Mets close to minor league deal with Mike Jacobs
First Catalanotto, now Jacobs.
Now, perhaps I'm crazy, but since it's apparent the Mets have little faith in Murphy.... why don't they just... FREAKING SIGN RUSSELL BRANYAN!

What the hell?
Well, it’s a good thing that we’ve been saving room at our DH position. Oops, wait…
Seriously, though, it’s a Minor League deal, and it can’t hurt. Maybe Jacobs will figure something out, and improve on his defense and OBP or something…

It can hurt
for 1. it clogs up the 1b/dh position at AAA, for 2. they might call him up and then we’ll have gmjr and mike jacobs on our team and that’s just not right.

it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I'd posit that we already have a very clogged 1b situation in the Minors.
We have lefties, righties, platoons, everyday players, prospects, wash-outs, reclamation projects…Oy vey…

I think he's in AA
he’s trying to be a catcher

What
note to Dave Cameron, this is why you shouldn’t jump at the bit to mock the mets for reasonable moves, if he had just waited an hour they would have given him a perfect chance for an in depth mocking.

Couldn't they do this a few days ago
so that they could have him practice defense with Keith Hernandez too?
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.
THe Mets can't sign Russell Branyan
because he
1. Has not made a good catch 3 years ago
2. Is not a former Expo or Met

I am missing something I guess
this move seems reasonable to me
just watch everyone who hates this deal jump on board
when the Mets trade Castillo or buy him out, and move Murph to 2nd, and then put Jacobs at first with Davis backing him up.
hey….it could happen….it’s the Metz
you know what I'm sayin' ?
I'm getting the feeling he might be starting in AA, which wouldn't upset me too much.
Let him start the season there as long as he gets promoted if he earns it. Mid-May we can always cut the Pascucci’s and Hessmans of the world if we need to.

Even if it's just to compete for the job in spring training, I like it.
Minor league deals are usually good.

Lefty power bat off the bench?
perhaps? otherwise, i don’t see how the organization has room for him. At this point, it looks like Ike starts out at Binghamton which isn’t all that bad, either. i’d rather take my chances with Murph as the starter, though. those K and BB numbers are abysmal and we know his D is below average.
forgot to add this...
Omar once again trying to one up Dayton Moore in the contest. i think Moore still comes out on top, though, for actually trading a live body in Nunez for Jacobs.
good try, though. good try.

The contest really shouldn't apply here.
He’s been roughly replacement level throughout his career and got a minor league deal. He’s now under the correct contract for a replacement level player.

They'll be good PR.
If nothing else they should improve the Bisons W/L record, which will in turn convince the MSM that we have an amazing farm system.

I grew up a season ticket holder...and they were always good.
I was kinda bummed when they finished third to the Rockies and Marlins for expansion, but I think that would have been a pretty bad place for a MLB franchise to prosper. In the end I guess it worked out.

I'd imagine they'd have the same kind of problems that Minnesota is expecting to have, with the snow and cold weather in April.

Except they'd be in a far smaller market that's been hit much harder by the economy.
Buffalo would likely be the least financially sound market in all of baseball. They’d have a better fanbase than the Marlins, but far less revenue streams to tap into.

Second best signing this off season after Bay
I betcha when all is said and done, Jacobs is starting at 1B and Murphy’s ass is picking up pine.

You're a very brave man.
Omar and Jerry clearly don’t value OBP, and they clearly value homeruns highly. Jacobs seems like just the type of guy that might be appealing to them.

Not true
they value obp at the top of the line up, it’s why we’re paying Luis Castillo the big bucks.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I wish I believed that's why Castillo was getting 6 million.
Somehow I have a feeling it was based on his solid defense.

second best?
How, exactly?
Is it because of Jacob’s defense skills (so bad he dh’s)
Is it because of his OBP skills (Makes Frenchy look good)
or is it because he can hit homers and do nothing else?

both Jacobs and Francoeur are (should be only)
platoon players… and both are about equal from their respective strong sides for their careers… tho being strong against LHed pitching means JF is somewhat less valuable a hitter since RHers outnumber LHers about 2:1.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Feb 10, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions
except Jacbos is less valuable than Francoeur
because he cannot do anything good except have a high ISO
I’d rather have Francoeur off the bench
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
by firejerrynow on Feb 10, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions
why...
Jacobs is .325/.505 for an .830 OPS in over 1600 PAs vs. RHers.
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Feb 10, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions
because Jacobs cannot field
and a .325 OBP is really poor.

Francoeur's
career split is .827 vs. LHers and .710 vs. RHers… and the .827 consists of 340/487… and I’m not overly confident in Francoeur’s OF defense going forward (arm aside)…

His range rating rebounded some in altanta before the trade
and he’s slimmed down some from his 08 weight, not all the way back to where he was at when he first came up but some, there’s reason to think he can regain his range.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
I'm still not fooling myself into
thinking Francoeur is going to hit RHers…
by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Feb 10, 2010 11:05 AM EST up reply actions
Well there's only so much we can ask right
luckily right handers will only make up like 72-75% of the pitchers he sees… so y’know there’s that.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
right...
we can always hope for a sensible platoon in RF…. wait, sensible???? nevermind.

"Never throw a slider to The Glider."

I remember when Jacobs was tearing the league to shreds in 2005
and I was upset that they traded him for Delgado. Glad that worked out.
This signing means essentially nothing, it’s just an okay depth move. I doubt Jacobs would beat a Chris Carter for a roster spot at this point.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.
Did you think we'd be giving GMjr a roster spot 2.5 months ago?
I’m just sayin it’s a crazy world we live in.
"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'
it's Omar's world, we're just livin in it.
Actually, to be honest
I did. I thought we would have traded Castillo for him in a bad contract swap, and then went to sign Hudson. Did I think that we’d actually trade a (small) asset for GMJ? No, obviously not.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.
I thought he had become a DH b/c he D was so bad
by Rickfansince76 on Feb 10, 2010 12:29 AM EST reply actions
Thats why the Mets signed him
Omar thought the DH was an NL rule too

Yeah, that's probably spot on.
Then he called up Omar and told him to find an even worse baseball player to put at first base. Makes sense.

Aside from Ike Davis, that will give Mets fans anything to look forward to.

Perhaps.
But it still wouldn’t make sense to downgrade from Murphy to Jacobs this season just because Davis is in the wings.

Unless he totally * up in Spring Training. The Mets have gone all in with Murphy.

I'll be honest, this is a name I never in a million years thought we'd be connected to again
but for a minor league deal, why not. Who knows, maybe he finds his swing again. He may be slight overkill, as we have a billion potential 1bs, but I’m sure we’ll forget he exists soon enough anyway. I’d much rather have Branyan and let Murph play around and learn a few positions, but nothing to get up in arms about here.
