Ugh.
It says it’ll take 2-8 weeks for his levels to stabilize and that he’’ll be cleared to resume baseball activities after that. So, 2-8 weeks plus some time in rehab to get back into shape, I would think…
So...
…is that like 6 to 12 weeks then? Gotta terrible feeling we’re not seeing him for awhile…

When you start treating the thyroid
it takes 4-6 weeks until you can get accurate lab values again. If they are still off you adjust meds up or down (assuming he’s going on meds) and take labs in 4-6 weeks. If a procedure is necessary, then all bets are off because you have to start a totally different course of meds. Of course, due to the proximity of the thyroid to some sensitive areas, “they” will avoid anything invasive unless totally necessary.
Of course, Endys Game (downstream on this thread) makes the very good point that dietary/supplement solutions are being investigated first.

he needs to haul his goldbrickin ass back out there and earn that hefty paycheck the mets generously bestowed on him

You're damn right Reyes is lazy.
Only lazy players try to come back from hamstring injuries when their team is out of playoff contention.
Coming this April, fun times with Jeff and Gary!
First off, he's making $9 million, not 12
and I’m sure he’d love nothing more than to be on the field playing, people usually don’t like being sick.
yeah i know. just kidding everyone!

My God...
“Minaya says that when Reyes returns to camp, he will need to be built up again, "as far as running and those types of things," coming off his injury. He said that this is why he went out and re-signed Alex Cora this offseason.”
Fire him immediately.

Opening Day Lineup
Angel Pagan, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
Jeff Francoeur, LF
Jason Bay, RF
Fernando Tatis, 3B, as I’m sure DW will get beaned now.
Ike Davis, 1B
Alex Cora, SS
Rod Barajas, C
Remember two months ago
When our opening day lineup looked like this:
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Bay
Murphy
Francoeur
Santos
Good times.
It may not take as long as two weeks for his thyroid to return to normal
my GF is a nurse at Beth Israel and said that since Reyes isn’t taking medication to lower his levels then he has the best possible diagnosis. Changing his diet and rest should bring him back to normal. She also said because of no meds his thyroid level is not high enough to assume there was PED use. So take that for what its worth she’s just a nurse but she works in the oncology dept and I trust her more than the mets doctors.

No offense to your girlfriend but
The Mets have outside people handling this as well from Colombia Pres. and I do trust them more let us hope that it is closer to 2 weeks than 8.
You trust the Mets, and anyone remotely associated with them?

yeah I do trust some people who are remotely associated with them. I am remotely associated with them as are you. I trust myself.
seriously folks, you are all sounding a bit unhinged here. I understand the angst and frustration and believe me, I am as upset as anyone about the prospect that Reyes won’t be ready for opening day. But all indications are that this is a mild treatable case of hyperthyroidism that rest and diet changes will cure. no operation required. And there isn’t one doctor, associated with the Mets or not, who has suggested otherwise. So let us get a grip please. I think that there will be much worse things to worry about like say all of Oliver Perez’s starts this year.

Speaking for her none taken
She just gave her professional opinion because I asked her. I wanted to share that with my fellow AA members
that is fine
I was kidding around mostly but my one real point was that it is not like Omar and Jerry are the ones handling this. They have given this to what seem like competant medical people. There are experts not affliated with the Mets who have concurred with the Mets handling of this so far. Their medical handling that is not their PR handling which has been awful. So I don’t think we should all freak out yet
Well the point of my post and the info in it was to calm the fears
I think you took the comment about not trusting the Mets as a freak out but it wasn’t. No harm no foul but a lot of issues regarding the Mets leave fans shaking their head and we’ll continue to see jokes until there is consistent excellence and not the mess.
Hopefully he'll test normal next week
Get ‘built up’, and join the team in early April. The news could’ve been a hell of a lot worse.
And here we....go.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
But this is why he made sure to sign Alex Cora!!!

you still are all jumping the gun
the point is that his condition is still uncertain as these things always are. But as Major said the key is that he is not taking any medication wich means it is the most mild case it could be. I also suspect that the 8 week outer range includes rehab time. His levels could stabilize in a week or it could take longer. Part of it will depend on how closely he follows the orders to take it easy and change his diet.
It is true though that once again from a pr/press point of view, the Mets handled this as badly as anybody could have.
yeah but in the meantime we have the 2 Million Dollar Frown Machine
to take his place. Plus every game Cora plays is one game closer to his option vesting. If reyes misses a couple weeks, theres a very good chance we get alex cora again in 2011

My biggest fear is actually that we start the season off poorly
because Beltran and Reyes are both out, the FO goes into panic mode because we’re losing too much, and teams start lining up at the door to trade us their magic beans. I feel like one or two bad weeks to start the season and things could turn ugly in a hurry.
by KeithsMoustache on Mar 11, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions
The silver lining to you "slow start" scenario
is that a slow start might also mean a quick exit for the dreaded JerrOmar beastie…
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
We can dream
but I doubt it. Injuries give you a free pass to suck (if you’re management) in this org. Even if you subtract all the injuries, they underperformed relative to payroll last year. How much worse a job can you do and still keep your job?
However, if you’re a player and get beaned in the head, that’s no excuse.
The 2 to 8 is how long he may have to remain inactive.
So if it’s 8 weeks, he’ll probably be out for like 9 weeks.
Omar did not actually say that
he simply said Reyes would be out 2-8 weeks which could include rehab time. He did not specify.
This is what MetsBlog has, as well as the SNY crawl
In a conference call with reporters today, Omar Minaya said Jose Reyes will need 2-8 weeks until his thyroid levels stabilize and he can resume baseball activities.
That's the time he's going to be out before rehab time.
As either Keith or Ron pointed out during the game before it got rained on, he can’t engage in aerobic activities and things like that, meaning that it’ll take a little extra time for him to rehab. If it was some other kind of bodily injury, he’d be able to work out those parts that were not related to the injury. With this, he’s completely shut down for the time being.

That's impressive
Their arms would get so weak after about 5 innings and they start throwing lobs at about 30 MPH. I threw a no-no with Nolan Ryan, but could not get one with Doc. Best baseball game ever.

You had to take it easy with the fastballs
I always thought that was what would make them get tired. Medium-speed pitches moving towards the corner to induce weak grounders were the key.

Well, I guess he does.
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Good point
from Ken Davidoff
Greenberg said that Reyes exercised earlier this week, after getting the green light to do so. But the final tests showed elevated thyroid hormone blood levels, which could have gone up as a result of the exercise. That needs to be scrutinized further.

Reyes is so selfish for missing opening day
also, if Reyes tries to come back early, he’s so selfish for trying to be there on opening day. What a selfish asshole.

Thank God for that vesting option
We can just cut ties with Reyes and have a cheap world class player/manager after this season.

This
makes me legitimately sad. No Reyes in the opening day lineup really curbs my enthusiasm. It’s always something with this team.
I miss watching him play
I don’t care what the other teams think … I enjoy his goofiness and enthusiasm and talent. (and pouting and immaturity and not running to first sometimes)
My thyroid just jumped out of my neck ...
…and into this bag of Double Stufs I’m eating.
I’m …… so ……. tired ….. (of Mets injuries)
I could cry.
I’m not upset so much about the fact the met will continue to suck as I am that Jose just wants to play so badly and he can’t. As long as I can vivdly remember, I’ve looked to the left side of the Mets infield and seen David Wright and Jose Reyes and I would just be happy. It kills me that I haven’t been able to see that in so long. I know it’s not saying much as a baseball/Mets fan to say your two favorite players are David Wright and Jose Reyes, but I can’t help it. I love them and Jose needs to get better. If only I could talk to him on the phone…
by wrightttxgirlllx3 on Mar 11, 2010 7:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I worry that
Jose is going to become depressed and despondent with this latest ailment, and it will effect his play when he comes back. He’ll try to make up for lost time and do too much. I hope that doesn’t happen, but he has to be so damned disappointed and pissed right now. On the other hand, maybe if they can hang in there for a couple weeks, Reyes comes back and gives them a jolt, then Beltran comes back and it’s like the Knights just picked up Roy Hobbs. Ahhh, who am I kidding? Neither will play till August.

Alright, a legitimate question (for the people who saw the conference or have more info than I do):
Why is Reyes not being given any kind of medication, to ensure that his thyroid hormone stays at normal levels? Have doctors identified that he does not actually have Graves Disease (let alone, the other, rarer causes of hyperthyroidism)? If does indeed have any of those medical causes for having too much thyroid hormone in the body, would it not return to high levels if he resumes normal activities after normalizing it through rest?

Don't we have the impression that
the iodine levels or something in seafood possibly had a lot (a little?) to do with it? It sounds to me like they’re looking at it as possibly a temporary disruption, rather than a condition.
And he’s been getting these tests yearly, I assume, with no evidence before of a problem.
from Dave Lennon, Via rotoworld
The Mets say the timeline regarding Jose Reyes (thyroid) is already in progress.
That means Reyes could be sidelined from baseball activities anywhere from one to seven weeks, making the Mets the worst cable guy ever. They certainly aren’t masters of PR. The shortstop’s hyperthyroid condition is not considered serious and no medication is being prescribed to treat it, he’s simply being told to rest until his thyroid levels return to normal. There’s just no way to know when that will be.
"I only wanted a few things out of life -- a wife, children, to play baseball and to hunt deer." - Turk Wendell
I should contact them and ask if I can take over PR
I have no experience at all, but I couldn’t do worse.
what a freakin joke
just hours after the article in the post were Reyes agent said the Mets made a bigger deal out of the throid condition then it is and that he’s fine. This medical group and PR department are a joke. This could’nt happen when Lopez was avaliable. There goes are clean-up hitter, GOD I hate being a met fan. Just when you get excited about the season reality steps in.

Only slightly better defensively than Cora. The ability to play a position doesn’t necessarily make it a good thing.

how lately, basically, every time there’s reason to be excited even a little bit, for whatever reason, something else happens to temper that enthusiasm.

looking at the rest of the SS in camp we do not have a good choice.
Tejada needs to get another year of seasoning
L Hernandez has made 3 errors
Adams 1 error in 9 chances
and Ahernandez looked pretty weak at SS last season, much better at 2B
if Cora goes down, even for a couple of days we have no one and there are no free agents left for SS
