if he was at all aware of how the defense was costing the team, it could have had some impact on his pitch selection. I know i’d avoid anything that could go back up the middle if I had combinations like Castillo and Cora/Berroa behind me

Yeah but his tra and xFIP were worse
and more in line with his “career”, which is like all of 2 years, xFIP and tra.

Yeah, but ...
he was supposed to be our solid number 2 behind Johan and he certainly was not that. Unless he really turns things around, he destined probably to be a 4 or a 3 at best IMHO. He didn’t develop any of secondary or tertiary pitches and when he got in trouble, he blew up.
I’ll need to see a big improvement from him in both his execution of pitches and mental toughness on the mound to have any confidence in him.

I don't think anyone except for the Mets front office trying to hype him
honestly believed, at any point so far in his career, that Mike Pelfrey is a “number two” starting pitcher.

You didn't spend enough time at metsblog

I take it, Mike Pelfrey was supposed to be an ace, and because he "sucked" this year, we need to trade him ASAP?

I haven't been on it this year
So I don’t know if he’s been downgraded to total bust suck yet. But a lot of them in the 09 off-season expected him to be a high #2.

In the Metsblog world, so I've heard,
I’m sure there’s a considerable population that thinks we can trade Pelfrey and Castillo for Phillips, Cueto, and Volquez, so I guess it’d work out in any case, keep him because he’s an ace, or trading him because he’s a total wash…

give the guy a real middle infield and i'll bet he looks much better
maybe not a #2 but a strong #3 (even though those numbers are kind of meaningless). He had the lowest LD% and the highest GB% of his career, his K/9 was up last year, his BB/9 rate seems to be stabilizing around 3 somewhere, and a .321 BABIP wasn’t particularly kind to him. His HR/9 is <1, which, while slightly elevated, is still pretty reasonable. He’s a good pitcher who can’t use his best stuff properly because ground balls went from a blessing to a liability last year. I think Pelf has a higher ceiling than most people give him credit for anymore.

I don't think this qualifies him
I have been keeping an eye out for ITBSOHL, and some have com real close, bu t no one has come out and said or written.
So far O.P., GMJ, Murphy, and now Pelf, have thrown their hat in the race, but none has yet to drop those famous words yet. Give it time.

Agreed
It just doesn’t rise to that level. The dude lost 25 pounds, that’s great. But he’s not ITBSOHL because of it.
Good thing Bengie didn't sign here, then. We'd need another starting pitcher.

An AA Meme strikes again!
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: It's Kovy Time!
i cant wait for that sweet sweet CHMPTIONSHIP
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON... BUY THAT MANSION. WE DONT NEED A CONDO.
i wonder how such a tall dude gets in shape?
just a lot off running? treadmill? stairmaster? eliptical machine? i’d personally love to see pelfey brun a few calories on a gazelle, just for fun.

In fairness, most of the weight loss can be attributed to losing the monkey known as the Verducci Effect off his back.
For all of his troubles in 2009, at least he stayed healthy.
Mike
it’s not your fault for a 5 ERA. It’s the defence. You are fine otherwise, just hurt Luis Castillo and get Lopez signed

NO
if he hurts castillo will just get cora for 162 games, plus his option will vest.

Pelfrey
advocated keeping Cora around for his clubhouse presence. Maybe having Cora on the field helps Pelfrey because he knows he can’t let anyone hit the ball to Cora.

crap forgot about that
We’re stuck with Castillo, aren’t we?

Doesn't help
that his BB and HR rates went up significantly.

Pelf- is going to break out this year...
he’ll become the “2nd ace” of the rotation.

And the source of your optimism is .... ???
… the great strides he made last year? His mental toughness on the mound? The development of his devastating 12-6 curveball?
