Open Thread: Mets vs Braves, 3/10/2010

The Mets take on the Braves today in Lake Buena Vista, where they apparently don't allow video cameras. You can listen to the game or follow using gameday.

Jon Niese starts for the Mets, and will be followed by Fernando Nieve, Nelson Figueroa, Bobby Parnell, Eddie Kunz, and Eric Niesen.

With 13 long balls so far this spring, the Mets are tied with the Orioles for the most in the "majors". It doesn't mean much, but after 2009's home run impotence it's nice to see a few, ahem, balls leaving the yard.

I know Wright hit zero last spring

it was an early alarm bell. I think he hit maybe hit 1 in a scrimmage vs. Michigan and that was it.

What happened to Brad Holt?

I thought he was going to get some innings last week?

by Mackey Sasser on Mar 10, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions

He wasn't invited to MLB camp

So I imagine it was partly just in case they needed someone to fill some innings on a road trip, and since they didn’t he’s back in minor league camp stretching out.

funny how much can change in a year

last spring training, everyone thought we busted on Ike Davis, but at least we had Holt and Havens to make up for it. Now, Ike is clearly the top prospect of the three of them, and there are some warning signs about how good Holt and/or Havens are actually going to be.

Did you not read the AAA?

Mark and Sam had Reese at 4 and Davis at 6. I agree with you though, I think Davis is our third best prospect.

by Evan_S on Mar 11, 2010 2:09 AM EST up reply actions

haven't gotten to the prospect section yet

personally, I love Havens, but I don’t see how he could possibly be ranked above Davis right now. He’s got injury concerns, and when healthy has never hit as well as Davis hit last year. Add in the fact that Davis has a legit shot of helping out the big league club this year and Havens wasn’t even invited to ML camp, and I don’t think it’s all that close, unless you’re really valuing long-term potential and really debiting Ike for being a first baseman. I could easily see Havens having a better pro career than Davis, but I also think it’s much more likely that he never makes an impact at the ML level. Davis is proving that, at the very least, he’s going to be in the majors soon and will probably be able to hit at least a little.

I'd like to see that.

Murphy needs to get some actual experience at second first, though. A few AFL games and a wish and a dream really aren’t enough. Second base isn’t really the kind of position you can randomly move people do and expect them to do good- I bet he’d be better than Luis Castillo, though.

My completely speculative guess is

that during spring training (1) they might tinker with/test the product, and/or (2) they don’t have the same number of/caliber of people doing the data entry so the product necessarily won’t be as high-quality as what one would get in the regular season. If so, they might be worried about diluting the Gameday brand/reputation – not enough to make it unavailable entirely, but enough not to make the link easily available.

by dontstopbelieving on Mar 10, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I guess thats possible

Just seems a little strange to go such an in between route, especially knowing how many people rely on gameday especially for afternoon games, which all of these obviously are.

But they don’t have to start his clock so early. It might make sense, but I doubt he gets called up just for the sake of a September callup if they don’t really need him.

Maybe, but if so it would be almost excusively for his glove

I doubt he’s a .330 wOBA MLBer at age 21. I’m more in the camp that Tejada’s a future second division starter or a super useful first division bench player who can play all over the infield and expect 50-100 starts in a given year.

but I think he would just be keeping it warm for Reese havens anyway.

by wobatus on Mar 10, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly

Who knows, if Havens can stay healthy, he could be in Triple-A by midseason this year anyway. He really was a beast last year, but between the FSL and hitting a few too many popups, it was obscured. He’ll be facing many of the same pitchers next year, but this time, he’ll have a much shorter RF to shoot for and the nasty Florida weather patterns and big parks won’t be there to contain him so much. He should at the very least be in big league camp next spring, perhaps even with a chance to win the job.

-HST

by Mark Himmelstein on Mar 10, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

but depending on what he does this year, getting rid of him will be much less daunting with just one year and $6 mil left on his contract. If he’s awful, cutting him is a more realistic option, and if he’s good, trading him might actually be possible. The toughest scenario is if he’s like 1.0 WAR over the full season, kinda in between, cause then you can make a case for keeping him and no one’s gonna wanna trade for him.

"All energy flows according to the whims of the great magnet

What a fool I was to defy him"

-HST

by Mark Himmelstein on Mar 10, 2010 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I guess its much easier for the mets to cut him with one year left. I guess the best argument would be that if they don’t win a lot, there’s a chance there is a new regime in place that would’ve cut Castillo two offseasons ago.

Anyways, If Omar’s still around and does manage to offload Castillo, wouldn’t he just then sign Hudson, who will be a FA again, regardless of how smart/dumb that signing would be just because he knows that the media has wanted him for two years?

I guess I’m saying I dont think that Tejada or Havens will be the Mets starting 2B next April.

by mets81 on Mar 10, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

Possible

But I do think Havens really isn’t that much less likely to be ready in 2011 than Tejada, if he can stay healthy of course. If its Omar you’re probably right, it’ll be a year of O-Dog with a ridiculous vesting option or something.

Until Beltran comes back, it should be this, right?:

GMJr. Blanco (personally, I’d rather see Coste make the team)
Tatis

It has to be that, doesn’t it? And if they go with 11 pitchers, maybe Evans, Pridie or Adams.

What’s the point in carrying Jacobs? Another lefthanded hitting 1b when they already have Tatis to give Murphy days off at 1st. Seems very redundant. Carter could give Francouer the occasional day off.

by Mackey Sasser on Mar 10, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Here's what I dont understand

This is the team that plays guys because of how much money they make — whether because they refuse to eat money or because they want to save face. And in Carter you have basically your only return for giving up two Top 40 draft picks. So all things being equal, you’d think they’d rather have Carter make the club, to show they got something for Wagner. Instead, they seem to be leaning to the guy they signed to a minor league deal.

by Bieser's Balk on Mar 10, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Yup, it makes no sense

Its guided (I think) out of some beleif that they can still use Carter in AAA, but that Jacobs is long gone if they don’t let him stick with the big club. I’d say Carter has to continue the pace he’s set and Jacobs needs to stink for it to work out the way that would be an easy decision for most clubs.

by mets81 on Mar 10, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is that they're so loaded with 1B/COF types For Triple-A

Depth shouldn’t be a concern, if anything its becoming a problem. Assuming Pridie doesn’t make the majors, that puts him in Triple-A CF. F-Mart probably then gets RF, Ike gets first base, Bowman gets third base. Then you have to fit Chris Carter and Mike Hessman into LF, who are both very useful depth pieces if they don’t make the major league roster, not to mention Lucas Duda, who spent pretty much all year in Double-A and not only had a decent year but improved in the second half. Duda may have to repeat Double-A and play LF, though he doesn’t need to. He’ll have Nieuwenhuis in CF and most likely Carlos Guzman in RF, Zach Lutz at third base, and perhaps Stefan Welch at first. Those last three guys may not be very well known, but they’re the three biggest offensive sleepers in the organization above A-ball. They all had very good, under-the-radar years last year.

I call this a problem because many of these guys could be superior options to both Daniel Murphy and Mike Jacobs in the not-too-distant future, and a few are almost certainly already better than Jacobs.
