Mets Claim OF Jason Pridie Off Waivers From Twins
Pridie had a rough first half in Triple-A Rochester but OPS-ed .811, .734, and .780 in the season's final three months. His defense is +60 in TotalZone over the past four seasons.
To make room, the Mets DFA'd Jack Egbert.

Well, people liked him in Rochester, so that's a thing.
He doesn’t really get on base, though.

Not according to Dave Cameron
“Mets claim Jason Pridie on waivers. The outfielder had a .306 wOBA last year… in Triple-A. I’m sorry, Mets fans. Your GM sucks”
I know he’s smart, but geez, he’s a duche sometimes.
I love Dave Cameron
Saying Omar sucks is like saying the Taliban are misunderstood. I mean, it’s a pretty big understatement. Why do we insist on picking up low-OBP outfielders with “upside”? What IS upside anyways?
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
Meh he's definitely brilliant
but he does seem to be overly picking at the mets lately. And he definitely has his douche moments.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

Is it possible
That he is picking on the Mets because there is a lot to pick on? I mean, I don’t care if this is a depth signing, it represents what is wrong with the organization’s thinking. In principle, it’s a bad move. See what I’m saying?
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
He's a decent defensive OF for a team that has little OF depth
What the fuck is wrong with that kind of move?
He's another low-OBP outfielder
That might be the only position we are fine at.
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
You act as if high OBP outfielders grow on trees
And if he is as good defensively as his minor league numbers suggest, wouldn’t that give him at least some positive value?
?
OBP isn’t the only thing that gives a player value, guys like Endy, and Guitterez are so valuable despite their offensive short comings are because of their defense. Pridle is a guy who played well above average defense in the minors. If he can maintain that he’ll be a valuable major leaguer regardless of his obp, although obviously how valuable will depend on how good defensively he is and how his offense shapes out but it’s not like all low obp outfielders are created equal.
And I don’t say this to be rude but I plenty of articles at fangraphs talk about and detail just that, them making uzr public and widely available is pretty much what sparked the value of defense wave, or w/e, among regular bloggers.

I don't see how it represents anything wrong
Pridle has been an awesome defender in the minors, if anything he’s the type of player that gets undervalued and a smart team would pick up, assuming his minor league numbers aren’t all a lie but with so few major league innings I don’t see how Cameron could have come to that conclusion.

He's been a big douche lately

I'm not sure
the Mets will ever get over the loss of Egbert…

his below average stuff will be greatly missed

Egbert is a better last name than Pridie, at any rate...
Egbert screams someone who’s been picked on his entire life, and has a ton of grission to compensate for it, you know?

I don't get this move
The only possible reason to pick him up is his glove. But if we wanted a bench OF who provides great D, why not bring back Endy, who also is a much better hitter?

Endy is hurt
He won’t play until June. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/marinersblog/2009364134_endy_chavez_could_miss_part_of.html
"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner
I know he's hurt, be he's still worth looking into.
Be a nice depth pickup if he comes back on time, and at a cheap price.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Feb 9, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah but why pick up a hurt defensive only outfielder
when you can pick up a healthy one? I mean I don’t have anything against possible bringing Endy back but when a guy who’s only value is in his outfield speed is out for half the season with a torn ACL I can see why teams would choose to pass.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

I suppose I'm just worried about bringing in another low-OBP player.
I know it’s not the only skill that matters, and maybe Pridie’s glove will outweigh his bad offense, but his lack of offense is a bit of a concern. That said, at least Omar is looking at defense now.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Feb 9, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions
I mean you would think with the number of smart teams that value defense highly
if it was that simple one of them would have already picked him up. It’s kind of like how last year we were all wondering why none of the smarter teams were picking up Sheets when his price had dropped so low, and then it came out he was going to be out for the season, when teams that correctly value a player like Endy aren’t even interested for a minor league deal you have to think there’s some big question marks about his return and his defensive abilities when he does come back.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I'm not sure you can compare the situations
Lack of interest in a top tier pitcher is significantly more enlightening than lack of interest in a 4th outfielder…
But I mean we're talking about lack of interest in a play asking for 8 million +
vs a player who’s looking for a minor league deal, with Sheets his price tag priced him out of several teams, even before the injury was made public, especially with the state of the economy during the 09 off-season, Endy clearly hasn’t priced himself out of any team so even the more progressive teams with the small budgets could pick him up with no risk.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
but its a difference between a player that would be valuable on any team
and a player that is valuable to teams who value defense independently. Most of the teams that value defense appropriately already have fourth outfielders that reflect that valuations process. Endy is valuable to a team with a certain need to fill, while Sheets would have gotten a contract from any team he wanted if healthy.
Yeah but even on teams with such fourth outfielders
Endy would be one of the elite players of that mold. I’m not sure even defensive heavy teams have 4th outfielders/5th outfielders in the minors or elsewhere who are as good as Endy when healthy. And it’s not like we’re talking about these teams having to clear a roster spot for him if he’s willing to accept a minor league deal.

Willy Taveras can be had for nothing now.
more CF depth…

Except Taveras sucks.
He’s better than GMJ, but pretty much everyone is.

Defensive
replacement and P/R for ML min…. it’ll be interesting to see how GMJ’s season will compare to Taveras’s assuming WT lands a ML deal w/someone.

Taveras has kind of been all over the map defensively
so it’s not a given he’ll be that strong defensively this year.

He's probably better to have as a fourth/fifth outfielder
than GMJ

we should make a list of major league outfielders
as in players still under major league contracts or under major league contracts in the last year, who aren’t better options than GMjr.

Jeremy Reed. Okay, that’s all I’ve got.
Are we taking their contracts into account?

I wasn't but I suppose it depends on how egregious their contracts are
The only one I can think of who’s that bad is Guillen
and holy crap I looked up Guillen just to be sure and he was worth -2 WAR last year. that’s funny. It would be funnier if we hadn’t been linked to him multiple times the last few off-seasons.

Soriano or Wells were the first two that came to mind.

I'd completely disagree about Jackson
and Giles is signed pretty cheaply and was incredibly valuable until he fell off a cliff last year. And Young is still under team control and was recently the #1 prospect in baseball so he has some upside left. Did you look at these guys fangraphs pages? Jackson was average-above average until he missed most of the season last year with some kind of sickness.

Guillen!
Yeah, salary (and like 70 points of slugging percentage) are the two things that really set Reed and GMJ apart from one another; given what the Mets are actually paying GMJ this year, swapping one for the other might wind up being an admittedly crappy wash. But Guillen is another universe. I honestly had no idea, but his Fangraphs page is Event Horizon-scary, especially the UZR numbers. I bet Darren Dreifort calls Guillen every now and then just to congratulate him on that contract.
good bench pickup
I think we have done a great job filling our bench this off season but failed to fill the starting line up
