It sounds like the only way he'd fall to us is signability issues
Also he throws too many pitches for us to take him.

Most reports I've read think he'll be a tough sign because of his commitment to Rice.
He, Whitson, and Harper are certainly all candidates to drop to 7.

Do people really expect Harper to drop that far?
Oh yeah, Boras is repping him, isn’ he?

More importantly do people think we'll go over slot?
I know we did for Pelfrey, but is it likely we’ll take someone with sign ability concerns with a pick that high?

For the right player, we might
Maybe the Wilpons believe making a big splash in the draft by going over slot could appease the fans some.

I think it's a possibility this year.
You mentioned Pelfrey as an example, and I think the Mets should still have some money saved from this offseason. I’d suspect if a guy they really liked dropped in their laps, they’d go ahead and take him )espescially since they’d have the 8th pick next year if they fail to sign him). I wouldn’t think they’d reach for a guy they didn’t love however.

My wonder is that apparently the Wilpons reasons for not wanting to go over slot
is wanting an all-star game, if that’s true that could make them less likely to go over slot now than they were when Pelfrey was available.

Selig doesn't seem to mind teams going overslot here and there when they have a prospect they really like.
His issues seem to be with teams that constantly break slot and increase the costs for the entire league.

I think if Harper or Tallion are available
and the Mets don’t go over slot, the media will kill them, especially for Harper since he is well known after the whole SI thing.
If Harper is still availible by the time we pick, and we don't go after him...
Even if Boras is representing him, he’s being touted as a player that you work with Boras to get.

Looking around...
Taillon also looked decent- a real good fastball, a good curveball, a good slider, a change that he doesn’t use too often, but can control, and his main problem is just working on his control (which is fine, being that he’s a high school kid- I feel old saying that). Murphy seems like a decent pick- lefty with a good fastball, curve, and is working on a change, with decent control. Mind you, I don’t exactly know how scouts would list the listed guys.

Chris Sale looks like a real interesting guy to me
I think he’d definitely be there at 7

agreed on taillon
he’s been my top choice since last june. i’ve been reading up on him since the last draft, the problem is it seems like a lot of people have and he’s gone from a top 10 type guy to a nearly consensus top 3.
i’ve accepted that we probably won’t get him but i like the power arm route so i’m willing to settle for aj cole or karsten whitson instead.
andy seiler does a really good job covering the draft at his blog. his featured story this morning ranks organization’s by scouting deptartments and their ability to “effectively use their resources”. guess who brings up the rear?
